The apparatus comprises spaced side plates I, 2 in which is journalled the main shaft 3 carrying cams and like rotary elements by which the mechanisms efiecting the various operations of folding the wrapper, delivering powder therein, punching and consolidating the packet, are controlled, a complete sequence of operations being performed during a double revolution of the shaft 3 in opposite directions. A pad consisting of a number of vertically disposed wrapper sheets 4, Figs. 1 and 5, is supported on horizontal guides 5 and pressed against upper and lower bar stops 6 by a back plate 1 engaged by a lever I pivoted at 3 and urged by springs ll to feed the wrappers towards stops G.
Wrapper selection and first wrapper folding mechanism A pair of rubber faced grip bars ii extending horizontally are carried on gripper levers l2 on each side of the machine pivotally mounted at l3 on arms l4 which are in turn pivoted at IE to rocker arms l6 secured on a spindle I 1 journalled in the side plates of the machine. Arms i4 and it maybe otherwise associated for relative movement. The gripper levers 12 are controlled by springs 13 so that they tend normally to open and they have curved recesses or bays in.their outer edges with which pins IS on the rocker arms Ii cooperate in such manner that when arms I4 and it are together, the pins are opposite the bays and the levers I 2 may open as in Fig. 1 but when arms l4 and I6 are apart as in Fig. 3 the pins I! move out of the bays along the levers i2 and the latter close. The grip levers i2 are rotated from their lower position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, to a position, shown in full lines, against the pad of. wrappers 4, by rotation of the spindle I1 carrying the rocker arms I3 and arms 14 closed and the grips open. This movement is effected by a pin 23 on a cam 2! on the main shaft 3 entering, as the cam has rotated in the direction of the arrow, laws 22 on a link 23 pivoted to a crank 24 on the spindle H, the downward movement of pin 24 raising the grips to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 1, with the bars ll pressing against the first wrapper of the pad. At this position, the tips of the arms l4 meet and are arrested by stops 25 on the side plates, the continuing movement of the pin 20 turning the rocking arms l6 further forward towards the pad Fig. 2, so that the pins i9 ride out of the bays in the grip levers 12 closing the latter against the action of the spring l3, and ultimately tightly nipping the front wrapping sheet of the pad and imparting to it the first half fold, Figs. 3 and 9. The levers l2 in this closed position are tightly wedged between the pins IS. The engaging position of the grips relatively to the height of the wrappers in the pad is such that this first fold is formed non-centrally not quite half way up the sheet, so that one of the doubled parts of the wrapper is longer than the other, Fig. 9, forming an exten sion or lip 26. When, on the reverse rotation of the shaft 3, the open arms I and I4 return with levers l2 held closed by the frictional grip of the pins II, as in Fig. 3, drawing the nipped wrapper from the pad past the stops 3, the arms l4 meet other stops 33 on the side plates, the V-folded wrapper being in a vertical position, and while it is still nipped, fingers 21 carried from a springcontrolled spindle 23 are released to press the-"projecting lip 23 of the larger side against a curved plate 23 and partly open the V-fold. The cam pin 23 then passes out of the jaws 22 leaving levers l2 closed and still holding the wrapper. At the beginning of the next reversal of shaft 3 another pin 20a on the cam engages under the prong 23b lifting the link 23 slightly, which causes the rocker arms l6 to continue their downward movement and close against the arms l4 still arrested by stops 33, the pins it moving opposite the bays in the grip levers i2, permitting them to open and release the wrapper 4 which remains suspended as shown in dotted lines Fig. 1 by its lip 23 held by the fingers 21. At this stage a measured quantity of powder is delivered into the valley of the folded wrapper as explained later and the fingers 21 are immediately released, the wrapper weighted with its powder content falling on to a stop 34, Fig. 'l. The spindle 23 c rrying the fingers 21 is controlled by a spring 23a tending toengage the finger grip and angular movement of the spindle to release the grip or permit it to close is controlled by the contour of the cam 2| the edge of which engages pin 3| on lever 32 pivotally connected by link 33 to a short crank on the spindle 23.
