IMPROVEMENT IN CHOCKS FOR. BARRELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 2 l 3,203, dated March 11, 1879; application tiled November 27, 1878.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. JEWELL, of
Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Checks for Barrels, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates 'to an improvement in floor-checks for barrels; and consists in the construction of a chock having its front face 0i' an inclination similar to the curvature of the side of a barrel, and having upon the rear portion of its under surface a stud or studs for preventing the sliding of the chock when pressure is brought against its face. A portion of the heel of the chock, in rear of the studs, is removed, so that an adz or other device maybe inserted under it, and serve to pry up the rear of the chock when there is a pressure against its face.

The lower front end of the chock passes under the bulge of the barrel and serves as a lever, when the rear ofthe chock is being elevated, to resist the pressure of the barrels against it, to facilitate which a handle or gripe is formed by removing the interior section of the chock and rounding the edges, as more fully described hereinafter.

' For the purpose of lightening the device and to afford a handle or gripe, I prefer to cast it with its central portions removed; but it is plain that it could be cast in one solid piece, if desired, without departing from the essence of the invention.
In rear ofthe pins or studs b the heel ot' the chock is cast with the groove c, whereby a shoulder is formed, against which an adz or other device can be pressed when it is desired to elevate the heel of the chock.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A licor-chock for barrels, having the curved face a, the pins or studs b, and the groove c, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in chocks for barrels, as above de scribed, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of November, 1878.
