Description

March 8, 1938. E SERGENT- 2,110,427
CONTROLLABLE PITCH PROPELLER WRENCH FiJQ-d Oct. 10, 1936 V 'INVENTOR. BY [aye/2e L Serge??? ATTORNEY.
Patented Mar. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Eugene L. Sergcnt, San Diego, Calif.
Application October 10, 1936, Serial No. 105,017
2 Claims.
My invention relates to a wrench for removing the controllable pitch propeller and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a wrench with guide means for directing the wrench properly into engagement with the wrench engaging portion of the propeller;
Second, to provide a guide means of this class which supports the wrench portion in central relation while operating the wrench;
Third, to provide a wrench of this class which is applicable to the conventional controllable pitch propeller;
Fourth, to provide a wrench of this class which is readily applied and readily released; and
Fifth, to provide a wrench of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, eflicient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a partial elevational and sectional view of my wrench shown in operative relation with a fragmentary portion of the conventional controllable pitch propeller wrench receiving portion shown in section; Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of the wrench alone; Fig. 3 is a sectional view from the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a lower end view of the wrench as shown in Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing:
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the reference character A represents the wrench receiving portion of the conventional controllable pitch propeller; B represents the casing for said wrench receiving portion. The wrench receiving portion is provided with a hexagon recess Al, which is adapted to receive the hexagon portion la of the wrench member I. the larger portion of said wrench member I. Spaced back of this hexagon portion la is a reduced threaded portion lb, which is screw threaded into the collar 2, which collar 2 is provided with internal threads 2a and external threads 2b. This collar 2 is also provided with holes 20 for receiving a spanner wrench and setting the collar 2 in position in the bottom of the internally threaded recess Bl in the upper end of the This hexagon portion la is casing B. The wrench member I is provided with another reduced back end portion lc which is provided with a plurality of holes Id which are adapted to receive a rod or pin to facilitate the turning of the wrench member I in the col- 5 lar 2, therefore turning the hexagon portion la which in turn will turn the member A for loosening the propeller and removing the same. The member I is preferably hollow as shown to make it light and practical for operation.
The operation of my controllable pitch propeller wrench is as follows: The casing B when in operating condition is provided with a plug screw threaded in the screw threads 2b in the casing B. This plug is removed and the wrench 5 member I positioned in the casing with the wrench portion la in engagement with the hexagon recess Al Then the collar 2 is screw threaded onto the threads 2a and into the threads 21) so that the sleeve forms a guide for the wrench; 20 then the wrench is turned by using a rod or spanner in the holes Id.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be 5 limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination, and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a controllable pitch propeller wrench, a wrench member having a wrench portion at one 35 end thereof, a reduced externally threaded portion integral therewith, an internally threaded collar adapted to fit the threads of said wrench member, said collar being externally threaded and adapted to fit the threads in the cylinder of 40 the conventional controllable pitch propeller whereby said collar forms a guide and support for the wrench.
2. In a controllable pitch propeller wrench, a wrench member having a wrench portion at one 45 end thereof, a reduced externally threaded portion integral therewith, an internally threaded collar adapted to fit the threads of said wrench member, said collar being externally threaded and adaptedto fit the threads in the cylinder 50 of the conventional controllable pitch propeller whereby said collar forms a guide and support for the wrench, both said collar and wrench member being provided with holes to facilitate turning the same.