Lip-folding mechanism When the filled wrapper 4 is released by the fingers 21 and falls on the stop 34, the sides of the wrapper lie in open V-formation as shown in Fig. 7 between a folder plate 33 and two horizontal rollers 31 journalled in the side plates, theupper roller being mounted in slots 31b and spring controlled at 31a. The lip 23 of the wrapper in this position projects above the lower edge of a lipfolding bar 33 pivoted at 39. The folding plate 36 is pivotally mounted at 43 in a carrier 4| pivoted at 42, a spring 43 tending to maintain the carrier in its raised position shown. in Fig. 'l, and the carrier remains in such position while the rollered end 46 of an arm 41 on the carrier rides against the inner convex edge of a cam 44 on the shaft 3, as is occurring in Fig. 7. Pivotal movement of the folder plate 33 while the carrier is in this position is eifected by another cam 43 on the shaft 3 engaging pin 43 on lever 49a pivoted at 53 and controlled by spring ii, a roller, 52 on the lever engaging a resilient blade 53 on the weighted bell crank arm of the folder plate 36. As cam 43 rotates in the direction .of the arrow, Fig. 7, the cam hump engages pin 49 rocking the lever 43a, and plate 36 closes the V-fold of the packet sweeping the lip 26 under the lip folder 33, and turning it down as shown in Fig. 6. Simultaneously the lip folder 38 pivots to compress the folded lip indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 8, and immediately the higher part of hump 61 on cam 66, Fig. 6, .further rotates lip folder 88 to impart a final crease to the lip. The folder plate 86 is then drawn completely down and held there by the outer convex edge of cam 66, clear of the rollers 81. The wrapper is now folded as shown in Fig. 18..
Packet doubling fold mechanism As the folded packet with closed lip 26 lies End folding mechanism As indicated in Fig. 14, the ends 6a of the doubled packet project at each side of table 68. On the retreat of the blade 58 these ends are bent up round the table and overlapped byfolders 65, Figs. 13, 14 and 16, consisting of flexible plates 65, notched at 68, Fig. 16, to permit passage of a punch 68 and carried on arms 66 pivoted at 61 on the frame. The movements of arms 66 are effected by the oscillation of crank 62, pin 63 on which engages the slotted arm of a lever I8, Fig. 6, on a shaft II, the other arm of the lever carrying projections 12, set one in advance of the other, engaging heel plates I3 on folder arms 66. As the lever I8 is rocked up from the dotted position to that shown in full lines, Fig. 6, the right projection'lz, Fig. 13, first engages its heel plate I8 and raises the right folder 65, the left projection I2 then raising the other folder 65, so that the ends of the packet are overlapped when the folders are finally closed, Fig. 16. The end folders again open to the position shown in Fig. 13, on reversal of crank 62, by projections 12 rising and engaging brackets I4 on the arms 66. The lever I8 which thus operates the end folders 66 also actuates a tongueing punch 68, and packet consolidating mechanism.
Punch mechanism Mounted above the table 68, as best seen in Figs. 1 and 6, is a punch 68 slidable vertically in guides 15 and so spring controlled at 16 that the punch tends to rise to the position shown in Fig. 1. The punch has a bevelled foot 11 and as it descends passes through notches 68 in the overlapped folders 65 into an aperture in the table 68. When the ends of the packet are folded one upon another and while still held by folders 65, closed as in Fig. 16, the punch 68 descends through notches 68 and punches out from the paper layers of the superposed ends, a tongue I8, Fig. 1'7, leaving an integral hinge connection, because of the bevelling of the punch foot I1, which is at the rear of the tongue when the packet is being pushed from the table by the next succeeding packet, the tongue being wiped back about its hinge to lie underneath the ends 6a, so that when the packet is subsequently consolidated the tongue interlocks the ends. After the tongue has been formed the punch rises and the end folders 65 open out. The movement of the punch is effected by the rocking of lever I8, to the outer end of which is pivoted at 18 a bowed link 88 connected to anarm 8I pivoted on the frame and engaging upper and lower pins 82 on the punch bar. A lost motion connection of the link 88 to the arm 8| is provided by a slot 88 in the link engaging a pin 86 on the arm. As crank 62 rocks lever 18 to the position shown in full lines, Fig. 6, the punch is drawn down and rises again when lever 18 is rearwardly rocked, the crank pin 68 not leaving the slotted arm during these movements. when however the pin 68 leaves the slotted arm to engage the slotted bracket 66 of the doubling blade, the spring I6 keeps .the slotted arm in the dotted position, Fig. 6, for
re-engagement by the crank pin. The packet with its ends folded and connected together by the tongue lock is pushed from the table 68 by the next entering packet.
