Description

Feb. 8, 1938. R. T. AXE 2,107,774
SASH HOLDER MECHANISM Filed June '4, 1936 Patented Feb. 8, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim. (c1. 292-337) invention relates to sash holders" for sashes,;such as are used buses, railway cars, the,
like- V t-has for itsobject a sash holder mechanism 5 which particularly simple and economical in construction, particularly for sash frame members formed of sheet metal and having front and rear spaced apart walls, one of the principal features of the invention is a construction by 10 which a sashholder can be readily and economically applied to a sash frame of .this type. I
It further has for its object a sash holder which consists of two main units, one a holding member, as a latch bolt and a guide therefor, 15 and the other an operating mechanism and its mounting, the first unit being mountable within the hollow sash frame by an endwise movement of the unit, in a direction lengthwise of one of the hollow sash frame members, as the bottom 20 rail, and the other, a unit which includes an operating member or lever and its mounting being mountable upon the frame member or bottom rail with the operating member or lever movable into operative engagement with the first unit or the holding member or latch bolt thereof, by a movement in a direction at a right angle to the hollow frame.
.The invention consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding partsin all the views.
35 Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a sash equipped with this sash holder.
Figure 2 is an edge view of parts looking to the right in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3, Fig- 4 ure 1. Figure 4 is an inner face View, partly in section, of the sash holder. Sash holders are usually applied to the lower corners of a sash capable of being raised and 45 lowered, and in Figure l is illustrated but one of the lower corners of the sash.
I designates the bottom rail of a sash; 2 one of the stiles; 3 the glass pane; and 4 the contiguous portion of the window frame or sash 50 guide. 5 designates the sill of the window frame. The stiles and rails, particularly the bottom rail on which the sash holder is mounted, are formed hollow or of metal, usually sheet metal with front and rear walls spaced apart. The stiles and 55 rails are here shown as of skeleton formation,
In describing this invention, reference is had the stiles consisting of front and rear walls'8, I, spacing posts 8 between them which rigidly connect them together, these posts being connected to the walls 6, I by a riveting operation.
9' and I II designate the outer and inner walls of the bottom rail, these being connected by similarspacing posts II.
In the illustrated embodiment of this invention, the stiles lap the ends of the bottom rail I, or, in other words, the bottom rail abuts at each 10 end against the inner ends of the stiles, where it is secured to the stiles in any suitable manner, as by welding. Suitable means, as a channel I2 of rubber or similar material, is inserted between the inner margins of the bottom rail I and stile 2 to receive the glass pane 3. Also, suitable weather stripping is located on the edge of each stile within the sash guide 4, and a buffer strip I5 is suitably secured at the lower edge of the bottom rail I for coacting with the sill 5, when the sash is closed.
The sash holder for a hollow sash frame or a sash frame, the members of which have front and rear walls spaced apart, comprises a movable holding member, as a sliding latch bolt 2|, a guide 22 therefor, and operating mechanism for the bolt' ZI. The bolt 2| is here shown as a sliding bolt which moves beyond the edge of the sash or the stile 2 to coact with a rack or openings 23 in the window frame or sash guide. The bolt is formed with a stem 24 for connection to the operating lever.
The guide 22 is in the form of an elongated U-shaped strip of sufficient width to fit between the spaced apart walls 9, III of the bottom rail I, and it is supported by the spacing means or posts of the hollow frame. As each stile 2 overlaps one edge of the bottom rail I, the guide 22 is supported by two of the spacing posts 8 of the stile 2 and by one or more spacing posts II of the bottom rail I. As here shown, the guide 22 is formed at its outer end with hook-shaped shoulders 25 arranged to hook over two of the spacing posts 8; the inner end of the guide 22 resting on one of the spacing posts II of the bottom rail. The stem 24 of the bolt 2I extends through the bottom of the U-shaped strip and is provided with a shoulder 26 at its end, and the spring 21 encircles the stem and thrusts in opposite directions against the bottom of the U-shaped strip and the head of the bolt 2I. Thus, the bolt and guide constitute one unit of a sash holder mechanism, which unit is placeable in position by an endwise movement thereof into the hollow sash frame in a direction lengthwise of the hollow bottom rail I, until the shoulders 25 engage the spacing posts 8.
The operating mechanism comprises a movable member or lever 28 and a mounting therefor mountable upon the outer face of the inner wall I0 of the bottom rail The mounting, here shown, is a suitable base plate 29 having angular marginal flanges or shoulders 38 for abutting against the wall H! to space the base plate 29 away from the wall Ill to provide a working space for the lever 28. The plate 29 is secured to the wall N in any suitable manner, as by screws 3|. The lever 28 is angular in form and pivoted at the end of one of its angular arms at 32 to the plate 2| and having means-as a pin or shoulder.
33 at its angle extending through a slot 34 in the Wall ID of the bottom rail into position to thrust against the shoulder 26 of the stem 24 of the bolt 2|, the handle end of the lever extending outside of the base plate. The base plate is also formed with afinger grip 35 to coact pinch-handle fashion with the handle of the lever 28. The base plate 29 with the lever thereon constitutes a second unit which can be assembled on the bottom rail with the lever 28 in interlocking engagement with the stem of the bolt 2| by a movement in a direction at an angle to the bottom rail and the bolt 2|, or the stem thereof. Obviously, upon depressing of the lever 28, the bolt will be retracted and the sash can be moved along the sash guide, and when the handle is released, the
smear-4 bolt under the "reaction of the spring will be pressed outward into position to pass into one of the openings 23 when it comes into alinement with the openings.
By reason of this sash holder construction consisting of two units, the sash holder is simple, economical in construction and consists of few parts assembled intwo units, which units can be readily applied to a sash.
What I claim is:
A sash holder for a sash having a hollow frame member including front and rear spaced walls with spacers between them, the sash holder comprising a holding member, a guide therefor mountable in the hollow frame member with the holding member movable beyond the edge of the frame, the guide and holding member being placeable as a unit in the frame by an endwise movement of the unit into the frame, the guide having means for coacting with the spacers of the window frame to limit and support it including outwardly extending shoulders for 00-.
acting with the spacers to limit the inwardmovement of the unit into the hollow frame member, and said unit including a spring acting in opposite directions on the holding member to move it into operative position and on the guide to thrust the guide inwardly and hold the same with-said shoulders against the spacers;
