E. R. FREDERICK Plant Protector.
No. 212,306. v I Patented Feb. 18,1879.
WITNESSES: S 6' 2 I ;/ZMG%VENTOR ATTORNEY Y NFETERS. FHOTO LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIE.
EDWIN R. FREDERICK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO RUDOLPH BOLLIGER, OF SAME PLACE.
IM PROVEM ENT IN. PLANT-PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,306, dated February 18, I879; application filed August 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. FREDERIGK,
of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Plant-Protector, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a wicker cover, the vertical ribs of which are secured to a solid top or handle, constructed as hereinaftershown, and project below the lowest of the horizontal ribs, with which the said vertical ribs are interwoven, and are sharpened for entranceinto the earth, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is an elevation, Fig. 2 is a plan or top view, and'Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, of the invention.
The protector consists of a wicker-basket or frame, A, which is adjusted over a plant, and can be held in place by the projections B of its ribs extending into the earth. 0 is a handle or top, ,into a part of which the ends I) of the frame-splinters A are inserted and secured, the splinters being spread to a graceful shape, and strengthened at the top of the device by contact with the lower edges, to, of the base of the top or handle. This construction makes this protector much stronger than wicker-work protectors made without a solid top. The handle or top 0 also enables it to be easily carried and operated.
While the basket protects a plant from the blighting effects of the sun and frost, its meshes or spaces between the interwoven twigs or splinters permit a free circulation of air, necessary for its life.
I claim as my invention- In a wicker-work plant-protector, vertical ribs having sharpened ends, projecting below the lowest of the horizontal ribs, with which said ribs are interwoven, combined with the top or handle 0, having a base, into which the ends of the splinters are inserted and secured, and edges a, to give shape to the upper part of the protector, as specified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto sign my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWIN R. FREDERICK.
