3 Claims. (C1. 226-17) This invention relates to a fringe support for fruit the tub T is removed and a basket inverted use in packing fruit. over the liner L and its content. The basket with 'I'he trade recognizes the fact that in the disthe facing form F is then upended resulting in a tribution of apples, peaches and kindred fruit the properly packed basket of fruit presenting a sales are materially increased and better prices smooth and attractive top or face layer of fruit. 5 can be obtained when the packages are made at- The attractiveness of the package, however, as tractive. The trade also fully appreciates the well as its sale value are materially increased by fact that a highly attractive package is made by employing a fringe strip S and which strip, when the use of a fringe strip but heretofore considerapplied, presents a plurality of flaps I of desired able expense has been involved in providing a configuration which overlie the marginal portion fruit package employing a fringe strip due to the of the top or facing layer of fruit. increased 1abor cost The use of such a fringe strip is well known It is an object of the present invention to probut considerable diiculty has heretofore been envide means whereby a fringe strip can be comcountered in facilitating the desired placement of prised in a fruit package with a substantial elimthis fringe strip so that a fruit package including ination of any additional cost. such a strip may be produced with substantially It is also an object of the invention to provide no increase in the cost of labor. means whereby a fringe strip can be effectively In the embodiment of the invention as herein maintained in required position upon a facing disclosed I provide an annular member M of suitform or the like so that the package can be comable material and in the form of a truncated pleted in accordance with the methods now gencone. The diameter of they member M at its lower erally employed. or larger end is such as to permit the member or A still further object of the invention is to proring M to be snugly engaged around an upstandvide a support for use in connection with a fringe ing Continuous flange 2 COIIIIJISG- in the SruC- strip which operates to effectively maintain the ture of the facing form F whereby the member strip in applied position upon a facing form or or ring M is properly positioned. This member the like and which also operates to prevent lateral or ring M is of relatively short length or of a distortion of the fringe strip. lengthsubstantially equal to the width of the The novel features of my invention will herebody portion of a fringe strip S. As herein disinafter be definitely claimed. closed, the fringe strip S is of a split type and In order that my invention may be the better has the conventional naps I which flex inwardly understood, I will now proceed to describe the fOr CIOS@ Contact With the upper faCe 0f the facing same with reference to the accompanying drawform F when the Strip iS in applied DOSii'fOn- The ing. whereinzextremities of this strip S also overlap and said Figure 1 is a vertical sectiona1 View taken overlapping portions are provided with interlock- 35 through a fringe support constructed in according means, aS at 4, t0 maintain the Same against ance with an embodiment of my invention and separation. in applied position; The upper marginal portion of the member or Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the ring M at predetermined points SDaCCd thereapplication of the conventional tub and liner alOUnd and preferably ai? equi-distantly spaced 40 after the fringe strip has been applied; points is provided with the inwardly disposed and Figure 3 is a view in top plan of the support as downwardly facing hook members 5 under which herein disclosed. the upper marginal portion of the applied fringe As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, F strip S is adapted to be engaged. By this means denotes a facing form of a conventional type the stripSis maintained in effective position upon upon which is adapted to be arranged a facing the faing fOrln F and Said Strip S iS 21150 held layer of apples, peaches or kindred fruit as is against lateral displacement or buckling inwardly well known in the methods of p-acking now genof the facing form whereby the strip S is further erally in use. In the present known methods of maintained in effective DlaCenleni? upon the fOrln packing, this facing form has employed therewith F. In other words, the member or ring M iS S0 50 a liner L within a tub T, said assembled liner L constructed and arranged and 0f Such dimanand tub T being placed upon the facing form F sions that it provides effective means to prevent after the fruit layer has been arranged upon the top edge or marginal portion of an applied the form. Then, after the desired fruit has been fringe strip S from lifting out of the facing form poured within the liner upon the face layer of during the facing operation.
After the face layer of fruit is completed in the facing form F the member or ring M is removed. The fruit comprised in the facing layer upon the form F will coact with the fringe strip S to maintain the same against displacement While the assembled liner L and tub T are applied upon the facing form F and in surrounding relation with respect to the applied fringe strip S. The fruit package is then completed in accordance with the well known methods.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that a fringe support for use in packing fruit constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
1, Means for retaining a fringe strip upon a facing form during a fruit packing operation comprising a supporting member to be mounted upon the facing form exteriorly of the fringe strip and with the fringe strip in close contact therewith, and inwardly disposed and downwardly facing hook members carried by the upper portion of the supporting member to engage over the upper edge of a fringe strip to hold said fringe strip against movement away from the facing form.
2. Means for retaining a fringe strip upon a facing form during a fruit packing operation comprising a supporting member to be mounted upon the facing form exteriorly of the fringe strip and with the fringe strip in close contact therewith, and `inwardly disposed and downwardly facing hook members carried by the upper portion of the supporting member to engage over the upper edge of a fringe strip to hold said fringe strip against movement away from the facing form, said hook members being equi-distantly spaced around the supporting member.
3. Means for retaining a fringe strip upon a facing form comprising a supporting member t be mounted upon a facing form and surrounding the fringe strip, and inwardly disposed and downwardly facing hook members carried by the upper portion of the supporting member to engage over the upper edge of the fringe strip to hold said fringe strip close to the supporting member to permit ready application of a facing layer of fruit upon the facing form and within the field defined by the fringe strip held by the supporting member.
