Description

G. O. BURNETT Fire-Kindler.
No. 211,085. Patented Jan. 7, 1879 a m I m M w I Q Z Z Z N'FEIERS, FHOTO'UTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED TA'I'ES Phrnr FFIOE CHARLES C. BURNETT, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
. E Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 211.085, dated January '7, 1879 application filed June 28, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Cinemas 0. BURNETT, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Fire-Kindler; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of the same.
Figure 1 is a top view. Fig. 2 is an end view, and Fig. 3 is a side view.
Like letters of reference refer. to like parts in the .several views.
The nature of this improvement in fire-kindlers relates to the mode of construction and arrangement of the same for securing the several strips of the kindler together by means of pieces forming parts of the pile for the purpose of obtaining a large amount of firesurface, and that all the pieces of the kindler may be exposed to the air to produce a perfect combustion of the material and ignition of the surrounding coal.
By the construction hereinafter described, a draft of air is allowed to pass in and through the kindler, to prevent smothering and to insure combustion.
For a more full and complete description of the construction and arrangement of the said fire-kindler, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, in which the strips or pieces A B, which may be two or more in number, are interposed between the four or more pieces or blocks, 0' D and E F. These six pieces are bound together by means of the two ties G H, Figs. land 2. These ties are clamped together by means of the two clasps I J, in which are cut grooves K L M N near the end of the said clasps. In these grooves are inserted the ends of the two ties, respectively-that is, the ends of the tie G are inserted in the grooves K and M, and the ends of the tie H are inserted in the grooves L N, of the clamps I J, Fig. 2.
For the purpose of clamping the-kindler firmly together, the spaces between the grooves K L and M N are little less than the distance between the pieces 0 D and E F on the outside, sufficiently to admit of the ties G H being pressed tightly upon the outside pieces, 0 D and E F, of the pile when the ties are received in the grooves of the clamp I J. The' ties G H and clamps, being arranged in relation to each other and the inclosed pieces in y the manner described, cause the entire pile or kindler to be held firmly together, sufficiently for all purposes of the invention; and when the article is treated or coated with a resinous or suitable inflammable preparation, it further aids in uniting the several pieces of the pile together. i
It will be observed that the several pieces comprising the kindler are so arranged as to form various openings and spaces, allowing a draftfor the free circulation of air throughout and around the .kindler; and that the clamps I J extend beyond the thickness or body of the inclosed strips, by'which means above another in an angular position, with airspaces between, are bound together with and by means of the straps O H, having their ends heldin the grooves or mortises of the clamps I J, or their equivalents, in such way that straps will press tightly down upon the inclosed strips, and secure all the parts of the kindler together.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A fire-kindler consisting of two or more pieces, A B, interposed between four or more strips, 0 D and E F, secured together with and by means of the straps O H and clamps I J, arranged that the ends of the straps are received and held in grooves or mortises of the clamps, so that the said straps will press tightly on the intermediate pieces, and bind all parts of the kindler into a pile, substantially as and for the purpose described.
CHARLES C. BURNETT.
