. 11 Claims. This invention relates to a smokers accessory and particularly to improvementsrin ash receptacles.
The invention provides improvements on the structure'of ash receptacles as shown in Parkin-' son-Patent'No. 2,004,537, patented June 11, 1935.
The improvements provided by this invention over the above mentioned patent are directed particularly to the new supporting bracket 1 construction and the guide member associated therewith for providing a more efficient support tor the closure plates, and a'suitable guide and guard thereforto prevent users of the acces sory from damaging the closure mechanism.
This damagingof the closure'mechanism may take place in the normal. use of the accessory for receiving cigarette stubs and the like, when they are being extinguished and placed in the container, or when the cover is detached from the receptacle at which timeit may be handled rather roughly during cleaning. 'This also subjectsthe closure mechanism to possible-injury .and with. the present supporting bracket construction and the cooperation of the guide membertherewith the damaging of the closure plates or other parts ofthe closure mechanism issubstantially avoided. A cover 3 has a normally horizontal peripheral section 4. seated on top of the upper edge of receptacle I. A peripheral flange 5 is formed at the outer periphery. of section 4 and engages over the outer surface of the upper edge of the A depending cylindrical flange 6 is formed at the inner edge of section 4 extending downwardly into the receptacle and terminating at its lower edge in an inwardly and downwardly tapering section I. 'The lower edge of the tapering section i terminates in a discharge opening 8 and a flange portion 9 is formed at the inner edge'of the tapered section 1 to define the discharge opening and form a seat on which the closure plates jlfl may engage and slide.
A pair of bars II arranged inadjacent but spaced parallel relation extend diametrically across cover 3 and have their opposite end portions extending through openings in depending cylindrical section 6. One end of each of the bars terminates at the outer face of the flange'fi. Asshown in .Fig. 2 the end of each of the bars is arranged so that the corresponding end of one bar is at the diametrically opposite side of the cover from the similar end of the other bar. The opposite ends of'these two-bars extend to a point adjacent the inside face of the peripheral flange 5 leaving just sufficient space between the 7 ends of the bars and flange 5 to receive the upper v edge of the side walls of receptacle I. These longer ends of bars H are designated I2 and are provided with tapered upper faces l3 as shown in Fig. 3. When the cover is placed on the receptacle as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 with .ends l2 out of alignment with inclined beads 2 on the receptacle, the closure may be slidably moved intov the position shown in Fig. 3 with section t seated on the upperedge of the receptacle. By turning the cover in a clockwise direction on the receptacle, ends i2 will eventually come in contact with inclined beads 2 on the receptacle so that inclined faces 53 thereof will engage the under'edges of beads 2. As this engagement progresses it will be obvious that. due to the inclined relation of beads 2, a camming 'actionwill take place that will ultimately prevent further rotation of the cover on the receptacle and firmly lock the cover in attached position. In any event the depending bead forming the stop will limit the rotated movement of the cover on the receptacle and thereby insure its being held in locked position.
A supporting bracket I is formed of a single piece of sheet metal according to the preferred structure of this invention, as disclosed in the drawings, so as to provide a pair of attaching legs i5, each having a laterally extending securing foot it on the free end. Securing feet 55 are provided with openings H for receiving rivets l8 extending through openings formed in inclined portion '1 of the cover to secure feet it on the underside thereof as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 4. 1

After the bearing washer 23 is applied to the pivot pin the end may be riveted over to permanently retain the parts in assembled relation with the closure plates mounted for free pivotal movement on cylindria cal section 2i.

