UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VERMIN ELIMINATING DEVICE Absolom D. Purifoy, Mobile, Ala. Application October 5, 1936, Serial No. 104,154
, 1 Claim.
The invention relates to a vermin eliminating device and more especially to a gravity feed apparatus for preventing termites in buildings.
The primary object of the invention is .the
5 provision of an apparatus of this character,
wherein the wood material of a building can be protected for elimination of termites or other insects, the apparatus being arranged at the foundation of such building and through the 10 use of troughs insect destroying substance can be held therein for the elimination of such insects to avoid destruction to the building thereby.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an apparatusof this character, wherein the troughs are mountedin a novel manner at the foundation of a building so that such troughs can be properly positioned for the feed of liquid therein, the apparatusbeing novel in its entirety. A further object of the invention is theprovi- 20 sion of an apparatus of this character, which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective in its operation, readily and easily applied to a building, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the foundation of a building showing the apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation of one of the troughs employed with the apparatus and portions of the trough being broken away.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the trough adjusted.
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical transverse s'ec-, tional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 2.
Similar reference characters indicate corredicular portion of the foundation A to be disposed horizontally and are provided with upper out-turned ears i2, the fasteners for the rails being indicated at I3 for permanent securing of the same in place. Adjustably carried by these rails in and II are inner and outer troughs I4 and i5, respectively, each having a vertical inner wall i6 provided at intervals with vertical slots l1 accommodating headed guide pins or lugs l8 which are fixed .in the rails l0 and ii and these 10 troughs are adapted to contain a liquid for destroying insects, as, for example, termites destructive to woodwork, the liquid being indicated at [9.
The upper edge of the inner wall l6 of each rough l4 and I5 is out-turned at 20 and extended therefrom is an outwardly inclined overhang or shield 2i for the upper open side of the trough and this overhang or shield extends beyond the trough for a determined distance to avoid the deposit within said trough of leaves, twigs or foreign matter.
Threaded in the ears i2 are adjusting screws 22, each having its lower end swiveled at 23 in the portion 20 of each trough l4 and I5 and the purpose of these screws 22 is to enable the troughs to be disposed level because in many instances the house settling would carry the troughs .from a level resultant from such settling of the building.
Between the troughs I4 and i5 and communicating therewith is a liquid lead 24 while conis arranged an adjustable float 21 for controlling a valve 28 at the discharge end of a liquid supply conduit or pipe 29 opening into the said tank 26 and in this manner liquid is fed to the respective troughs II and I5, the float 21 within the tank 26 regulating the level of the liquid within said troughs, the said float being adjusted to the desired level required within the trough of said liquid. 1.
What is claimed is:
A vermin eliminating device for a perpendicular support of a building, comprising a pair of troug s arranged horizontally at opposite sides of the aid support and coextensive therewith, a liquid t be carried through the support between said troughs and connected with the latter for communication of the said troughs with each 60 other, an overhang associated with each trough and extended outwardly slightly beyond the same, and means for supplying liquid to one of the troughs for the filling of all the troughs at a determined level.
ABBOIDM D. PURIFOE.
