UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE MOTOR CONTROL SYSTEM Application Maren 25, 1935, serial No. 12,789
6 Claims.
lThis invention relates to motor controlsystems, and more particularly' to systems for controlling motor driven machines such as dyeiisgers. Machines known as dye jiggers are commonly employed for passing cloth-or other material in opposite directions through a bath, such machines being usually provided with a pair of beam rolls either of which is adapted to be driven to wind material thereon as the same is paidkout from the other beam roll. The patentto William J. Norton, No. 1,887,462 of November 8, 1932, discloses a dye jigger of the aforementioned type,
and proposes use of a pair of shunt wound motors for drivingthe beam rolls and connections to effect an automatic speed balancing action between the motors to maintain the linear speed of the material and also the tension thereon substantially uniform during transfer of the material from either beam roll to the other. 'Ihe control system disclosed in said patent also provides for automatic reversal of the motors upon a. selected number of revolutions of one of the beam rolls and for plugging of the motors during reversals.
The system disclosed in the aforementioned patent for controlling the tension and speed of the material undergoing treatment while having some advantageous features has been found open l Yto serious objections. In practice it has been 50 found necessary to provide modified connections for the motors and it has been found that plugging of the motors during reversals is likely to subject the material undergoing treatment to r excessive strains. Also it has been found that reversal of the motors upofn a selected number of revolutions of one of the beam rolls is undesirable since the points at which reversals should occur are likely to vary due to shrinkage or stretching of the material during treatment thereof.
The present invention has among its objects to provide an improved dye jigger control system which overcomes the above noted objections to the system of the aforementioned patent.
Another object is to provide a dye jigger control system having improved means associatedl therewith for eiecting automatic rocking of the beam rolls.
fil
Various other objects and advantages of the modification without departing from the spiritv and scope of the appended claims. Y
In the drawing, Figure 1 diagrammatically i1- lustrates a. control system embodying the inven tion, and 5 Fig. 2 is a schematic view illustrating an operating mechanism for certain of the control switches shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, the same illustrates .a pair of direct current dynamo electric ma- 10 chines M1 and M2 which are coupled respectively to a pair of beam rolls I and 2 for passing material such as cloth through a bath contained in a receptacle 3. The dynamo electric machines M1 and M2 are of similar size and construction, each 15 having an armature A and a shunt field Winding F to be supplied with current from a direct current supply circuit indicated by lines L1-L2.
The field windings F1 and F2 of the dynamo electric machines are connected in parallel across lines Ll--L2 and the armatures A1 and A2v of 20 said machines are connected in series and are controlled by an electroresponsive main switch 4, a pair of electroresponsive reversing switches 5 and 6 and a voltage responsive switch l.
Main switch 4 is provided with normally open contacts 4b for effecting starting and stopping of the equipment, and as hereinafter set forth normally open contacts 5b and 5c associated with reversing switch 5 control connections which provide for operation of machine M1 as a motor and machine M2 as a generator for winding of the material upon beam roll l while normally open contacts 6b and 6 associated with reversing switch 6 control connections which provide for 5' operation of machine M2 as a motor and machine M1 as a generator for winding of the material upon beam roll 2. Also as hereinafter set forth, upon starting of the equipment in either direction, normally open. contacts 'lb associated 40 with switch 'l render the machine which is connected to act as a generator ineffective until the machine which acts as a motor is brought up to a substantially normal speed, and. upon stopping of the equipment normally closed contacts 4C 45 associated with main switch 4 operate to esVA tablish dynamic braking connections for the machine which is operating as a generator.
The speed atwhich the material is transferred from either beam roll to the other and also the tension thereon is controlledby resistances R1 and R2 and an adjustable reheostat RH. For a purpose hereinafter set forth rheostat RH is normally shunted by normally closed contacts lc associated with thevvcltage responsive switch 'l 5`5 and resistance R1 is arranged to be included in the dynamic 'braking connections established by contacts 4 of main switch 4.
'Ihe energizing circuit for main switch 4 is controlled by a pair of normally open start push buttons 9 and I0 and a plurality of normally closed stop push buttons I I. Also main switch 4 is provided with normally open auxiliary contacts 4d which act upon response of said switch to establish a maintaining circuit therefor through the medium of the stop push buttons I I.