This rock member is, handle member 3! and the other features of the movable parts used to actuate closure plates iii are clearly disclosed and'described in the patent mentioned above and further illustration and'des'cription thereof is therefore not essential to a clear understanding of the present invention.
A spring 3:2 is mounted on pivot pin 32 and arranged so that one end will engage handle member 3! while the opposite end engages pivot pin 2?. The tension on this spring is arranged to normally move the parts so that closure plates its will be actuated to the closed position and retained in such position by this spring.
The central section 24 of supporting bracket it between lateralprojection l9 and side flanges is formed with a pair of apertures provided for the attachment of a guide member 35 thereto by having the free ends 36 extending through the apertures in the central section as clearly shownin Fig. '7 and suitably secured to the supporting brackets by soldering or the like. This guide member 35 is illustrated as being formed from a single length of wire arranged so that adjacent to the end sections 35 the wire is formed to provide oppositely extending arcuate sections til intermediate the ends of the guide member and at the opposite end of the guide member the central portion of the wire is provided to form a laterally extending small attaching loop 38. At 39 the wire is formed to have the portions at the opposite ends of loop 38 where it is joined to sections 3? in substantial engagement so that ioop 33 will be closed. Loop 38 extends at the proper angular relation from sections 31 of the guide member to engage the surface of tapered portion i of cover 3 adjacent to flange 9 on the 'side' opposite discharge opening 8 from that at which supporting bracket I4 is located, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4. Solder or other suitable material is used to rigidly anchor loop 38 to inclined section 7 by placing the solder inside of the loop as indicated at 40 in Fig. 6.
When guide member 35 is secured in this manner at its opposite ends to supporting bracket M inclined portion 1 of cover 3 the oppositely extending arcuate guide portions 3'! thereof will be arranged in spaced relation below closure plates ill as clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, and substantially parallel to the closure plates and the lower edge of flange 9. Arcuate sections 3? of guide member 35 are of such a size and curvature that they extend around discharge opening 8 below flange 9 in the manner shown in Figs. 2, 3 and a, in order that passage of waste material from the cover through the discharge opening will not be impeded, while at the same timethe guide sections 37 will be present to have the under faces of cover sections ride thereon if a user of hereceptacle presses downwardly on the upper faces of the plate in using thedevice. 4 Guide or guard member 35 in being arranged as illustrated and described above so asto be secured to the central portion of supporting bracket 83 and to cover 3 at the opposite side of the discharge opening from the supporting bracket, provides a brace member for the supporting bracket so that there are three points of attachm'ent for the supporting bracket to the cover. This provides a very rigid construction that when once assembled holds the supporting bracket rigidly in position. with respect to the discharge opening and thereby effectively mount closure plates it in such a manner that they are eiiiciently supported in the proper position for movement between open and closed positions over dischar e opening 3 in the cover. If the ash receptacle should fall or be jarred or thrown about during its use as these devices occasionally are, there will be no likelihood of injury to the supporting structure' that would throw the plates out of line and interfere with the operation of the closure mechanism. The supporting bracket 14 has central sections '24 andside flanges 25 thereof extended substantially below rock mem ber 28 as clearly shown in Fig. 4, in order to provide'an additional guard for the operating mechanism for the closure plates to prevent injury to the mechanism. It has been found that this extension beyond the lower portionsof the rock member or other parts of the operating mechanism will protect the operating mechanism against injury when the cover is separated from the receptacle for cleaning and the like, and is thrown around. This .is due to the fact that by reason of the marginal flange 5 on the cover and means for said closure plate, and a guide memto open and close the discharge opening to allow discharge of ashes and other refuseinto the receptacle andto maintain a relationship between the parts that is efficient so as to give the closure mechanism a substantial support andprotection vfor normal operation over a substantial period .of time.
The invention claimed is:
1. In a smokers accessory having a receptacle provided with a cover formed With a discharge opening and a closure for said opening in the form of a plate pivoted for movement to open and close said opening upon the actuation of operating means, the combination of a supporting bracket pivotally mounting said plate, and a guide member for said plate connected to said bracket, said bracketand guide member being connected to said cover at spaced points whereby said guide member cooperates with said brack' et to provide a rigid support, guide and guard for said plate.
2. A smokers accessory comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a discharge opening, a supporting bracket mounted on said cover and extending laterally therefrom, a closure plate mounted on said bracket on the under,
side of said cover for edgewise movement to open and close said discharge opening, operating ber underlying said closure plate attached to said bracket and cover at spaced points and cooperating with said bracket to provide a rigid support for said closure plate and for guarding and guiding said plate.
3. A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a depressed central portion formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket mounted on the under side of said cover and depending laterally tacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a therefrom, a closure plate pivoted on said bracket for edgewise movement in opening and closing said discharge opening, and a guide member secured at one end to said bracket, having a pair of curved sections following the marginal portions of said discharge opening below said closure plate and having the opposite end attached to said cover at the side'of said discharge opening opposite to said bracket, saidguide member 00- 4. A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting-bracket having one end attached to said cover and'having the opposite end projecting laterally therefrom, a closure mounting on said bracket spaced from said cover, aclosure plate pivoted on saidclosure mounting for opening and closing said discharge opening, a guide member attached to said bracket and to said cover at the opposite side of said discharge opening from said bracket and cooperating with said bracket for rigidly supporting and guiding said closure plate, and means for actuating said closure plate.
5. A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle having a discharge opening, a closure plate for said discharge opening, a supporting bracket on said cover pivotally mounting said closure plate, a guide member connected to said bracket at one end and to the cover at the opposite end and havinga central closure plate guidingsection, and means car ried by said bracket for actuating the closure plate into open and closed positions.

