My invention relates to a new and useful stove lid and more particularly to the provision of a lifter receiving opening normally closed by a pivoted closure mounted intermediate its ends on fulcrum trunnions produced with the lid proper.
An object of the present invention is to produce an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character comprising only the stove lid and the closure, wherefore the cost of manufacture will be inexpensive although the resultant structure will be highly efiicient.
Another object of the invention is to construct a stove lid with an aperture having a semie1lipa tical portion, a rectangular portion and a restricted or narrow portion communicating with the first mentioned portions, said elliptical portion having an under-cut edge and the rectangular portion being formed with beveled edges which incline or taper downwardly and inward- 1y, said rectangular portion having seats at the bottom, and trunnions projecting from opposite sides of the narrow portion.
A further object of my invention is to provide a closure for the aperture in the lid which comprises a body having beveled edges to fit the rectangular portion of the stovelid aperture and further having shoulders to engage the seats, a weight depending from said body, a neck to rest upon the trunnions, and a head fitting the semielliptical portion of the stove lid aperture and provided with a lip to engage the undercut edge of said semi-elliptical portion.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:--- 7 Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a stove lid constructed in accordance with my invention, the

In carrying out my invention as herein embodied, 1!] represents a stove lid of well known or any preferred construction having an aperture ll formed therein preferably adjacent the edge of the lid and to take the place of the usual socket. This aperture extends completely through the stove lid or the plate wall thereof and includes a semi-elliptical portion 12, a rectangular portion l3 and a narrow or restricted portion I4 communicating with both of the other portions.
The semi-elliptical portion l2 of the aperture has an undercut inner edge and the rectangular portion l3 has beveled edges 16 inclined or 15 tapered inward and downward from the top surface of the lid. At the bottom of the rectangular portion of the aperture are provided seats 11 formed with the side walls of said rectangular portion. On the lower parts of the lugs or projections l8, which produce the restricted portion l2 of the aperture, are formed trunnions or fulcrums 19.
In the aperture 11 is located a closure 20 consisting of a body 21 having beveled edges 22 to fit the rectangular portion of the said aperture 1| and shoulders 23 to engage the seats ll, a neck 24 sufliciently narrow to occupy the restricted portion of the aperture II and thin enough to lie in the space between the upper edges of the fulcrums l9 and the top face of the stove lid, a head 25 of the same shape as the semi-elliptical portion of the aperture which it fits, a lip 26 projecting from the inner end of said head and adapted to project into the undercut edge 15, and a weight 21 depending from the underside of the body 2| and having a slanting or canted rear face. All of the parts of the closure are integrally produced to provide a unitary structure.
The length of the neck of the closure is slightly greater than the thickness of the stove lid top wall and the space between adjacent edges of the fulcrums is at least equal to the thickness of the head of the closure whereby the closure may be up ended as shown in Fig. 6 and turned until the width of the head is in a position longitudinally of the aperture in the lid. The head is then inserted in the aperture until the neck aligns with the top wall of the lid at which time the closure is turned within the semi-elliptical portion of the aperture until the weight 21 overlies the rectangular portion of said aperture. By retaining the closure as far as possible towards the inner end of the aperture or towards the center of the lid the weight will enter the rectangular portion of the aperture and the weight thereof will position the closure as shown in Fig. 1. Ihe body of the closure is then resting upon the seats H and the lip 26 is in engagement with the undercut edge I thereby making the outer face of the closure flush with the top of the stove lid.
Upon placing the toe of a lifter 28 against the top face of the closure head 25 and pressing down, the closure will be tilted on its fulcrums l9 and lifter can be inserted in the semi-elliptical portion of the lid aperture as illustrated in Fig. 2 and when the lifter is withdrawn so as to relieve the pressure from the closure head, the weight 21 will return said closure to its normally closed position as in Fig. 1.
It is essential that the lid and lifter be prevented from wiggling from side to side relative to each other so I have provided a pair of spaced lugs 29 on the inside or bottom face of the lid which form a channel 30 for the reception of the toe of the lifter.
A construction such as set forth herein provides a stove lid having a neat appearance and due to the elimination of the usual pocket-like socket, pieces of coal, dirt or other foreign matter cannot clog the lifter receiving opening does not require tedious efforts to clean it, and liquids or other food materials have no place to collect and stew or fry and pass off undesirable odors. Furtlicr, the top of a stove having all of its lids so constructed can be readily brushed off and the entire surface easily cleaned and blackened.
Due to the necessity of having to upend and turn the closure for entrance into the stove lid aperture and then turn said closure crosswise of said aperture for assembling the closure, it is practically locked in place and for all intents and purposes cannot be accidentally displaced during use. 7
Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exactdetails of construction shown and described herein, as these may be varied within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my'invention, what I claim as new and useful is:
1. A stove lid having an aperture therein including a semi-elliptical portion provided with an undercut inner edge, .a restricted portion and a rectangular portion provided with beveled edges inclined inwardly and downwardly, seats on the sides of said rectangular portion at the bottom, fulcrums projecting towards each other from the side walls of the restricted portion of the aperture at the bottom thereof, lugs depending from'the under face of the lid adjacent the inner end of the aperture and spaced to provide a channel for the reception of the toe of a lifter projected through the semi-elliptical portion of the aperture, and a closure comprising a semi-elliptical head fitting the semi-elliptical portion of the aperture from underneath, a tongue on the forward end of the head to en- 7 gage the undercut edge, a neck fitting the restricted portion of said aperture and of a thickness equal to the distance between the top edges of the fulcrums and the upper face of the lid, a rectangular body having beveled edges to fit the rectangular portion of the aperture from above and'a weight having a slanting rear face depending from the body, the head of said closure being thin enough for passage through the aperture between the fulcrums and the neck being long enough to permit turning of the closure with the head below and the body above the top wall of the lid and the weight being short enough to pass into the rectangular portion of the aperture While the closure is forced as far as possible towards the inner end of the aperture, said closure being pivoted on the fulcrurns and normally maintained in a horizontal position by the weight with the top faces of said closure and lid flush and said closure adapted to be opened by pressure on the head thereof,
2. A stove lid having an aperture in its top wall and including two large open portions with a restricted portion between them, fulcrums projecting from opposite'sides into the lower part of said restricted portion of the aperture, a closure to fit said aperture and swingingly mounted on the fulcrums, said closure including a head and a neck and a body, the head being thin enough for passage through the aperture between the fulcrums and the neck being long enough to permitlturning of the closure with the head below and the body above the top wall of the lid, and a weight as a part of the body depending therefrom.