The start push buttons 9 and I 0 also provide for control of the reversing switches 5 and 6 through the medium of an electroresponsive relay I2. Relay I2 is provided with a pivoted contact element I3 which is movable in one direction under the action of an operating winding I4 controlled by push button 9 to bridge a pair of stationary contacts I5-I5 and in an opposite direction under the action of an operating winding I6 controlled by push button I 0 to bridge a pair of stationary contacts I1I1. Contacts i5-I5 of switch I2 control the energizing circuit of reversing switch 5 while contacts I1-I1 thereof control the energizing circuit of reversing switch 6. The energizing circuits of reversing switches 5 and 6 are also controlled by normally closed auxiliary contacts 1d associated with the voltage responsive switch 1 and each of said reversing switches is provided with normally open auxiliary contacts d for establishing a maintaining circuit for itself, and normally closed auxiliary contacts e for controlling the energizing circuit of the other reversing switch. Each of the reversing switches 5 and 6 is also provided with ing the operating Winding of the voltage responsive switch 1 in shunt with the armatures A1 ,zero setting of their associated counters.
and A2 of the dynamoelectric machines through the medium of a normally closed switch I9 which is operable as hereinafter set forth by the adjusting arm of rheostat RH.
The reversing switches 5 and 6 are also adapted to be automatically controlled by a pair of counting devices 2l and 22, the former device being driven from beam roll I and the latter from beam roll 2. Said counting devices are of an indicating type capable of being manually adjusted to provide for zero setting thereof, and counting device 2l is provided with a pair of control switches 23 and 24 while counting device 22 is provided vwith a pair of control switches 25 and 26. As shown in Fig. 2, the dials of the counting devices each have a notch a on one side thereof which is located opposite the zero figure thereon and the unit dial has a notch b on the opposite side thereof which is shown-opposite the numeral 4. Each of the switches 23 and 26 has arms c associated there- 4with which are arranged to drop into the notches a in the dials of its associated counter when such dials are in zero indicating position and each of the switches 24 and 25 is provided with an arm d which is arranged to drop into the notch b in the unit dial of its associated counter. The switches 23 and 26 are biased to move to closd position, and as is apparent, the arms c associated with said switches prevent closure thereof except upon The switches 24 and 25 are also -biased to move to closed position and the arm d associated with each of said switches prevents closure thereof except upon movement of the unit dial of its associated counter into a, given indicating position, as for example 4. As hereinafter set forth, the switches 23 and 26 are arranged to be connected in circuit with the operating lwindings of relay I2 by the manually controlled switches 21 and 28 to effect automatic reversal of the dye jigger upon paying out of all of the material upon either of the beam rolls l or 2. Also as hereinafter set forth the switches 24 and 25 are adapted to be connected in circuit with the operating windings of relay I2 by manually controlled switches 29 and 30 to automatically rock the beam rolls upon winding of all of the material upon either of said beam rolls.
The function and operation of the aforedescribed control system and also the circuit connections thereof will now be more fully described.
Depression of either of the start push buttons .9 or I establishes an energizing circuit for main switch 4 extending from line L1 through the stop push buttons II through push button 9 or l0, as the case may be, to conductor 32 and thence through the operating winding 4a of said main switch to line L2. In responding main switch 4 establishes a maintaining circuit for itself extending from line L1 through stop push buttons II to conductor 33 and thence through the auxiliary contacts 41 of said main switch and the operating winding 48L thereof to line L2.
Depression of start push button 9 connects the operating winding I4 of relay I2 across lines L1-L2 through the medium of the stop push buttons II and said relay is then moved into pOsition to establish an energizing circuit for reversing switch extending from line L1 through contacts 1f1 of voltage responsive switch 1, through contacts 6e cf reversing switch 6 to and through the operating winding 5a of reversing switch 5 and through contacts I 5-I5 of relay I2 to line L2. Reversing switch 5 then responds and establishes a maintaining circuit for itself extending from line L1 through its auxiliary contacts 5f1 and through its operating winding to line L2 as already traced. Upon response of main switch 4 and reversing switch 5 the armature A1 of machine M1 is energized by a circuit extending from line L1 through contacts 51l of reversing switch 5, through said armature to conductor 34, through resistances R1 and R2 and through contacts 1c of the voltage responsive switch 1 and contacts 41J of main switch 4 to line L2. Machine M1 then operates as a motor to effect paying out of material from beam roll 2 and winding thereof upon beam roll I.