Packet consolidating and delivery mechanism The packet falls on a tipping tray 86. Figs. 1, 4, 6 and 13, pivoted at 86, on which it is consolidated by the action of a centrally recessed rubber pad 88 on a flexible arm 88 pivoted at M at the side of the machine, the arm being spring controlled and tending to rise to the position shown in Fig. 13. When the bowed link 88 descends to operate the punch an angled shoulder on the link engages the back of arm 88 forcing the pad 88 against the packet and consolidating it on the tray. The packet creases or folds are thus finally set, and its powder content flattened. When the link 88 again rises allowing the pad 88 to rise under its spring control, a pawl 88 on the link 88 engages an angled arm 61 on the pivot of the tray, tilting the latter to the position shown in chain dotted lines-Fig. 13,-the packet sliding off the tray, which falls back to the horizontal, being non-centrally pivoted. n the subsequent downward movement of the link 88 the pawl 88 trails idly past the arm 81.
Powder measuring and delivering mechanism In connection with such a machine any suitable type of measuring or weighing apparatus may be combined or provided to deliver a prede- 1 in loose 'form into a partly folded wrapper it spreads laterally therein beyond the points where the ends are later folded, such folding then resulting in a further loss and difiusion of powder through the open ends. This is prevented by delivering the powder into the folded wrapper as a consolidated lump, thus keeping all the powder in the centre of the packet which may be then folded without diffusion, the powder lump being however not so tightly consolidated but that it may subsequently be spread evenly in the closed packet by compressing the latter. With this object, in the base of the powder supply hopper 82, is journalled a spindle 88 which carries an agltator such as a wire ring 86 and a presser blade 85, Figs. 1 and 18. A gear wheel I86, Fig. 4, is oscillated by a pinion I86 on the main shaft 8, Fig. 4, and gear I86 reciprocates a rod I88, a long pin II6 on which controlled by a spring III engages a. notch I I8 in a peripherally grooved disc I82 on the spindle of which is an arm I88, another rod I I6 engaging and rocking a forked lever III on the spindle 88, a certain amount of lost motion being provided for. The arm I88 is pivotally connected at IM to a channel section powder carrier 81, the angularsweep of the arm hopper, withdraw a measured quantity of powder and deliver it into a wrapper. A roller I06 on one end of the pivoted carrier is constrained by the pull of a spring I II to ride against a track bar 99 of such contour that the carrier enters an aperture 96 in the hopper horizontally, Fig. 1, but at its terminal return movement tilts vertically, Fig. 4. A measuring spoon 88 is so pivoted in the carrier at I09 that it lies therein as the carrier enters the hopper, the presser being then raised, shown in dotted lines, and the agitator 94 moved, loosening the powder which falls into the uncovered recess of the spoon 98. The rod II6 then turns down the presser blade 95 consolidating the powder in the semi-circular recess of the spoon. The carrier, during filling is stationary in-the hopper, the pin Ill havingpassed up out of notch II3, spring II2 extending, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 4, the rod I03 riding in the disc groove and re-engaging the notch on descent. On withdrawal of the carrier excess powder is wiped off by the top edge of aperture 96. As the carrier reaches the end of its delivery movement, it' tilts to a vertical position, Fig. 4, due to the sharp curve of the track bar 99, and its two deep rear wings I01 engage within a fixed channelled member I08 to form an enclosed shute. Simultaneously an arm I I0, Fig. 1, on the spoon pivot meets a curved abutment I I I, tilting the spoon forward from the now vertical carrier, Fig. 6, the spoon tip striking the back of the shute I08 and knocking out the powder lump which falls into the V-folded wrapper 4, the consolidation preventing lateral spread of the powder on impact.
