l For the purpose of providing a barrier across the lower portion of the doorway to prevent ingress and egress therethrough when the door is opened, a guard Amember 22 is provided,- which in the present construction is a unit in addition 20 to thecomplete door structure. This guard may be in-the form of a light frame 23 constructed of aluminum, providing panels in which suitable netting 2l may be placed. This netting, asvillustrated inV detail in Figure 5 is'held by 'suit- 25 able hooks 25. 'I'he upper edge ofthe barrier member may have a rounded hand rail` portion 26.- As shown in Figure 3 the end bars of the guard rail frame' are extended as shown at 21 and have offset flanges 28 that are slidably en- 30 gaged in the guideways 2|. 'Ihese guideways preferably terminate at the top of the lower guard member is alongside the -inner side of the same. Means are provided for detachably coupling the guard member 22 to the lower leaf I3. 40 This means in the embodiment shown, includes a rock shaft 29 .iournaled in the lower leaf and carrying a plurality of inwardly and upwardly inclinedv latches III which are adapted to detach# ably engage the undersides of inset portions 3| 45 of the guard rail plate `26. An upstanding lever I2 aords convenient'means for operating the rock shaft, and a spring Il, connected tothe rock shaft, urges the same in a direction to proiect the latches inwardly, and therefore into operative relation to engage thevguard member.
' 'It isbelieved'that the operation of the structure can now be made clear. When the door is closed, the latchesv ll,- carried by the lower leaf,
engage under the handlrail or upper 1 end of 55 the guard member 22. If the door is operated in the normal manner', when the lower eaf is elevated, it will carry lthe guard member with it, as indicated in Figure 8, and a continued movement of the door to fully opened position carries the guard member to a point above the door, where it is out of the way and Aoccupies space that is ordinarily unusable. It will thus be seen r `that for normal purposes, the guard moves with the door and in no manner interferes with the latters movement. If, however, it is desired to place an obstruction across the lower part of the doorway to prevent ingress or egress of persons; then the guard member 22 is unlatched fromthe lower leaf by swinging thelever 32 outwardly,.
carrying the latchesl 30 to positions where they will be disengaged from the guard. If now the door is operated, the guard remains across'the lower part of the doorway, while the door moves in its normal'manner to any position between a partly and completely opened situation.
Whenever it is desired to -remove the guard, it is only necessary to lower the door, whereupon lthe latches will automaticallyv re-engagethe guard and thusA connect it to the lower leaf.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will beunderstood that various linut ci! the guard.
