3 Claims.
The present invention relates to hack saws and embodies means for adjusting the hack saw frame to accommodate saws of different lengths,
as well as means for mounting the saw blade 5 angularly within the frame.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for securing the blade in angularly adjusted position in the frame together with means for easily and quickly releasing the blade for adjusting or changing the blade and for locking the blade under tension in the frame.
Further objects and advantages reside in the special details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout and in Which:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a hack saw constructed in accordance with the present invention. p

Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view of the outer end of the frame showing the saw mounted in position thereon.
Figure 4 is a sectional View through the outer locking member showing the locking lug.
Figure 5 is an end elevational View of the outer end of the saw frame illustrating the locking recesses.
Figure 6 is a plan view of one of the spring washers and Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the spring arm for securing the frame in adjusted position.
Referring now to the `drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a hack saw frame of substantially L-shaped construction including an outer downwardly positioned end 6 and an end section 'I secured within the upper section 8 of a handle 9. p The section 8 of the handle extends parallel with respect to the end 1 of the frame and is provided with pins I at spaced intervals for engaging notches II formed in the lower edge of the frame section 1. The upper end of the handle 9 is formed with a flange I2 which overlies the upper edge of the frame and forms an abutment therefor. The upper edge of the member 8 is formed with laterally extending pins I3 inserted in openings I4 of lugs I5 extending upwardly from one side of a leaf spring I6 shown in detail in Figure 7, one end I1 of which bears against the upper edge of the frame 5 for yieldably securing the frame in abutting relation with respect to the pins Ill.
vAn angular member I8`is pivoted at I9 to the handle 9, one arm of the member I8 depending downwardly in substantial parallelism with the end 6 of the frame 5 and cooperates therewith to support the saw blade I9 therebetween. The lower ends of each of the members 6 and I8 are formed with bores 20 within which pins 2l are rotatably and slidably positioned, one end of eachof said pins being formed into a substantially U- shaped bracket 22 having a transversely extending pin 23 upon which an end of the saw blade I9 is mounted, the end of the blade being inserted between the parallel sides of said bracket.
The outer end of the pin 2| is formed with a flange head 24 and inwardly thereof is provided a plurality of radially extending locking lugs 25. The adjacent end edge of the saw frames 5 and I8 are formed with notches 26 within which the lugs 25 are adapted to seat, to lock the pins against rotation. Mounted on the pins 2| opposite to the locking lugs and recesses 25 and 26, is a spring washer 21 having a raised part 28 bearing against the U-shaped bracket 22 -to yieldably secure the lugs 25 seated in one of the recesses 26.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that upon the retraction of the respective heads 24 of the pins 2| against the tension of the springs 21 that the saw blade I9 may be rotated within the respective ends of the frame and secured in any one of several angularly adjusted positions.
One end of the angular member I8 extends rearwardly as shown at 29 and lies against the handle 9 and is engageable by the cam head 30 of a control member 3I positioned parallel to the hand grip 9 and pivoted thereto as at 32. 'I'he member 3l is provided with an extension 33 having a tooth edge 34 with which a pawl 35 is engageable for securing the control member in adjusted position. A leaf spring 38 fixed to the handle by a pin 31 bears against the edge of the angular extension 29 opposite from the cams 30 to yieldably maintain the same in engagement therewith.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that by moving the control member 3l rearwardly the lower end of the pivoted angular member I8 will likewise be forced rearwardly creating a tension upon the blade I9 to securely hold the same in the respective bracket 22. When it is desired to remove the blade I9 the frame 5 is pressed upwardly against the action of the spring I1 to remove the pin I0 from its engaged notch I I whereby the tension on the blade is released and the pawl may be removed from engagement with the tooth edge 34 to permit the movement of the control member 3| out of engagement with the upper end 29 of the pivoted frame member I8.
It is believed the operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art without further detailed eX- planation.
Having thus described my invention what I claim iszl. A hack saw frame comprising a handle including a hand grip portion and a frame supporting portion, a frame including a front frame member having a substantially right angle extension in overlapping relation with respect to and slidably carried by the frame supporting portion of the handle, a rear frame member pivotally carried by the frame supporting portion of the handle, means for securing the front frame member in slidably adjusted position with respect to the handle and means carried'by the hand grip portion and arranged to be gripped therewith for releasably securing the ,rear frame member against swinging movement in a direction toward said front frame member.

A hack saw frame comprising a handle including a hand grip portion and a frame supporting portion, a frame 'including a front frame member and a rear frame member, Said front frame member embodying a substantially right angle extension overlapping the frame supporting portion of the handle, a pin and notch engagement between the frame supporting portion and said right angle extension of the front frame member for securing the same in adjusted position, said rear frame member being pivoted to the frame supporting portion of the handle and means pivoted to the hand grip portion and arranged to be gripped therewith for releasably securing the rear frame member against swinging movement in a direction toward said front frame member.
3. A hack saw frame comprising a handle including a hand grip portion and a frame supporting portion, a frame including a front frame member and a rear frame member, said front frame member embodying a substantially right angle extension overlapping the frame supporting portion of the handle, a pin and notch engagement between the frame supporting portion and said right angle extension of the front frame member for securing the same in adjusted position, said rear frame member being pivoted to the frame supporting portion of the handle, a control member for said rear frame member, said control member being pivoted to the hand grip portion and arranged to be gripped therewith and releasably engaging the rear frame member to secure the same against swinging movement in a direction toward the front frame member and pawl and ratchet means securing the control member in engagement with the rear frame member.
