UNITE STATES PATENT FFIGE.
HENRY GERRISH, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN SPRING ATTACHMENTS FOR ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,845, dated March 4, 1879 application filed July 26, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY GERRIsH, of the city of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useiul Improvement in Spring Attachments for Rocking-Chairs, Cradles, &c., of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a strong simple spring attachment for a chair or cradle which is designed to rock on an under frame instead of the floor.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is an elevation of my device; Fig. 2, part elevation, showing the method of detaching the spring; Fig. 3, a section on line m w of Fig. 1, the spring being removed.
A is a spring, of suitable steel or other elastic wire. B is a hook for attachment to the rocker-frame. O is a cast-metal plate for attachment to the base-frame of the chair. The spring is made straight at one end, as at a, to fit into a perforation, F, in the plate 0, and when so placed the spring is prevented from turning or yielding too far by means of a lip, D, on the plate, against which the spring abuts. The plate is also provided with a square socket, E, which is inserted into a hole or eavity in the base-frame, its angular shape assisting to prevent the plate 0 from turning.
The operation of my device is as follows I secure two of the cast-iron plates to the baseframe by means of screws, letting in the square part E. I place the straight end a of the springs into the perforation F, and to the other end of the spring I affix the hook, and then secure the eye of the hook to a rocker. When the chair or cradle is rocked the effect of the springs is to assist in the operation of rocking by bringing the chair to its place on the frame.
What I claim is- The spring attachment for rocking-chairs herein described, consisting of the plate 0, provided with the perforation F and lip D, in combination with the spring A, having the straight end a, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY GERRISH.
