18 Claims.
This invention relates to cutter chains and more particularly to improvements in a cutter bit and bit holding means of a mining machine cutter chain.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved mining machine cutter chain. Another object is to provide an improved adjustable positioning and holding means for a cutter bit. A fury ther object is to provide an improved bit holding means for adjusting a cutter bit into different angularly related positions with respect to a bit block whereby but a single form of bit block may be employed to attain all positions of the cutter bit. Yet another object is toy provide a cutter bit J of an improved design to obtain improved cutting means, and due to its particular shape, greatly improving the distribution of heat at the cutting points. A still further object is to provide an improved bit holding means for positionlng a cutter bit in different angularly related po'- sitions and end-for-end relations with respect to a bit block. These and other objects and advantages of the invention will, however, hereinafter more fully appear.

In this illustrative embodiment of the invention there is sho-wn a bit block I,` a series of which are adapted to be pivotally connected together by suitable strap links or otherwise to form an endless cutter chain in a well known manner. The bit block I has a lateral boss or lug 2 provided with a longitudinal bore 3, the inner pe- 50;V riphery of which is serrated at 4. Receivable in the longitudinal bore 3 is the shankV 5 of a bit holder 6, the latter herein composed of two mating parts 'I and 8 of semi-circular cross section and:

with which the illustrative embodiment of the' (o1. 26a-33) I t ri'phery of the shank 5 is toothed at 9 forengagement with the serrations in the lug bore to hold the holder against angular displacement in the bore. In this instance, each part of the bit holder 6 is recessed at I0, and these recesses in the 5N bit holder parts cooperate to form a socket I I for receiving a cutter bit I2 of improved design.v
The cutter bit I2 is herein of the so-called detachable type, preferably stamped out of sheet metal into the desired shape and suitably tempered to attain the desired hardness. The body I3 of this cutter bit is preferably generally V- shape in cross section, and the ends of the body are slabbed OIT at I4 to form relatively inclined faces lying in the plane sides `of an obtuse dihedral angle, these slabbed oi ends providing a pair of cutting points I5, I5 at each end of the bit on the same side of the bit, the cutting points being formed on the` iianged legs of the V. The bit, due to its particular shape, tends to reduce do concentration of heat at the cutting points of the bit, this being a result, in the main, of the relatively thin cross section of the bit body.
The socket Il in the bit holder is also preferably ofgenerally V-shape for receivingthe V- shaped bit body, and the holder parts 'I and 8 i have portions I6, I6 projecting within the V- shaped recess in the bit and shaped to conform with the inner contour of the bit. The semi-circular rear end portions of the bit holder parts cooperate to form a bolt-like portion I1, to which is threadedly connected a tightening nut I8vengaging the rear face of the bit block lug. This nut, when tightened, pulls the holder axially rearwardly with respect to the bit block `lug to clamp the bit against the forward face of the bit block lug. This bolt-like portion I1 is annularly gro-oved at I9 for receiving a snap ring 20 to provide an abutment for the nut I8 to prevent inadvertent release of the nut from the bolt. By releasing the snap ring and the nut I8 from. the bolt portion I1 of the holder, the latter may be withdrawn` forwardly in an axial direction from the lug bore, and the two parts 'I, 8 thereof separated to release the cutter bit from its socket.. When one cutting end of the cutter bit becomes dull the bit may be turned end-for-end withnthe holder socket or the bit holder may be turned within the bit block lug bore to present sharpl cutting points to the work. When the bit becomes dull it may, due to the inexpensive design, be discarded and replaced by a newv bit. By changing the connection of the teeth on thev holder shank with the serrations in the lug b ore the annular position of the bit with reitf- spect to the bit block may be changed as desired.
The same is made reversible simply by changing the end-for-end position of the bit holder with respect to the bit block lug, the bit block being of a symmetrical design to receive the latter at either end thereof. Other manners of use and advantages of the improved cutter chain structure will be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art.
While there is in this application specifically described one form which the invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that thisA form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a cutter chain, a chain block, a reversible cutter bit having its body formed with a pair of distinct spaced cutting points at each end thereof, all of said cutting points projecting from the bit body in the same direction, and bit holding means for holding said cutter bit in position on said chain block with a pair of said cutting points projecting in cutting position from said chain block, said cutter bit being reversible end for end with respect to said holding means to dispose said other pair of cutting points in cutting position with respect to said chain block.