Depression of start push button I 0 connects the operating winding I6 of relay I2 across lines L1-L1 through the medium of the stop push buttons II and said relay is then moved into position to establish an energizing circuit for reversing switch 6 extending from line L1, through contacts 11 of voltage responsive switch 1, through contacts 5e of reversing switch 5, to and through the operating winding 6a of reversing switch 6 and through contacts I1-I1 of relay I2 to line L1. Reversing switch 6 in responding establishes a maintaining circuit for itself extending from line L1 through its auxiliary contacts 6d and through its operating winding 6a to line L2 as already traced. Upon response of main switch 4 and reversing switch 6 the armature A2 of machine M2 is energized by a circuit extending from line L1, through contacts 6c of reversing switch 6, through said armature to conductor 34, through resistances R1, R2, and through contacts 1c of the voltage responsive switch 1 and contacts 4b of main switch 4 to line L2. The dynamo electric machine M2 then operates as a motor to effect paying out of material from beam roll I and winding thereof upon insure quick acceleration thereof.
beam roll 2.
When either of the reversing switches or 6 responds the contacts f thereof connect the operating winding 1a of voltage responsive switch 1 in shunt with the armatures A1, A2 through the medium of switch I9. Thus when either of the machines M1 or M2 is started as a motor the other machine acts as a .generator to supply winding 1a with current the voltage of which is a function of the speed of the former machine. Upon response of reversing switch 5 machine M1 acts as a motor, as hereinbefore set forth, and when said machine is brought up to a predetermined speed switch 1 responds and armature A2 is then connected across resistances R1, R2 and rheostat RH by contacts 1b of switch 1 and contacts 1ic of reversing switch 5. Machine M2 then operates as a braking generator and to effect tensioning of the material during winding thereof upon beam roll I. Upon response of reversing switch 6 machine'M2 acts as a motor as hereinbefore set forth, andwhen said machine is brought up to a predetermined speed, switch 1 responds and armature A1 is then connected across resistances R1, R2 and rheostat RH by contacts 1b of. switch 'I and contacts 6b of reversing switch 6. v Machine M1 then operates'as a braking generator to effect tensioning of the material during winding thereof upon beam roll 2.
In practice it has been found that when either of the machines M1 or M2 operates as a motor and the other machine as a braking generator an automatic speed balancing action between the machines is obtained which provides for transfer of the material at a substantially uniform speed and a substantially constant tension.
In connection with the foregoing it should be noted that when either of the machines is started as a motor the rheostat RH is shunted by contacts 1c of the voltage responsive switch 1 to However, upon response of switch 1 the contacts 1c open to include rheostat RH in the armature circuits of both machines and said rheostat is then effective to regulate the tension on the material under'- going treatment. As is apparent, movement of the arm 35 of rheostat RH towards the right includes resistance and thus decreases the braking effect of the machine acting as a generator to thereby decrease the tension on the material undergoing treatment, while movement of said arm towards the left has an opposite effect.
It should also be noted in connection with 'the foregoing that when relay I2 is operated to reverse the direction of operation of the equipment the reversing switch which is closed at the time of reversal and also the voltage responsive relay 1 must drop out before an energizing circuit for the other reversing switch can be established. Thus during reversals, the machine associated with the beam roll upon which the material is to be wound is always brought up to a predetermined speed before the machine associated with the other beam roll is brought .into action as a braking generator.
As hereinbefore stated, the auxiliary contacts f of reversing switches 5 and G provide for ener gization of the voltage yresponsive switch 1 through the medium of a normally closed switch I9 associated with the rheostat RH. Switch I9 is adapted to be opened by a cam associated with the adjusting arm 35 of rheostat RH to prevent response of switch 1 vihen said arm is adjusted to include sufficient resistance to prevent oper ation of the machine associated with the unwinding roll as a braking generator. Thus when all of the material is wound upon either of the beam rolls, switch I9 may be opened to render the machine associated with said beam roll ineffective as a braking generator during winding of the material upon the other beam roll.
