7 Claims.
This invention relates to garments and more particularly tc garments and gowns for surgical or clinical purposes where different anatomical portions of a persons body may be exposed for `observation or operation purposes and at the same time enable the garment to preserve the neat appearance and design of ordinary wearing apparel. A gown of this type may also be employed as a maternity garment Where it is de- A4sired toy adjust the size of the garment from time to time and also expose the breast portions of the body in a convenient, comfortable and accessible manner without unduly exposing the person.
An important object of the present invention is to provide a surgical or maternity garment of novel desi-gn and arrangement which shall permit ready access to all principal parts of the body, or any one particular portion ofthe body while concealing the other parts from View.
Another object of the invention is to providev a garment of the character designated having front and rear portions which may be opened at various places to expose the front or rear portions of the body `without removing the garment from the person.
Another object of the invention is to provide a garment of the character vdesignated which shall be adjustable and form fitting in style so as to maintain the same in a neat and pleasing appearance as an ordinary house garment.
A further object of the invention is to providey a garment of the character designated having a novel form of cape which shall cooperate with the waist and skirt portions of the gown to fa- "`cilitate the use of the garment for a greater variety of uses and add to the appearance of the same.
These and other objects of the invention Will be more manifest from the following specification and drawings and more particularly set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of the garment,
Figure 2 is a rear view of the garment shown in Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a front pattern view,
Figure 4 is a similar View with the front portion opened and;
Figure 5 is a pattern view of the cape.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, there is shown a garment constituted and arranged in accordance with the present invention and comprises a blouse or waist portion I0 and a skirt II. The skirt is of the wrap type overlapping at the back. The waist I0 and skirt Il are united at the waist line by a waist band or belt I2 stitched thereto and provided with tapes I3 and I4 which overlap and tie inthe front as in-dicated by the numeral I5. f I
As shown in Figure 3, one side of the band I2 is provided with an opening It for receiving the opposite tape I3 and thus enable the skirt band portions I2 to overlap and thus be adjustable to any sized person and also hold the garment in a neat and form-fitting appearanceat the waist. f
The blouse l!) is of the backless type and is formed by providing taperingy sides` I I and I8 upwardly from the band I2 to a relatively narrow neck band portion I9l secured by tapes 20` and 2| in the usual manner. The blouse and skirt are cut away to? provide a large front central opening indicated by the numeral 22 as shown in Figure 4. This opening is closed or covered by a pleated flap 23which runs Afrom the bottom of the skirt to a position above the breast portion of the blouse as shownin Figure 3.v The iiap f tively, as shown in Figure 4. This flap fis also secured to thevwaist band I2 ina similar manner by buttons 2l and 28am-d holes 21 and 28. Thebottom of the iiap' is permanently secured' to the skirt below the central opening as shown by the concealed stitching indicated by the numeral 29. This flap 23 may also be in the .form of one largepleat and stitched at the inside' of l the spaced seams indicated by dotted lines SIL-3l);l
The skirt portion is also provided with sr'iall"y pleated portions 3| and 32 which are -gathered at the waist band I2 and sewed thereto. 'I'hese pleats may be conveniently let out when it is desired to enlarge the skirt.
Another `important feature of the improved garment is the arrangement of the blouse vto provide a brassire for holdingl the breasts in proper form as well as concealing the same from View when the flapI 23 is open for inspection of the abdomen of the person. The brassire is made by gathered. portions 33 andv 34` vforming the upper edge of the opening 22 in the blouse.` These gathered portions are adapted to receive a draw string 35 so that the size may be adjusted as desired. The brassire as well as the opening in garment front are completely covered by the flap 23 when the same is secured by the top button fasteners 24, 25 and 26.
Another important feature of a garment con,-
lil)
structed and arranged in accordance with the present invention is the provision of a cape 36 for covering the arms and shoulders. This cape also includes a rectangular flap member 31 secured thereto for overlying and covering the opening formed by the backless portion of the blouse. This cover portion is sewed to the inside of the cape 36 adjacent the neck portion as indicated by stitching 38 so that it is free to cover the back and be tucked under and be secured by the waist band I2. The cape is further removably secured in place by the provision of button holes 4I) and 4I on the marginal front edges. These holes are adapted to be engaged by buttons 24, 25 and 2B at the front portion of the blouse so that the cape shall be adjusted to size and convenience of the person.
Having thus described a clinical or maternity garment constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, the many features and advantages are as follows: The garment as shown in Figures 1 and 2 entirely covers all parts of the body and presents a neat and dressy appearance. When an examination of any part of the anatomy is desired, that part of the body may be exposed without unduly exposing the surrounding parts. For example, if an inspection of either or both arms is desired, the cape may be loosened by front bottoms 24 and 26. If an inspection of the back is desired, the cape with its flap 3'I is removed. Then again if the abdomen portion of the body is to be exposed, the flap 23 is lowered to the waist by loosening only topbuttons 24, 25 and 26. When such an examination is made, the brassire portions 33k and 34 conceal the breasts. If the physician desires to examine the breasts, the vbrassire portion is loosened. In a similar manner it will be obvious that the garment may be opened at any principal part of the anatomy Without unduly exposing the surrounding parts.
Another important feature of the novell garment arrangement is that if the patient is too ill to be moved, the entire garment may be removed or changed with a minimum -amount of disturbance to the patient by loosening the `waist band -ties I3-I4 and the neck band ties 2li-2 I.
ment may be quickly and comfortablyadjusted to any ordinary sized person.