A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for saidreceptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket mounted on the underside of said cover at one side of said discharge opening, a pair of closure plates pivotally mounted on said supporting bracket for edgewise movement laterally across saiddischarge' opening, a pivoted member on said supporting bracket engaging said plates and operable for moving said plates, a guide member secured at one end to said supporting bracket below said plates, having a guiding section for each plate contiguous to said discharge Opening and having the opposite end secured to said cover, and a' manually operable member guided in said cover for operating said pivoted member to move said closure plates.
'7. A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket mounted on and depending from the under side of said cover at one side of said discharge opening, a
lateral extension on said bracket, a pair of closure plates pivotally mounted on said lateral extension for edgewise movement laterally across said discharge opening, a pivoted member mounted on said supporting bracket intermediate the ends engaging and operable to move said'plates, said supporting bracket having the free end projecting beyond said pivoted member and forming a guard for the parts carried thereby, a guide member having one end attached to an intermediate portion of said supporting bracket below said plates and having guiding sec-' tions-extending around said discharge opening and the opposite end secured to said cover on the opposite side of said discharge opening from said bracket, and means for operating said pivoted member from the opposite side'of said cover.
8.A.smokers accessory, comprising a recepdischarge opening, a supporting bracket secured at one end to said cover at one side of said discharge opening and extending laterally therefrom, a guide member having one end attached to an intermediate portion of said supporting bracket and extending laterally therefrom in spaced parallel relation to said cover, said guide member having an angular extension at the opfor said discharge opening mounted on said supporting bracket having movable closure plates between said guide member and cover, and means for moving said plates operable from the opposite side of said cover.

A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket formed of a piece of sheet metal having a lateral extension at one end secured to said cover, an intermediate lateral extension on said bracket, and side extensions on the free end of said bracket, a guard member secured to an intermediate portion of said bracket at one end, extending in spaced parallel relation to said cover and having the opposite end secured to said cover, and closure mechanism for said discharge opening having closing means movable to close or open said opening mounted on said intermediate lateral extension and projecting between said cover and guard member and actuating means for said closing means mounted on said side extension and operable from the opposite side of said cover. a

A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket depending from said cover at one side of said discharge opening, a pair of plates pivoted on said supporting bracket for edgewise movement to open and close said discharge opening, means for actuating said plates from the opposite side of said cover, and a guard member secured to an intermediate portion of said supporting bracket having a pair of oppositely curved intermediate sections disposed on the opposite side of said plates from said cover and having a loop formed at the opposite end secured to said cover.

A smokers accessory, comprising a receptacle, a cover for said receptacle formed with a discharge opening, a supporting bracket depending from said cover at one side of said discharge opening, a closure mounted on said bracket movable to open and close said discharge opening, means for actuating said closure operable from the opposite side of said cover, and a guard member formed of a piece of wire having a loop formed in the central portion secured to said cover, a pair of oppositely curved sections extending from said loop for guiding and guarding said closure in operation and the ends of said Wire having a connection with said supporting bracket.