Depression of either of the stop push buttons I I effects interruption of the aforedescribed maintaining circuit for the operating Winding of main switch 4. Main switch 4 then drops out to interrupt the energizing circuit for the machine which is operating as a motor and the contacts 4 thereof establish a dynamic braking circuit for the machine which is operating as a braking generator. Assuming that the equipment is stopped with a reversing switch 5 in closed position contacts 4c establish a dynamic braking circuit for the machine M2 extending from the left hand terminal of armature A2 through resistance R1, through contacts 4c of `main switch 4 and through contacts 5c of reversing switch 5 to the right hand terminal of armature A2. On the other hand, assuming that the equipment is stopped with reversing switch 6 in closed posiltion contacts 4c establish a dynamic braking circuit for machine M1 extending from the right hand terminal of the armature A1, through reL sistance R1 through contacts 4 and through contacts 61 of reversing switch 6 to the left hand terminal of armature A1. Thus provision is made for effecting stoppingfof the equipment by dynamic braking of the machine associated with the unwinding beamv roll.
As hereinbefore stated., the counting devices 2I and 22 provide for automatic reversal of the equipment uponpaying out of all of the material on either of the beam rolls, and the function and operation of @these devices will now be more fully described.
Assuming that the material is to be transferred to beam roll I from an untreated roll mounted upon beam roll 2. Prior to winding of any of the material upon beam roll I counter 2| is set at zero and the equipment is then set in operation by push button 9 to effect. winding ofthe material upon said beam roll. When all of the material is paid out from beam roll 2 the equipment is stopped by depression '0f one of the stop push buttons II. The operator then sets counter 22 at zero, closes switches 21 and 28 and starts the equipment in a direction to effect winding of the material upon beam roll 2 by depression of start push button Iii.
Upon paying out of all of the material upon beam roll I counter 2i returns to zero and switch 23 closes to establish an energizing circuit for winding I4 of relay I2 extending from line L1 through the stop push buttons Il by conductor through contacts 4d of main switch 4, by com ductor 32, through switch 21, and through switch 23 and the operating winding I4 of relay I2 to line L2. Upon energization of winding I4 relay I2 operates to eect energization of reversing switch 5 and the equipment is thus automatically reversed to effect winding of the material upon beam roll I. Upon paying out of all of the material upon beam roll 2 counter 22 returns to zero and switch 2G closes to establish an energizing circuit for winding I6 of relay I2 extending from line L1 through the stop push buttons II, by conductor 33, through contacts 4d of main switch 4, by conductor 32 through switch 28 and through switch 28 and winding I6 to line L2. Relay i2 then operates to effect energization of reversing switch 6 and the equipment is thus automatically reversed to effect winding of the material upon beam roll 2. The counters 2| and 22 thus provide for automatic reversal of the equipment each time all of the material upon either of the beam rolls is paid out. It should be noted that when the counters are set as hereinbefore described the same will always return to zero upon paying out of all of the material associated with their respective beam rolls, regardless of stretching or shrinkage of the material during treatment thereof. y
It is necessary to provide for rocking of the beam rolls when all of the material is wound upon either of the same to prevent settling of the dye or liquor on the underside of the roll, and as will now be set forth the switches 29 and 30 control this operation. When all of the material on beam roll 2 is paid out and wound upon beam roll i the switch 26 associated with counter 22 operates as hereinbefore set forth to reverse the direction of operation of the equipment to eect rewinding of the material upon beam roll 2. With switch 29 in closed position, switch-25 acts upon a given angular movement of beam roll 2, as for example four revolutions thereof, to establish an energizing circuit for winding H extending from line L1 through the stop push buttons ii, by conductor 33, through contacts d of main switch 4, by conductor 32, through switches 21, 2! and 25, and through the operating winding i4 to line L2. Relay l2 then Operates to energize reversing switch 5 for rewinding of the material upon beam roll l, and upon four revolutions of beam roll 2 the switch 26 again closes to eect reversal of the equipment. When all of the material on beam roll i is paid out and wound upon beam roll 2 the switch 23 operates as hereinbefore described to reverse the direction of operation of the equipment to effect rewinding of the material upon beam roll i. With switch 30 in closed position, switch 24 acts upon a given angular movement of beam roll I, as for example four revolutions thereof, to establish an energizing circuit for winding I6 extending from line L1, through the stop push buttons i l, by conductor 33, through contacts ld of main switch 4, through switches 28, 30 and 2| to and through the operating winding I6 to line L2.
Relay i2 then operates to energize reversing switch B for rewinding of the material upon beam roll 2 and upon four revolutions of beam roll i the switch 2t again closes to eiTect reversal of the equipment. Thus provision is made for rocking either of the beam rolls upon winding of all ci the material thereon, and as is apparent, rocking operations can be discontinued at any time by opening the switch 28 or 3U, as the case may be.
