factured and used by or f or the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon This invention relates to a gun barrel mounting.
In the water-cooled type of machine gun, the barrel is surrounded by a water-jacket and since it has a reciprocating movement relative thereto, it is necessary to provide packings for the movable joints to prevent leakage of the cooling medium.
This invention relates to the front mounting of a gun barrel and its purpose is to provide an arrangement whereby the packing member is confined between the barrel bearing member and a gland which are adjustable relative to the front end cap of the water-jacket so that the packing may be correctly positioned and which are adjustable relative to each other so that the packing may be maintained under the proper compression.
Another object of the inv compactly arranged locking ention is to provide members for holding the bearing and gland in adjusted position.
A further object is to so a rrange the assembly that the movable bearing member may be applied and removed from the front end of the gun. To these and other ends, the invention consists in the construction,
arrangement and combination of elements described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims forming fication.
A practical embodiment a part of this speciof the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, where- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the front portion of a machine gun showing the improved mounting.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view Fig. 1.
on the line 2-2 of Referring to the drawing by characters of reference there is shown the front portion of a machine gun comprising a disposed in barrel 5 which is a jacket 6 adapted to contain a end to establish an inclined ing member sleeve has an offset H ada shoulder 9 and provide an shoulder 9. A bearlll inserted in and threaded to the pted to contact the inner end l2 of reduced diameter for slidably supporting a movable sleeve l3. The sleeve turned end l4 threaded to l3 has a front inthe muzzle of the March 3, 1883, as 3'70 0. G. 757) gun barrel and serving to space the body of the sleeve from the barrel as shown in my prior Patent 2,026,528 of January 7, 1936, for the purpose of enabling the cooling medium to be in direct contact with the frontend of the barrel.
A gland I5 disposed within and threaded to the bearing member It) serves as a support or bearing for the front part of the sleeve l3 and also confines a ring I6 which embraces the sleeve l3 and holds a packing member I! against the 10 forward and inner wall of the offset H of the bearing member ID. The gland extends beyond the front end of the bearing member and is provided with teeth [8 whereby it may be engaged by a tool and rotated. The gland acts through the ring it to place the packing member under proper compression.
The bearing member In is provided with an aperture I9 for receiving the inner end of a hollow set screw which is disposed radially of 20 the end cap 1 and is threaded in a thickened portion thereof. A pin 2| within the hollow set screw 20 is held against the gland l5 by means of a set screw 22 which is also within the hollow set screw 20 and threaded thereto. A nut 23 is threaded on the outer end of the inner set screw 22 and jammed against the outer face of the hollow set screw 20. The set screws maintain the bearing member ill and gland l5 against movement relative to one another and also relative to the end cap. As a result of this arrangement, the packing member I! will always be maintained in the proper position and under the proper compression, and the adjustment need not be changed during the life of the gun barrel.
A ring 24 threaded on the inner end of the fixed sleeve 8 is formed with a flared apron 25 to facilitate introduction of the barrel unit.
I claim.
1. In a machine gun, a jacket for a cooling fluid and having a front end cap, a gun barrel mounted for reciprocation within the jacket, a fixed sleeve on the cap and having an internal shoulder, a bearing member for the barrel threaded in the fixed sleeve and having an offset engaging the internal shoulder of the sleeve, said bearing member having an aperture, a gland threaded in the bearing member and adapted to support the gun barrel, a packing confined between the gland and the offset of the bearing member, a hollow set screw in the end cap and inserted in the aperture of the bearing member, a pin in the hollow set screw, and a set screw in the hollow set screw and holding the pin against the gland. 56
2. In a machine gun, a jacket for a cooling fluid and having a front end cap, a gun barrel mounted for reciprocation within the jacket, a fixed sleeve on the cap, a bearing member for the barrel threaded in the fixed sleeve, said bearing member having an aperture, a gland threaded in the bearing member and adapted to support the gun barrel, a packing confined between the gland and the bearing member, a hollow set screw in the end cap and inserted in the aperture of the bearing member, a pin in the hollow set screw, and a set screw in the hollow set screw and holding the pin against the gland.
3. In a machine gun, a jacket for a cooling fluid and having a front end cap, a gun barrel mounted for reciprocation within the jacket, a.
fixed sleeve on the cap and having an internal shoulder, a bearing member for the barrel threaded'in the fixed sleeve and having an offset engaging the internal shoulder of the sleeve, a gland threaded in the bearing member and adapted to support the gun barrel, a packing confined between the gland and the bearing member, and means carried by the end cap and engaging the bearing member and the gland to lock them against movement relative to one another and relative to the end cap.
4. In a mounting for a reciprocable gun barrel, a fixed sleeve, a bearing member threaded in the sleeve and having a barrel-supporting portion, a barrel supportingrgland within the bearing member and threaded thereto, a packing confined between the gland and bearing member, a hollow set screw in the sleeve and locking the bearing member, and means in the hollow set screw for locking the gland.
5. In a mounting for a reciprocable gun barrel, a fixed sleeve, a bearing member threaded in the .sleeve and having a barrel-supporting portion, a barrel supporting gland within the bearing member and threaded thereto, a packing I confined between the gland and bearing member, and means carried by the sleeve and engaging the bearing member and gland to lock them against movement relative to one another and relative to the sleeve.
