" 7 Claims. (c1. 189- 46) This invention relates to door constructions generally. More particularly it relates to a novel form of door construction having a window therein and including means for mounting the window 5 in permanent sealed relation with respect to the framework of the door. I
It is a primary object of the present invention to provide a door construction which is extremely easily and simply fabricated from sheet metal 10 stampings and which is provided with means for easily and conveniently permanently mounting a window in the door in such a manner that marginal edges of the window are tightly sealed with respect to the adjacent portions of the door frame.
15 It is a still further object of the invention to providea sheet metal door construction which includes a pair of sheet metal stampings which are removably secured together in their peripheral edges and each of whichis provided with a sub- 20 stantially identical aperture or opening therein adapted for the reception of a window. The present invention contemplates the utilization of a novel sealing frame surrounding a window pane, which frame is provided with portions adapted to 25 sealingly engage the adjacent marginal edges of the window openings formed in the door panel in order that the window pane will be sealed with respect to the panels making up the framework tion of substantially uniform cross-sectional con- 35 figuration around its entire peripheraledge, and
which door frameworkhas provided in the hollow box section structure thereof a latch mechanism housed therein. o
' Still further the present invention contem- 40 plates the provision of a door construction in which a panel forming the jamb face of the door construction as a whole is provided with a recess or groove extending completely therearound in order to provide means for removably seating a resilient closure member which serves to effect a tight seal between the jamb face of the door and the jamb face of the door opening in which the door-is mounted.
Many other and further important advantages and features of the present invention will become clearly apparent from the following specification, when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof. In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of one embodiment of the improved door construction with portions broken away illustrating the same mounted in a complemental door opening.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 illustrating in detail the cross-sectional configurationof the door construction shown therein and the manner in which the same mates with the door opening in which it is mounted.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary cross-sectionai view taken substantially on the lines 3-3 of Fig. 1, illustrating in detail the cross-sectional configuration of the door frame and the adjacent portion of the jamb face of the door opening with which the door mates.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the lines 44 of Fig. 1, illustrating in detail the specific manner in which the mounting hinges may be secured to the door and door opening framework.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2, illustrating in detail the construction of the improved latch mechanism and the manner in which the same ismounted within the hollow frame work of the door frame.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1, illustrating in further detail the construction and arrangement of parts of the improved latch mechanism.
With more particular reference to the drawings, it will be appreciated that the door construction illustrated therein will find wide and practical utility 'in many and various appiica- 5 tions. However, it will be readily understood that 'the door shown is particularlyadapted for certain specific purposes, such for example as providing a closure for a cabinet or similar housing, in which it is desired that a tight seal may-be ob- 40 tained by the closure of the door. It is readily appreciated that the door construction affords not only a tight closure between the jamb face thereof and the jamb face with thedoor opening with which it is associated, but also includes a particularly tight seal between the frame work of the door and the glass window or pane which is mounted in the door.
While the specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings is merely illustrative of one form which the'present invention 1 may take, it will be readily appreciated that the configuration slightly larger than the door opening with which they are adapted to be associated. It will be seen by reference to Fig. 2 that the stamping II is preformed to provide a lamb face portion it of substantially frusto-conical configuration and is further preformed to provide a continuous circumferentiaily extending rounded recess it completely around the door. It will be seen that this recess i3 is disposed in the lamb face portion ll of the stamping II and, as will hereinafter be more clearly seen, this recess serves to support a resilient sealing strip I4, the construction and operation of which will become more clearly apparent hereinafter.
The stamping II has a flange I! which is offset to lie substantially in a plane parallel to the plane of the door as a whole, and which is adapted to mate with a complemental inturned flange Ii formed upon the outer stamping l I and it will be seen that these two flanges serve to together provide one wall of a rabbet in the iamb face of the door frame as a whole. The stampings l and il may be conveniently removably secured together by means of suitable short screws extend--v ing through these mating flanges i5 and I6 and serving to lock the two stampings forming the door together in assembled relationship.