2. In` a cutter chain, a chain block, a reversible Cutter bit having at each end thereof a pair of distinct spaced cutting points, all of said cutting points formed on the same side of said bit, and bit holding means for holding said bit in position on said chain block with a pair of said cutting points projecting in cutting position from said chain block, said bit being reversible end for end with respect to said holding means to dispose the other pair of cutting points in cutting position with respect to said chain. block.
3. In a cutter chain, a chain block, a reversible cutter bit having a body of generally V-shape cross section having at each end thereof a pair of cutting points, the points formed on each leg of the V, and bit holding means for holding said cutter bit in position on said chain block with a pair of said cutting points projecting in cutting position from said block, said cutter bit being reversible'end for end'with respect to said holding means to dispose the other pair of cutting points in cutting position with respect to said chain block.
4. In a cutter chain, a chain block, a reversible cutter bit of generally V-shape cross section having a pair of cutting points formed at each end thereof at the same side of the bit body, and bit holding means for holding said cutter bit in position on said chain. block with a pair of cutting points projecting in cutting position from said spaced portions having parallel front edges, the.
opposite ends of each edge having cutting portions formed thereon, two distinct spaced cutting portions at each end of the body at the same side of the body and each cutting portion having a rearwardly and inwardly inclined rear surface.
7 A cutter bit having its body formed with side spaced portions provided with parallel front edges each terminating in a cutting portion individual thereto at each end of the bit, two cutting portions at each end of the body, and each cutting portion having a rearwardly and inwardly inclined rear surface.
8. Acutter bit having a body of generally V- shape cross section having at each end a pair of spaced cutting points and each cutting point having a` rearwardly inclined receding surface.
9. A cutter bit having a body formed with four distinct spaced cutting points, a pair at each bit end, and each pair of cutting points projecting in the same direction from the bit body and each cutting point having a rearwardly inclined receding surface.
. 10. A bit holder formed of mating parts, each having a recess, the recesses cooperating to form a socket of generally V-shape for receiving a cutter bit of' generally V-shape cross section.
1l. A stamped metal bit bent into shape with its sides in angularly disposed relation and having cutting points at the ends of its angularly disposed sides and each cutting point having a rearwardly inclined receding surface.
12. In a cutter chain, a bit block having a centrally located lateral lug, the lug having a longitudinal bore, a bit holder having a shank receivable in said lug bore, a forwardly projecting portion having a bit receiving socket, a cutter bit receivable in said socket and having a pair of spaced cutting points, and means engageable with the holder shank for clamping said bit against the forward face of said lug with said spaced cutting points projecting in cutting position from said block lug.
13. In a cutter chain, a bit block having a centrally located lateral lug, the lug having a longitudinal bore, a bit holder having a shank receivable in said lug bore, a forwardly projecting portion having a bit receiving socket, a cutter bit receivable in said socket, and means engageable with the holder shankV for clamping said bit against one end face of said lug, said holder being reversible end for end with respect to said lug for clamping said cutter bit adjacent the opposite end face of said lug to reverse the position of the bit on the bit block.
14. A cutter bit having at each end thereof a pair of spaced cutting points at the extremities of similar tapering projections, the body of said bit between said projections cut back so that each cutting point is formed at the junction of a straight surface connecting points at opposite ends of the bit and an oblique surface left by the cutting away specied.
15. A cutter bit having four cutting points disposed at the corners of a rectangle and having a body two of whose sides follow sidesof such rectangle and deeply notched between the pairs of points respectively at the opposite ends of said sides.
16. A cutter bit having a body formed at each end with a pair of spaced projections, the inner g edges of which extend along lines converging at thelong'itudinalfcenter of the bit, and parallel lateral edges, the inner converging edges of the projections and said parallel edges terminating Cil in cutting points at the extremities of said spaced projections.
17. A cutter bit having a body formed at each end with a pair of spaced projections, the inner edges of which extend along lines converging at `the longitudinal center of the bit, and parallel lateral edges, the inner converging edges of the projections and said parallel edges terminating in cutting points at the extremities of said spaced projections, the rearward surfaces of said projections inclined inwardly and rearwardly.
18. A double-ended cutter bit having a body in the shape of a trapezoid viewed in side elevation and having parallel sides and relatively inclined ends, said body formed with a pair of distinct spaced cutting points at each end thereof.
