s Claims. (C1. Z55-35) Y 'I'his invention relates to a pipe-rotating appae-ned forming a-lugl5 andalink I6 is pivotally Y ratus and has particular relation to means arconnected to one endof thefhead I3 ,and to the ranged to be mounted on the table of a rotary lug I5. Opposite the jaw I4' there is an `adjustdrilling machine and engaged with a vertical pipe able jaw I'I which is fixed on the inner end of 5 extending through the table for rotating said the shank I8. The handle II-has a longitudinal 5 pipe from the table in the process of making up bore I9 therethrough from end toend and the `or breaking out a string of pipe. inner end of this bore isy enlarged forming a An object of the invention is to provide a pair socket .204 polygonal in cross-section and into of posts upstanding from the table provided to which the shank ,I8 is itted. The outer end of 10 support a tong in engagement with the pipe to the bore I9 is reduced and internally threaded 10 be rotated, said posts being jointed whereby the and there is a shaft 2| through the bore I9 havtong may be laid down on the table when not in ing a threaded connection with the outer end of use without detaching the saine from the posts. the bore and a swivelling connection with the It is another object of the invention to proshank I8, and the outer end of this shaft has l5 vide, in apparatus of the character described, a the handwheel 22 whereby the shaft may be 15 novel type of tong having oppositely arranged turned. By turning the shaft 2l, the jaw I1 may handles for engagement with the posts and eX- be adjusted outwardly, or inwardly, so as to adbly 001111601566. by means 0f a link and being DI'O- just the tong to pipes of different sizes. `Pivoted vided with jaws, one at least of which is adjustto the other end of the head I3 there is a hand able to take pipes of different sizes, said tong havlever 23 whose outer end has the grip 24.V The ing a novel type of latch whereby it may be secorresponding side of the handley II has the lugs 20 curely engaged with the pipe to be turned. 26 spaced apart therealong. A link 21 has one With the above and other objects in view, the end bifurcated to embrace the handle 23 to which invention has particular relation to certain novel said end of the link is pivoted. The opposite end 25 features of construction, operation, and arrangeof the link has the opening 28 to receive a lug 26. 25 ment of parts, an example of which is given in When the tong is applied to the pipe 3, the free this specification and illustrated in the accomend of the link 21 may be engaged with one of panying drawing wherein: the lugs 26 and the handle 23 then swung around Figure 1 shows a plan view of the tong as supinto position, as indicated by the dotted lines in 30 ported by the posts on the rotary table. Figure 1. When in this position, the pivoted end 30 Figure 2 shows a side elevation thereof, and of the link 21 will have passed the center of the Figure 3 shows a side view of one of the posts. pivot connecting the handle 23 toY the head I3 Referring now more particularly to the drawwhereby the tong will remain in latched posiing wherein like numerals of reference designate tion in engagement with the pipe. When it is the same parts in each of the figures, the numeral desired to release the tong, the handle 23 may be 35 I designates the rotary table which is mounted to moved into the reverse position as shown-in full rotate on the base 2 and which has the usual lines in Figure 1, and the link may then be decenter opening for the passageof the vertical tached from the lug 26 with which it is engaged. pipe 3 therethrough. The rotary table has thev When the tong is engaged with the pipe, Vthe oppositely arranged upstanding backup posts 4, rotary may be turned in the direction indicated 40 4, each being composed of the upper and lower by the arrow in Figure l to turn the section of sections 5, 6, jointed together. The lower ends the pipe with which the tong is engaged to screw of the sections 6 are preferably cylindrical and Y it into the coupling beneath'. While the section are fitted into holes in the upper side of the table engaged by the tong is being turned, the pipe beprovided to receive them. The sections 5, 6, are neath may be held against rotation by any suit- 45 jointed together by the pin 1. On each post able appliance provided for the purpose. there is a bracket 8 having the vertical openings The abutting, or jointed ends of the sections 9, 9a, through which the posts extend. 5, 6, have the abutting shoulders 5a, V6a at one There isa tong having the oppositely arranged side, as shown in Figure 3, whereby they will handles I0, II, the outer ends of said handles hinge in one direction only. 50 extending through horizontal openings, as l2, in When the rotary table is being driven to the the brackets 8. The inner end of the handle I0 right, as indicated by the arrow in Figure 1,Y the is formed with an arcuate head I3 which is propost should be positioned so that the abutting vided with an inside detachable pipe-engaging shoulders 5a, 6a, will be on their rear side, with jaw I4. The inner end of the handle'II is wid-l reference to the direction of rotation, so that 55 said posts will exert a driving iniluence on the tong. If the pipe is to be unscrewed, the position of the tong should be reversed and the posts e 4 should be turned half the Way around for the reasons above stated. When the pipe is completely made up, or broken up, one of the posts may then be turned half the way around so that the joints of the posts will break in the same direction and the upper sections 5 of the posts may then be laid down in the direction indicated Y by the arrow in Figure 3 so as to permlt'the tong to lie on the top of the rotary table out of the Way until the tong is again' needed. Y
For the purpose of permitting this turning movement of one of said posts, the hole 9a is' shown to be round and the corresponding end of the post is also made round to fit throughit. This post is provided with a lateral handle 29 whereby it may be rotated for the purpose stated.
The drawingand description disclose what is4 on the other side, said latch means comprising a connecting member, a lever operable means on one handle connected to the connecting member and a series of lugs on the other handle adapted` to receive the connecting member of said latch means.
2. A tong comprising two( oppositely disposed handles, jaws on the adjacent ends of the handles, a link connecting said ends on one side and a releasable latch means connecting said ends on the other side, said latch-means comprising a. connecting member, a lever pivoted to one of said ends and to which one end of thel connecting member is pivoted and interengaging means whereby the other end of the connecting member may be connected to the other of said handle ends.
3. Apparatus for rotating pipe comprising a tong having oppositely disposed handles, jaws on the adjacent ends of the handles, a link connecting said ends on one side and a releasable latch connecting said ends on theother side, said latch comprisingV a lever pivoted to one of said ends, a connecting member releasably connected tothe other of said ends and pivotally connected to the lever, back up posts in driving relation with the respective handles, each post having a one Way joint.
