(01. 292-263) My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in a door check adapted for use in connection with swingable doors and so arranged and constructed that when the door is swung -15. open the invention may operate to lock the door in open position and prevent its inwardly swinging to a closed position. The invention is particularly adaptable for use on barndoors, garages and the like which are subject to sudden'drafts and which may be blown closed at the time tha the door should be in an open position.
It is another object of thepresent invention to provide a door check of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufacture,
durable, light, compact and highly eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a door check of this class having a pair of links arranged to form a toggle constructed and arranged so that whenthe. toggle is broken to one side for retaining the door in open position, it may be easily and quickly broken to the other side for permitting the closing of the door.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a door check of this kind so. constructed. and
. arranged as to permit the door opening vto'a maximum degree.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by a reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which,

In the drawing I have illustrated a portion of a door 9 swingably mounted by the hinge ID to a stationary part I l of the building with which the door is used. The invention comprises a bracket i3 which is attachedto the inner surface of the stationary part II of the building. Swingably connected at one end to the outer end of the bracket I3 is a link I4, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected to a connecting plate I5.
5 An elongated link I 6 is pivotally connected at One end to the plate l5 and at its opposite end pivotally connected to the bracket I! which is mounted on the inner surface of the door 9. 'It will be noted that the link [6 is of considerably greater length than the link I4. The plate I5 is doubled "6 upon itself as at It! so as to overlie the adjacent ends of the links M and I6 and form a channel in which these ends engage and also provide an abutment for preventing the toggle so arranged from springing inwardly past center beyond a 10 certain distance. The doubled-over portion I8 is doubled upon itself and arranged to provide the gripping portion [9 whereby the toggle may be gripped and swung outwardly past center to permit its collapse. 5 15 When the door is swung into open position the toggle will break past center as shown in Fig. 1. The closing of the door will be resisted as further breaking of the toggle past center in the direction in which it is broken is resisted by the engage- Q ment of the links M and 16 by the channel portions l8. In order to close the door, the gripping portion I9 is gripped and pulled outwardly so as to break the toggle past center on the opposite side, and when the door is swung to closed position, the device is in position illustrated in'full lines as shown in Fig. 2.
From the description given it is obvious that the device may be very economically manufactured as all of the parts may be formed from 30 stampings. In Fig. 5 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of the invention inwhich I provide a link I4 having the end 20 bent at a slight angle to the main body of the link. A link is provided which takes the place of the link l6 and 5 comprises the elongated arcuate portion 2| and the shorter straight portion 22 to provide the bend 23. The end of the portion 2| is pivotally connected to the bracket l1 and a connecting plate l5 having the finger grip I9 is also pro- 40 vided. With this type of structure, the door may be swung while at the same time a tight closing of the door becomes possible.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction, I do not wish to limit 45 myself to the precise details of structure shown. but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as may come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I 50 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A door check for preventing undue opening of a door swingably mounted on a stationary Structure comprising: a bracket mounted on said stationary structure; a link pivotally mounted at one of its ends to said bracket; a connecting plate pivotally connected at one of its ends to the opposite end of said link; a second link of greater length than said first link and pivotally connected at one of its ends to the opposite end of said plate; and a bracket fixedly mounted on said door and pivotally connected at the opposite end to said longer link, the pivotal points of said links and plate assuming a straight line position just prior to the authorized limit of opening of the door.
2. A door check for preventing undue opening of a door swingably mounted on a stationary structure comprising: a bracket mounted on said stationary structure; a link pivotallymounted at one of its ends to said bracket; a connecting plate pivotally connected at one of its ends t'o' the opposite end of said link; a second link of greater length than said first link and pivotally connected at one of its ends to the opposite end of said plate; a bracket fixedly mounted on said door and pivotal-1y mounted at the opposite end to said longer link; the pivotal points of said links and plate assuming a straight line position just prior to the authorized limit of opening or" the door; and a gripping member mounted on said plate and projecting. outwardly therefrom.
3. A door check for preventing undue opening of 'a door swi-ngably mounted on a stationary structure comprising: a bracket mounted on said stationary structure; a link pivotally connected at one of its ends to said bracket; a connecting plate, said link being pivotally connected at its opposite end to one end of said connecting plate; a second link. of greater length than said first link'and' pivotally connected at one of its ends to the opposite end of said connecting plate; a doubled-over portion on said connecting plate folded inwardly to overlie the edges of said links and serve as an abutment therefor; a bracket mounted on said door, the opposite end of said second link. being pivotally connected to said bracket; said doubled-over portion of, the connecting plate being angularly turned and doubled upon itself to provide a gripping memher; and the pivotal points of said links and plate assuming a straight line position just prior to the authorized limit of opening of the door.
4. A door check for preventing undue opening of a door swingably mounted on a stationary structure comprising: a bracket mounted on said stationary structure; a link pivotally connected at one of its ends to said bracket; said link being angularly turned intermediate its ends; a connecting' plate, the opposite end of said link being pivotally connected to one end of said connectin'g plate, a second link of greater length than said first link and bent intermediate its ends to" provide an elongated arcuate portion extend- .ingangularly to the rest of the body and pivotally connected at one 'of its ends to said plate; and a bracket mounted on said door and pivotally connected'to the opposite end of said second link, the pivotal points of said links and plate assuming a straight line position just prior to the authorized limit of opening of the door.
5- A door checkifor preventing undue opening of a door swingably mounted on a stationary structure, comprising: "a bracket 'mounted on said stationary structure; a link pivotally connected atone of its ends to said bracket; said link being angularly turned intermediate its ends, a connecting plate, the. opposite end of said link beingpivotal'ly connected to one end of said connecting plate; a second link of greater length than said first link and bentintermediate its ends to provide an elongated 'arcuate portion extending angularly to the rest of the body and pivotally connected at one of its ends to said plate; a bracket mounted on'said door and pivotally connected to the opposite end of said second link, said plate having a doubled under portion overlying the edges of said link at their points. of pivotal connection for providing an abutment therefor, gripping means carried by said plate; and the pivotal points of said links and plate assuming a straight line position just prior to the authorized'limit f opening of the door.
