The invention herein disclosed relates to a clip for securing two angularly disposed members together, and it is particularly useful in securing metal furring strips together, although it is not necessarily limited tosuch use.
In the construction of buildings, metal furring stripsV and metal lathing' is commonly used. Usually, in such constructionsthe Vertical furring strip is secured to the horizontal furring strip or other support by means of wires. The wires are bent round the Vertical and horizontal furring strips and twisted to secure the furring strips together. One of the objects of this invention is to provide a clip whichmaybe used for securing the Vertical furring strip in place which clip is comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to handle and eifective in use.
In accordance with the invention I construct a clip from a single piece of sheet metal Vwhich is formed to-partially embrace one of two angularly disposed inembers and which is provided With means for effectively engaging the other of the two angularly disposed members. *In one form, the clip is made by bending a piece of sheet metal to embrace three sides of the angularly disposed member, commonly a channel iron which forms the Vertical furring strip. From the edge of each side of the slot formedrby-bending the sheet metal to embrace one of the members there is formed a laterally extending hook-shaped element which is adapted to extend over the edge of another angle iron and frictionally engage the side of the angle iron. Also extending laterally from the edge of each side and spaced from the aforementioned lateral elements there is a laterally extending fiange or element which is deformable and may be bent to extend transversely to the opposite edge of the angle member over the edge of which the hook-shaped elements extend. In using the clip for securing a Vertical furring strip to a horizontal strip, the slot formed by bendingthe piece of sheet metal receives the i Vertical furring strip and the hook-shaped elements engage the edge of the horizontal furring strip. In this position the deformable elements are bent to extend under the edge of the horizontal member so that the horizontal member is engaged at two opposite edges and the Vertical member is firmly secured thereto.
Such a clip is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:

The clip illustrated in Fig. 5 is constructed from a single piece of sheet metal. The piece of: sheet metal is stamped and bent to 'form a substantially rectangular slot having an endwall l and parallel side walls 2 and 3. At the free edge of the wall 3 there is a laterally disposcd element or fiange 4 which is united to the wall 3 at Vits upper edge but has a substantial portion a which is unconnected to the side 3 by Virtue of cutting out a portion of the metal strip during the stamping operation. A similar flange 5 extends laterally to the wall 2. These elements 'i and 5' form hook-shaped elements adapted to 'frictionally engage the side of an angle member over the edge of Whichthey are placed. At the lower or opposite ends of the sides 2 and 3 there are lateral fianges or elements 6 and 1. 'These elements have inclined wings 6a and 'la for a. purpose which will hereinafter appear.
The clip Vdisclosed in the drawing and described immediately above has particular use in securing horizontal and Vertical furring strips together. The manner in which the clip secures these elements together is illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive. In Fig. 1 the Wall is diagrammatically represented as a plane 8. Along this wall and usually spaced therefrom there is secured a V-shaped angle iron 9 constituting a horizontal furring strip. A channel -iron lt constitutes the Vertical furring strip which is to be secured to the horizontal furring strip. In securing the Vertical furring strip i to the horizontal furring strip, the clip illustrated in Fig. 5
.is placed about the Vertical furring strip at a point just above the horizontal furring strip. i The clip embraces three sides 'of the Vertical furring strip, that is, the Vertical furring strip is received in the slot formed by bending the sheet metal. So positioned; the clip is slipped downwardly sro that the flanges or elements 4 and 5 extend over the edge of one side of the horizontal furring strip 9. These flanges are curved so that they readily extend Vover the edge of the side of the horizontalfurring strip and as the clip is pressed downwardly into place, as shown in Fig. 1; they frictionally engage the inner surface of the side of the furring strip 9. of the furring strip abuts against the edge of the i connecting portion between the flanges ll and 5,
and the sides 2 and 3, the clip is so positioned 'that' if the deformable fianrges 6 and 1 are pressed; manually, in a direction so as to force When the edge these fianges into alignment with the sides 2 and 3, they will extend under the furring strip 9 and engage the lower edge of this furring strip, as illustrated in Fig. 3. In this position, the Vertical furring strip 10 is firmly secured to the horizontal strip 9. The inclined edges of the fianges 6 and 'i provide an adjustment which accommodates furring strips of varying widths and causes the clip to embrace tightly the horizontal furring strip.
In practice, the clip may be made with the sides 2 and 3 splayed, that is, diverging from the web to provide for variations in the size of the Vertical furring strip. With the sides splayed, the depth of the slot is such that the smaller sized Vertical furring strips are firmly clamped against the horizontal furring strip. On larger Vertical furring strips, the sides will assume a less divergence to provide a greater depth of slot and approach a parallel relation as shown in the drawing for the larger sized Vertical furring strips.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that by the invention herein disclosed, there is provided a clip for securing two angularly disposed members together which clip is readily and easily manufactured, is easy to handle and facilitates and lessens the work required to secure two such members together.
It is obvious that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art in the details of the construction illustrated and described above within the principle and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A clip for securing two angularly disposed trough-shaped members together comprising a piece of sheet metal shaped to form an end wall and two side walls, one extending from each edge of the end wall and each side wall having a rigid extension of substantial length extending outwardly of the side wall and bent to form an angle with the plane of the side wall united to the wall adjacent one end and otherwise disconnected from the wall and extending substantially parallel to the axis of the slot formed by the end and side walls, the disconnected portion of the extensions and the edge of the wall forming slots to receive the fiange of a trough-shaped member, and a laterally disposed, readily deformable fiange extending from the free edge of each side at the end opposite to the end to which said extension is connected.
2. A clip for securing two angularly disposed trough-shaped members together comprising a piece of sheet metal shaped to form an end wall and two side walls, one extending from each edge of the end wall, the side walls of the clip being splayed and each side wall having a rigid extension of substantial length extending outwardly of the side wall and bent to form an angle with the plane of the side wall united to the wall adjacent one end and otherwise disconnected from the wall and extending substantially parallel to the axis of the slot formed by the end and side walls, the disconnected portion of the extensions and the edge of the wall forming slots to receive the fiange of a trough-shaped member, and a laterally disposed, readily deformable fiange extending from the free edge of each side at the end opposite to the end-to which said extension is connected.
3. A clip for securing two angularly disposed trough-shaped members together comprising a piece of sheet metal shaped to form an end wall and two side walls, one extending from each edge of the end Wall and each side wall having an extension of substantial length extending outwardly of the side wall and united to the wall adjacent one end and otherwise disconnected from the wall and extending substantially parallel to the axis of the slot formed by the end and side walls, the disconnected portion of the extensions and the edge of the wall forming slots to receive the flange of a trough-shaped member and the side walls' diverging from the end wall whereby the clip may be adjusted to variations in the trough-shaped members.
