NFETERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPNER. WASHWGTON D C TAT E S ATENT CHARLES KOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING AND BATH TUB.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,856, dated February 4, 1879; application filed May 2, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Kocn, of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wash-Tub and Bathing-Tub Combined, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I represents a longitudinal section, and Fig. II is a cross-section.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a movable partition in a tub, so that the same may be readily used either as a bathing-tub when said partition is removed, or when the same is in place the tub bebdivided, and thus form two distinct washtu s.
The advantages of this arrangement will be readily understood, and is of great consequence in tenement-houses or in small apartment houses, where there is seldom sufficient room to arrange a separate bathing-room with the necessary tub. Besides, this arrangement saves the necessity of a separate arrangement of water-pipes.
A represents a tub, made of any desired shape and size, conveniently large to be used as a bathing-tub.
Near the middle a movable partition, 0, is fitted, which, when in place, divides the tub into two parts, B and B, forming thus the necessary two wash-tubs. On the top the usual covers 1) I), to close each or both tubs, are arranged.
The partition 0 is provided on the ends and the bottom with a metal projecting piece, n, fitting into suitable grooves in the tub A, to guide and hold the same in its proper place, and has a suitable packing, c, made of a suitable soft material-such as woolen cloth, indiarubber, or its equivalent-to make a tight joint on the ends and bottom.
If desired, two partitions may be arranged in the tub if three wash-tubs should be required, although the usual practice is only two wash-tubs. Each partition must then be provided with the projecting metal piece and the necessary packing on both its ends and bottom.
I am aware that boxes have been constructed and used for various purposes having a removable partition. I am also aware that this feature has been sometimes used in connection with churns; butI am not aware that a watertight removable partition has ever been used for any purpose whatever in connection with a bath-tub.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to CHARLES KOCH.