To ensure that all the powder is delivered, the tilted spoon is given a final shake. After the carrier has been stopped at its delivery position,
Fig. 4, and the spoon has tilted, the pin I passes on, leaving notch H3 and riding down the disc edge. On the return movement the slipping grip of the pin riding on the disc is just able to slightly lift the arm I00, but directly the pin reaches the notch and is snapped sharply therein by spring H2; this action jerks the arm down again, shaking the inverted spoon just before the carrier begins its movement to the hopper, the
spoon falling back into the carrier as the latter assumes a horizontal position.
All the operations described are performed during, and are effected by, one oscillation of the shaft comprising two successive complete revolutions of the main shaft 3 in opposite directions. A clockwise revolution, as viewed in Fig. 1, raises the open grips to the wrappers, closes the grips, raises' the punch and consolidating pad and opens end folders, enters carrier in hopper, closes the v-foldedwrapper and creases the lip, depresses the folder, releases the lip fingers and advances the doubling blade. An anti-clockwise revolution, withdraws the doubled wrapper from the pad, permits fingers to engage lip of wrapper, retracts doubling blade, opens grips, withdraws and tilts carrier, releases lip fingers, closes end folders, punches and consolidates the packet.
We claim:
1. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet,
- causing the carrier intermittently to enter the rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
2. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers; comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, stops for the pad, a spring for urging the pad against the stops, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, relatively movable rocker arms for swinging the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, cam controlled toggle links for swinging the rocker arms and eflecting their relative movement, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam menibers for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
3. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, relatively movable rocker arms for swinging the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double-and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, said grip levers being carried on and movably associated with the rockers, relative movement of the rockers opening and closing the grips, cam controlled toggle links for swinging the rocker arms andeffecting their relative movement, a carrier-for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade cooperating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for' receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
4. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, relatively movable rocker arms for swinging the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, said grip levers being pivoted on one rocker, stops for that rocker, bays in the levers, pins on the other rocker co-operating with the bays, relative movement of the rockers opening and closing the grips, cam controlled toggle links for swinging the rocker arms and effecting their relative movement, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
5. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, .double non-centrally and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, fingers for engaging the doubled sheet by its longer side and suspending it when released by the grips, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet when so suspended, means for releasing the fingers, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam mem- I bers for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
6. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for support ing a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double non-centrally and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a lip formed by the longer side of the doubled sheet, fingers for engaging the doubled sheet by, its lip and suspending it when released by the grips, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
7. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in. parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, an apertured table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, a punch for pressing out a tongue from the overlapped ends into the table aperture, means for pushing the packet off the table to bend the tongue back and lock the ends, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
8. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, a tilting tray on to which the packet is pushed from the table by the following packet, a compression pad for consolidating the packet on the tray, a reciprocating link which compresses the pad and tilts the tray, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
9. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a hopper, a carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, a track for guiding the carrier to and from the hopper and tilting it at the delivery position, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for ,receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
10. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for supporting a pad of wrapper sheets, relatively movable grip levers for engaging the pad, means for pressing the grips while open against the pad and closing them to nip, double and withdraw a single sheet to a vertical position, a hopper, a channelled carrier for delivering material into the valley of the doubled sheet, a track for guiding the carrier to and from the hopper and tilting it at the delivery position, rollers between which the doubled sheet is pushed, a fixed channelled member with which the channelled carrier co-operates when tilted to form a closed shute, a blade co-operating with said rollers to redouble the filled doubled sheet in parallel folds by pushing it through the rollers, a table for receiving the folded sheet from the rollers, pivotal folders for overlapping the ends of the redoubled sheet about the table to form a packet, and cam members for actuating the movable parts of the apparatus mounted on a single oscillating shaft.
11. Apparatus for packeting material in flatly folded wrappers, comprising, guides for support-,
