for insuring the proper pressure of the rollers on the journals and means to--facilitate the positioning of the journals with relation to the rollin apparatus. The invention consists in the parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafterdescribed and claimed.

The framework of the device illustrated in the drawings comprises two C-shaped members i open at the top. These members have matching ribs 2 on their inner faces which abut against each other and serve to space apart the main portions of said members. Said members are secured together by bolts 3 that pass through holes 'provided therefor in said ribs.
Located between the frame members at each of the lower corners of said frame is a work roller l which is rotatably mounted on a bearing bushing 5 or other bearing on a horizontal pin E provided therefor in said frame members.- The peripheral surfaces of the work rollers are convex longitudinally of the axes thereof. V
At the top of one side of the frame is pivotally mounted a member that is hereinafter called the throat latch T. This member is pivotally mounted on a bolt orpin 8 that.extends through bores provided therefor in said frame members and is on the line 5-5 in held in place by a nut 9 working on the threaded end of said bolt. This throat latch extends across and beyond the open end of the'frame and is provided with a horizontal bore in position to The principal objectof the present in-- register with bores in the top portion of the other side of the frame. The throat latch is locked in position by means of a pin ID that fits accurately in said bores but is easily withdrawable therefrom. 5
The middle portion of the throat latch has an opening ll extending verticallytherethrough and its vertical sides are finished to constitute a slideway for a yoke l2 or bifurcated block. In the downwardly extending arms of this yoke is 10 mounted a pin I3 on which is a. roller bearing or a bushing l4 that serves as a bearing for a work roller- [5. By this arrangement, the yoke, to-

is capable of sliding up and down in the slideway in the throat latch. p v
The throat latch is extended beyond the framework and its projecting portion has a. rod 86 welded, screwed or otherwise securely fastened thereto in asubstantiallyvertical position. On top of the throat latch near one end thereof is a pair of spaced lugs l1, each of which has a horizontal threaded bore extending through it. In each bore is mounted a cap screw l8 whose inner end enters a bore provided therefor in the end portion of a lever IS, the two pins constituting, the pivot or fulcrum of said lever. This lever extends horizontally above the throat latch and has a vertical hole 28 through its end portion of suitable size and in proper position for. the rod 30 it to extend through freely. The rod extends upwardly through said hole and has its end portion screw-threaded and provided with a nut 21 and washer 22. Between the washer and the end portion of the lever is a heavy helical spring 23 thatdsurrounds said rod.
g The middle portion of the lever has an opening 24 extending vertically therethrough into which extends the reduced top portion 25 of the yoke i2. Each side of this vertical extension of the yoke has 40 a threaded socket 26 in which works the inner end of a cap screw 21 that extends through the adjacent side of the'lever.
On one side of the frame is attached a horizontal stem or shank 28 that is adapted to fit in a socket in the tool post of an engine lathe (not shown) of ordinary type wherein the tool post has a feed movement.
The operation of the device. hereinbefore described is as follows: Assuming that the shank 28 is mounted in the tool post of the lathe, its throat latch is swung on its pivot 8 to open the throat,
and the-axle to be rolled is passed through said throat and mounted with its ends centered on the head and tail stocks of the lathe. The throat latch, with its spring 23 slackened, is then swung back into closed'position, with the rollers against the journal of the axle, and locked by means of the locking pin I0. The lathe is then started so as to rotate the axle and feed the rolling device lengthwise thereof. The slack nut 2| on"the end of the spring rod l6 isthen tightened gradually until the spring exerts the desired pressure on the end of the lever. When the longitudinal feed of the rollerscarries them to a predetermined point, the nut 2| is gradually slackened to ease the spring pressure to zero or thereabouts before the lathe is stopped. Then'the locking pin I0 is withdrawn, the throat latch is swung open and the axle removed. The pressure of the throat latch roller (and of the other work rollers) against the axle journal is, of course, greater than the pressure of the spring in the proportion pecially useful in increasingthe fatigue strength ofzrailway car and locomotive axles, it is applicable also to axles and shafts-generally.
What we claim is:
1. An apparatus for cold rolling axle journals and the likewhich comprises a C-shaped frame having a pivoted throat latch across its open top side, longitudinally convex rollers in its lower corners, a lever pivotally mounted on saidthroat latch, a yoke vertically slidable on said throat latch and operativelyconnected to said lever to bemovable therewith, a roller mountedin said yoke in staggered relation to said first mentioned rollers and means for exerting pressure on said lever, said means comprising a threaded rod on the end portionof said throat latch extending ,transversely beyond said leverand having a nut thereon and a helical spring bearing against said nut and said lever, and means for detachably locking said throat latch in position, said locking said lever.

An apparatus for cold rolling axle journals and the like which comprises a C-shaped frame having a pivoted throat latch across its open side, and also having bores adapted to receive a locking pin, means for locking said throat latch in closed position, longitudinally convex rollers in two of the corners of the frame, a like roller slidably mounted on said throat latch in staggered relation to said first mentioned rollers, and means for exerting pressure radially on said slidable roller while the throat latch is locked, the throat locking means comprising a withdrawable locking pin fitting said bores in the frame.

An apparatus for cold rolling axle journals and the like which comprises a c-shaped frame lnwinga pivoted throat latch across its open top sideygith a bifurcated end which has alined bores adaptedto receive a locking pin, means for detachably locking the free end of said latch, said means comprising a withdrawable locking pin fitting said bores in the ends of said frame, longitudinally convex rollers in the corners of said frame, a leverv pivotally mounted on said throat latch, a, yoke vertically slidable on said throat latch and operatively connected to said lever to v be movable therewith, a roller mounted'in said yoke, in staggered relation to said first mentioned rollers and means for exerting pressure on 4.
