Description
Feb. 8, 1938. H. C. sHEAsBY 2,107,962
PILLOW Fild March 4, 1956 ATTORNEY Patented Feb. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to pillows and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which is especially adapted for beds to provide a comfortable and adjustable headrest for a person while lying on the stomach with the face down and which will permit the person to breathe freely by having the nose and mouth unobstructed. while the remaining portions of the face are comfortably supported.
With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in certain novel features' of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view illustrating a pillow constructed in accordance with my in- Vention.
Figure 2 is a plan view illustrating the pillow frame.
Figure 3 is a plan view showing the pillow.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional View showing the means of attaching the pillow to the pil- H low frame.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral I indicates a substantially rectangular-shaped frame and has hinged to one end thereof an adjustable frame 2, the latter also being connected to the frame I by adjustable braces or standards 3 each composed of telescopic sections Il, which sections are held in adjusted position by set bolts 5, The standards 3 provide means whereby the frame 2 may be adjusted to Various inclinations with respect to the frame I.
A ring-like member 6 is yieldably supported to the frame 2 by a plurality of radially arranged cushion elements l. The elements 'I may be in the form of coil springs or any other equivalent device. A pillow 8 consisting of a covering 9 and padding Il! is supported by the elements I and the covering 9 is secured to the ring-like member i3 by lacings II. The pillow is formed to provide therein an opening I2 positioned in alignment with the space defined within the ringlike member 6. The opening I2 is shaped to permit a persons mouth and nose to be fully eX- posed or uncovered when the face is resting upon the pillow so that a persons breathing when face down upon the pillow may be free and unobstructed. The pillow being supported by the frame 2 at a desired inclination and spaced from the frame I when resting upon a bed will permit free circulation of air to the persons mouth and nose.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A pillow comprising a supporting frame, a second frame adjustably connected to the rst frame, a plurality of radially arranged resilient elements connected to the second frame, a ringlike member supported by the resilient elements, a pillow having a. nose and mouth opening supported by the resilient elements with the opening aligning with the ring-like member, and means for securing the pillow to the ring-like member.
2. A pillow comprising a supporting frame, a second frame, means for adjustably supporting the second frame in spaced relation to the first frame, a plurality of radially arranged resilient elements having their outer ends connected to the second frame, a ring-like member connected to the inner ends of the resilient elements, a pillow having a nose and mouth opening supported by the resilient elements with the opening aligning with the ring-like member, and means for seeming the pillow to the ring-like member with the opening in the pillow in registry with the ring-like member.
3. A pillow comprising a supporting frame, a second frame adjustably connected to the ilrst frame, a plurality of radially arranged resilient elements connected to the second frame, a ringlike member supported by the resilient elements, a pillow having a nose and mouth opening supported by the resilient elements with the opening aligning with the ring-like member, and lacing securing the pillow to the ring-like member.
4. A pillow comprising a supporting frame adapted to be supported by` a bed mattress, a second frame pivotally connected to thegsupporting frame, means for adjustably supporting the second frame in spaced relation to the rst frame whereby an air space is provided between the two frames' permitting the free circulation of air therethrough, a plurality of radially arranged resilient elements one end of each being connected to the second frame, a ring-like member having the other ends of the resilient elements connected thereto, a pillow supported by the resilient elements and having a nose and mouth opening aligning with the ring-like member and opening into said air space, and lacing securing the pillow to the ring-like member.
