APPARATUS FOR DISCHARGING CONDENSATE FROM DRYING DRUMS Filed Oct. 21, 1936 C ONDE N51? TE WELL Patented Dec. '14, 1937 "UNI-TED STATES APPARATUS FOR 2,102,106 I DISCHARGING compan- PATENT OFFICE- SATE FROM DRYING DRUMS William s. Allen, Warwick, a. r.
Application October 21, 1936, Serial No. 106,813 z Cl'aims. '(oi; 34-4) My invention relates to an apparatus such as described in, the title and particularly to the adapdrum. and as it must be discharged through the journal, which is several feet higher than the low point within the several pounds of pressure are required to elevate the water to that extent. Where low temperature, drying is carried out, the steam'pressure'is frequently less than one pound and is insuflicient to displace the water.
By my method and apparatus, I maintain a constant air pressure within the drum whereby there is maintained at all times a pressure at least equal to that necessary to discharge the condensed steam. The result is accomplished by merely connecting an air pipe through a suitable reduc ing valve to the steam line between the thermostatically controlled steam valve, and the singleiigure of the drawing.
Inhedrawing'a conventional installation is .able for the decribed purpose is shown in\the shown, a slasher cylinder I01 being indicated. steam being supplied thereto from' the main i i I through the pipe l2, extendingthrough the journalof the cylinder. A second pipe I3 is entered through the journal in the usual manner,
itsinner end l4 being 'downturned to terminate A thermostatically controlled steam valve is near the lowest point in the cylinder, its outer end terminating. in acondensate vwell IS. The discharge from the well is through the check'valve l6 and pipe I! to the sewer or elsewhere.
indicated at iii, the controlling bulb for which is mounted in the condensate well, the temperature of the discharged water being, in this case, usedas the regulation medium.
Since the water to be drum. A diagrammatic illustration of. apparatus suit- .1
Air under pressure is supplied through a pipe l9, reducing valve 20, pipe 2! and check valve I 22 to the steam supply pipe I 2, the reducing valve being set to supply a constant pressure of two pounds or more, depending onthe, pressurenecessary to evacua'te the drum. The supply of air does not interfere in any 'way with the mainthermostat, but there is maintained in the drum a predetermined pressure according to the setting of the reducing valve, this being accomplished withoutthe addition of any heat units" to the Of course, the air may be delivered to the drum in some other manner than that shown in the drawing, the illustrated manner being preferred because of its simplicity.
' Throughout the specification I have made reference to the use of the described improve:
ment in drying drumso'r cylinders.- It will be understood, however, that it may be used to advantage in vayous situations not involving the use at a rotating member,'but in which the water of condensation must be raised from a low point to a discharge outlet at a higher point. This should be understood in construing the attached claims. Iclalm:
'1. Apparatus for -disposing of condensate in drying drums comprising the combination with the drum, of asteam supply pipe, a thermostatically controlled valve in said pipefa pipe for delivering air under pressure to said drum, a condensate discharge pipe, and a reducing valve in said air pipe for maintaining a constant predeter- -mined pressure in said drum sumcient to .discharge the condensate therein through said dis- -charge pipe.
2. In combination, a slasher cylinder,- a pipe for delivering steam thereto; a thermostatically controlled 3 valve in said pipe, a pipe connected 'tenance of the required temperature by the to said steam pipe between the steamyalve and'the cylinder, said pipe delivering air under pressure to the steam pipe, acondensate discharge pipe and a reducing valve in said air pipe for maintaining a constant predetermined pressure of air delivered.
