The present invention appertains to awnings of the type used for windows of a house, apartment, or other buildings, and an important object of the invention is to provide an awning so constructed that it will serve as a sunshade for windows or may be used as a ventilator.

A further important object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of this nature which is exceedingly simple in its construction, 1 easy to mount, thoroughly eflicient and reliable in use, and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.

With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds,

the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 1, as Figure 5 is a similar view but in a reversed position showing the device used as an awning,

Figure 6 is a similar view showing the device inverted as compared to Figure 4,

Figure 7 is a fragmentary elevation of the outside of a window frame showing the means for attaching the device thereto,

Figure 8 is a perspective View of a bracket, and Figure 9 is a perspective view showing one end of one of the frame members.

Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that a frame is constructed of a substantially U-shaped member A comprising a pair of overlapping cross members 5 connected together by suitable bolts or other means 6 so as to be adjustable in length. These members 5 have adjacent their corners openings 1 in which hooks 8 may be engaged. Numerals 9 denote the legs of this frame member A. A similarly constructed Cil frame member B comprises cross members 5 the ends of which are in overlapping relationship and connected together by bolts 6 and the ends of the legs 9 of which are bolted to the terminals of the legs 9 as indicated at II. It will be noted that the legs 9 have inwardly directed apertured lips l2 to be received in brackets M which are of U-shaped formation, the cross portions of which are fixed to the window frame and the upper plates of which are provided with openings if so that pins H5 or the like may be passed through the openings as shown to advantage, for example, in Figure 5 and through the apertures of the lips or ears I2 for holding the frame in place. The frame also includes side members ll bolted or otherwise fixed as at ill to the upper ends of the legs 9 and bolted as at 20 to the corner ends of the legs 9 and curved washers 2i are associated with the bolts 20 so that they may be easily removed to allow the collapsing or folding of the frame when not in use. The lower portions of the members ll are offset as shown at ll" in Figure 1 to lie in the plane of the respective legs 9 and the ends of the members ll are cut in V-shape as at H" in Figure 2 inorder that the edges of the end portions will lie in the plane of the edges of the adjacent frame members. A canvas covering 22, or other suitable material, is provided on the frame so as to provide a main section m and side sections 1. The covering is provided with suitable hems h for receiving the frame members A and B.

By proper location of the hooks 8 and the brackets l4 it will be seen that this device may be mounted as a ventilator on the inside of the window as shown in Figure 4, as an awning and ventilator as shown in Figure 5 on the outside of the window, on the inside of the window in the position shown in Figure 6 to function as a ventilator. The brackets M are used only when the device is used as an awning as shown in Figure 5.

It is thought that the construction, operation, utility, and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.

The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.

It will be apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, said frame comprising a pair of U-shaped members the terminals of which are secured together with the members in right angularly disposed plane, cross members connecting the corners of the frame members together, the frame being provided with a covering.

2. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, said frame comprising a pair of U-shaped members the terminals of which are secured together with the frames in right angularly disposed plane, cross members connecting the corners of the frame members together, a covering over the frame, the bases of the re spective U-shaped members being sectional and in overlapping relationship and means adjustably connecting them whereby the width of the framemay be adjusted.

3. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, said frame comprising a pair of U-shaped members the terminals of which are secured together with the frames in right angularly disposed plane, cross members connecting the corners of the frame members together, a covering over the frame, the bases of the respective U-shaped members being sectional and in overlapping relationship and means adjustably connecting them whereby the width of the frame may be adjusted, the terminals of one of the frame members having inwardly directed apertured ears.

4. A device of the class described including, in combination, a frame, said frame comprising a pair of U-shaped members the terminals of which are secured together with the frames in right angularly disposed plane, cross members connecting the corners of the frame members together, a covering over the frame, the bases of the respective U-shaped members being sectional and in overlapping relationship and means adjustably connecting them whereby the width of the frame may be adjusted, the terminals of one of the frame members having inwardly directed apertured ears, crossed'portions of said members having openings, said frame being supported by U-shaped brackets for receiving the ears, and hooks adapted to be engaged in said openings.