Each of the stampings i0 and H is provided with an opening therein, the openings being of substantially the same size and registering with each other. The marginal edges of the panels and II are preformed to provide inturned flanges I8 and I9 respectively lying in substantially spaced parallel planes and lying substantially parallel to the plane of the door. It will be clear that the stampings are formed of such configuration that when the two stampings I0 and II are secured together by means of the screws I! passing through the mating flanges I5 and I6 thereof the flanges l8 and I! which serve to deflne the window opening in the door will inherently lie substantially parallel in spaced relation with respect to each other. v
A glass pane or window ii is utilized for the purpose of permanently closing and sealing the window opening provided by the sheet metal panels II and II. This glass pane is of a conflguration substantially similar in shape but slightly larger than the openings deflned by the flanges II and II. A sealing strip formed of resilient material such, for example, as rubber or suitable composition. is provided for mounting the pane II in sealing engagement with the inwardly extending flanges II and II formed by the panels I. and II as above described. This sealing strip His provided in its body portion with a panel adapted to tightly receive the marginal edgeof the pane 2| and is provided with over-lying side portions 23 and 24 which respectively surround and engage the marginal edges of the flanges l8 and II respectively in order to affect a tight seal with respect thereto. It has been found particularly preferable'in the manufacture of doors of this general character to make the strip of a length so that when fltted on to the pane II it will tightly engage the peripheral edge of this pane, due to its inherent resilience. Consequently the strip 22 when fltted on to the marginal edge of the pane 2| is substantially tensioned throughout its entire length and effects a tight seal with respect to the marginal edge of the pane. Further it will be appreciated that the over-lying portions 22 and 23 are so disposed that the reaiiience of the material tends to cause these overlying portions to tightly engage the marginal edges of the flanges l8 and i9 respectively, and further tension the resilient material from which the strip is formed in order that a tight seal between the window pane 2i and the flanges as and I! will inherently be maintained.
In the assembly of these parts described above, the resilient sealing strip 22 is flrst tensioned and fitted on the marginal edge of pane 2 I. The overlying portion 23 thereof may then be deflected by means of a suitable tool in order that it will receive and tightly grip the flange l8 and stamping ii. The stamping Il may be dropped into position and over-lying portion 24 of the sealing strip may be deformed to engage the marginal edge of the flange it, thus assembling the panels in substantially their flnal position. The stampings may then be secured together by means of screws passing through the mating flanges I5 and It, thus securing the, door construction as a whole in assembled relation. The opening in which the door is mounted may include a member 25 which extends continuously around the door opening and which is provided with substantially frustro-conical jamb face adapted to cooperate with the jamb face'of the stamping it. The jamb face portion II is preferably formed to provide a portion thereof which is adapted to cooperate with the resilient sealing strip I so that when the door is swung to closed. position the sealing strip ll will be slightly compressed between the jamb face of the door and the Jamb face of the door opening in order to insure a tight and effective seal therebetween.
It will be seen that the two stampings l0 and II are so constructed and formed that they inherently provide a structure of box section of substantially uniform cross section extending entirely around the window opening of the door, which framework mates with the lamb face of the door opening and, as has been described above, provides an effective and tight seal therebetween. The door may be conveniently mounted for pivotal movement with respect to the door opening -by means of suitable hinges, clearly seen in Figs.
1, 2, and 4. These hinges preferably include an arm 32 which is pivotally connected in a suitable bracket 3! to the paneling surrounding the door opening, and has pivotally connected at its outer end a second arm the inner end of which is pivotally connected to a suitable bracket 33 secured to the mating flanges of the panels l0 and Ii. The arm 30 preferably extends beyond point of pivotal connection thereof with the arm 32 and is provided with a bent over portion or lug 35 which serves to limit opening movement of the door within a predetermined angular range.
Suitable latch mechanism, the operating portions of which are housed within the hollow box section door frame, is mounted therein for maintaining the door in closed position. This latch mechanism preferably cooperates with a fixed catch member I! which is permanently secured to the jamb face portion of the door opening and may be of any suitable and conventional form. Any suitable latch mechanism as may be desired may conveniently be utilized for the purpose of retaining the. door in tightly closed position, and such latch mechanism may be conveniently mounted within the hollow box section framework of the door. The specific latch mechanism illustrated in the drawings has been found particularly adaptable for utilization in connection with door construction of this generic type. The speciflc latch mechanism as shown includes a latch handle member 40, which may conveniently be formed of pressed metal and which is pivoted for free movement upon a transversely extending pivot pin 4|. The pivot pin II has its ends mounted in brackets H which are secured to panels II and II by means of suitable screws or rivets 43, and a latch member 45 also preferably formed of sheet metal is pivoted for movement about pin 4|, and is preferably disposed inwardly of the latch operating handle on saidpivot. This latch member has a recess which is adapted to engage the catch 31 to maintain the door in tightly closed position; This latch member 45 is resiliently urged into either one of two limit positions by means of a toggle spring 46, which is guided during movement by means of a pin 41 extending axially through the spring and seating in a suitable recess formed in the wall on which the spring is mounted.
