This invention relates to the new and useful im- -provements in bag closures and more particularly to bag closures of the character generally referred to in the trade as wire tie closures.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel bag tie closure of the character set forth which may be of any desired width and is not restricted to the width of any particular tie eleme t employed therein.
l0 Another o ject of the present invention is to provide a bag tie closure device of the character set forth which is of substantially simple, rugged construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. y
l5 These and other objects of the invention, as
well as the features and details of thel construc- 4 tion thereof are set forth hereinafter and shown 'in .the accompanying drawing; in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of la bag tie closure element -made in accordance with the present invention. certain portions of which have been broken away to better illustrate the details of construction thereof.
Figure 2 is a view in section on line 2 2, Fig- 25..ure 1. l
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view in perspective of a bag showing the closure element secured to the upper end of one side thereof.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective su of the bag when closed, showing the tie closure "-10 parallel spaced relation within a covering of paper or other suitablematerial. As shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, a plurality of independent strands of relatively small wire I are arranged in relatively close equally spaced parallel rela- 45 tion corresponding to the spacing of said strands of w'ire I that may be desired in the completed tie closure'and these strands ofwire I are permanently secured together in that relationship by soldering or welding the same at predetermined 50 intervals therealong as indicated at 2.
A sheet of paper or other suitable material I having a coating of suitable adhesive material I applied to one side or face thereof is folded over the several spaced parallel wire strands I in such 55 manner that the adhesive coating 4 on thelatter contacts said wires. The folded over edge portion of said sheet 3 is tucked completely under said wires I' and between the latterand the'adjacent portion of the sheet 3 as indicated at 5 in Figure 2 of the drawing. The adhesive 4 on 5 the sheet 3 permanently secures it about the several parallel wires I and in certain instances will effectively maintain said wires properly spaced within the cover sheet in the event that it is desired to omit soldering or welding thereof. v10
Referring particularly to Figure l of the drawling, the sheet of paper or other suitable material a is of such width that when folded about the spaced wires I as above described a substantial portion thereof projects laterally beyond the l5 covered wire strands I to provide an apron or skirt from which portionsare cut away along lines 6, or otherwise removed, to form a projecting tab portion 'I by means of which the tie cla-f sure may be secured to a bag in the relation'2o shown in Figure 3 through the medium of the adhesive coating 4 thereon. On the otherhand, and referring particularly to Figure 5 of the. drawing. the sheet 3 may be oi.' a width somewhat narrower than thatemployed in the disclosure of Figure 1 so that said sheet may be entirely and completely'folded or wrapped about the several strands of wire I leaving no portion. of the sheet projecting laterally therefrom in the manner of the 4tab I just mentioned. 3'0
The particular feature of the invention resides chiefly in theeconomic benefits derived `and gained therefrom and the fact ,that by merely increasing the number of strands of wire employed, a tie closure of any desired width maybe readily Vproduced without the necessity of carrying in stock or on hand a large number of tie elements of such various dimensions as may be required from time to time to produce.tie closures of various widths, thus enabling a bag manufac- 40 turer to keep on hand a quantity of but a single size strand of wire from which, in accordance with thisv invention, tie closures of any desired width may be produced. The Invention also affords further economic benefits due to a saving in the total weight and quantity'of metal4 employed in the tie closure due to the spacing between the several strands of wire in contrast to the solid, relatively wide strip or ribbon of wire employed almost universally heretofore in the manufacture of tie closures for bags and like con-- tainers.
While a specific embodiment of the present invention has been set forth for vpurposes of description, it is not intended that said invention 55 including a narrow elongated tie element composed of a plurality of strands of wire arranged in closely spaced parallel relation, a tubular covering snugly embracing said tie element throughout its length and including a projecting tab portion, and a coating of adhesive initially carried by said covering for securing the latter and the ,tie element together.
3. An article of the character described comprising a narrow elongated tie element composed of a plurality of strands of wire arranged in closely spaced parallel relation, means securing said strands of wire in said spaced parallel relation, a tubular covering snugly embracing said tie element throughout its length, and means securing said covering vand the tie element together.
4. In an article of the character described, a narrow elongated tie element comprising a plurality of strands ofAwire arranged in closely spaced parallel relation and soldered together at spaced intervals longitudinally thereof for securing said wires in said closely spaced parallel relation.
5. A closure vdevice for bags and other containers comprising a relatively narrow elongated tubular cover member of sheet material, and a narrow elongated tie element in said tubular cover member composed of a plurality of wires secured therein in closely spaced parallel relation and extending longitudinally thereof throughout its length.
6. A closure device for bags and other containers comprising a cover.; member of sheet material including a relatively narrowvelongated tubular portion and a tab portion projecting freely from the latter, and anarrow elongated tie element in said tubular portion bf the cover member composed of a plurality of wires secured therein in closely spaced parallel relation and extending longitudinally throughout lits length.'
7. A closure device for vbags and other containers comprising a relatively narrow elongated tubular cover portion. of sheet material, and a plurality of wires arranged in closely spaced parallel relation longitudinally within said tubular cover portion throughout its length and secured together at longitudinally spaced intervals to form an integral narrow elongated tie element therein 8. A closure device for bags and other containers comprising a cover member of sheet material including a-relatively narrow elongated tubular portion, and a tab portion 'projecting .freely from the latter, and a plurality of wires arranged in closely spaced parallel relation longitudinally within said tubular `cover portion throughout its length and secured together at longitudinally spaced intervals to form an integral narrow elongated tie element therein.