A transversely extending pin it is carried by the latch member and the ends of this pin extend beyond the sides of the latch member and enter suitable arcuately disposed slotsflormed in the side wall of the operating handle 40. It will be apparent that the length of this arcuate slot, in which the ends of the pin travel, serves to limit the pivotal movement of the latch member about the pivot pin 4|.
By reference to Fig. 2, it will be apparent that when the latch handle 40 is pulled outwardly, an arcuate movement of the latch member will be effected, serving to disengage this latch memher from the catch 31 consequently releasing the door, which may then be swung outwardly. This movement to release the latch member 45 from the catch 31 serves to swing the toggle spring 41 past the dead center position and retain the latch in open position. It will be apparent that when the door is slammed, the catch 31 will engage the surface of the recess in the front face of the latch l5 and automatically effect the pivotal movement of this latch member about the pivot pin ll, automatically urging the door into closed position with a predetermined pressure.
While but one embodiment of the invention has been described in the foregoing speciflcation and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, it will be appreciated that this specific embodiment of the invention is merely illustrative of the generic inventive concept presented in this application. Many other and further modifications falling within the scope of the invention as defined in the subioined claims will become apparent to those skilled in the art.
What is claimed is:
-l. A door construction including in combination a pair of sheet metal panels having registering apertures therein, the outer marginal edges of said panels being secured together, a glass receiving frame extending entirely around said apertures and having a recess adapted to receive the marginal edge of each of said panels in said apertures and a glass pane mounted in said glass receiving frame.

A door construction including in combination a pair of sheet metaipaneis having registering apertures therein, the marginal edges of said panels being secured together, a resilient glass receiving element having portions adapted to engage the marginal edges of each of said panels around said apertures, and a glass pane mounted in said glass receiving frame.
3. A door construction including in combination a pair of sheet metal panels secured together in their outer marginal edges, and having registering apertures therein, a framing element extending entirely around said apertures and interconnecting the inner marginal edges of said panels providing with said panels a structure of hollow box section extending completely around said apertures.
4. A door construction including in combination a pair of sheet metal panels secured together in their peripheral edges and having registering apertures therein, the marginal edges of said panels surrounding said apertures lying in spaced, substantially parallel relation, a pane for closing said opening, a resilient framing element tensioned to grip the marginal edges of said frame and tensionally gripping the flanges surrounding said window opening.

A door construction comprising a pair of sheet metal panels, one of said panels being preformed to provide a rabbeted jamb face for said door, the other of said panels having a flange thereon adapted to mate with said first mentioned panel in overlapping relation in one wall of said rabbet, said panels being removably secured together through said mating flanges.

A door construction comprising a pair of complemental sheet metal members having reg- 1 istering apertures therein, said members having flanges in their outer marginal edges adapted to mate with each other in overlapping relation to provide a double thickness flange at the outer marginal edge of said door, each of said panels being provided with a flange around the aperture therein, said flanges adapted to lie in spaced relation, a resilient channel-shaped element interconnecting said flanges and a glass pane having its marginal edge seated in the channel of said resilient element thereby closing the apertures in said panels.
7. A door construction comprising a pair of sheet metal panels each having an aperture therein, the outer marginal edges of said panels being flanged and adapted to be secured together with said flanges in mating relation, said panels being provided with continuous flanges extending around and defining the apertures therein, a resilient sealing strip having a channel therein adapted to receive a glass pane, a glass pane seated in said channel, said sealing strip being seated upon and retained in position by the flanges surrounding the apertures in said panels whereby said pane serves to close said apertures.
