This invention is a combination wood-turning tool and circumference gauge, and an object of the invention is to provide a tool of this character through the use of which resort to calipers to measure the circumference of the wood which is being turned is obviated; and the invention together with the objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the tool.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a gauge slide.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a top plan View of the tool.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is an elevational view showing the tang portion of the cutter member, and
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of the nose of the cutter.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof, my tool comprises a handle 5 of wood or other suitable material provided at one end with a longitudinal slot 6 and a substantially cylindrical bore 1. A cutter 8 of suitable shape and dimension is provided with a tang 9 that has its end fitting within the slot 6.
The tang 9 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot which is relatively narrow at one end H and relatively wide at the free end IQ of the tang as at l2. The wide end l2 of the slot accommodates an internally threaded tube l3 fitted within the bore 1 as clearly shown in Figure 5.
A gauge slide I4 in the form of an oblong metal plate has secured to one end thereof as at l a threaded shank l6 that has a working engagement with the tube l3.
Also threadedly engaged with the shank I6 is an adjusting nut I! that is accommodated in a transverse slot 18 provided intermediate the ends of the longitudinal slot, aforementioned, in the tang 9 of cutter 8.
Adjacent the shank equipped end thereof gauge slide I4 is provided with a pair of lateral pins l9 that work in the end ll of the slot in tang 9. Intermediate the pins I9 gauge slide I4 is provided with an opening that receives a bolt 20, which bolt also extends through the end II of the tang slot, and is equipped with a stud 2|.
-At the free end thereof, the cutter 8 is provided with a nose 22 which latter is provided with a cutting edge that preferably consists of high speed tungsten steel. The nose 22 may be, as shown, either integral with the body of the cutter 8 or if found desirable may be bolted or otherwise secured to the body of the cutter 8.
From the above it will be apparent that the free end of the gauge slide I 4 may be adjusted relative to the nose 22 of the cutter 8 by turning the nut l! to cause the slide I4 to move, in the proper direction, longitudinally of the tang 9 of the cutter.
In using the tool the operator holds the tool upon a lathe-rest and applies the cutter nose 22 to the rotating wood or other material. Obviously sliding the gauge slide l4 towards the cutter by manipulation of the nut ll will, incidental to the cutting of the work, correspondingly reduce the distance between the free end of the slide l4 and the nose 22, so that cylindrical billets 01 any diameter within the capacity of the tool may be quickly and accurately turned.
To secure the nut I! against casual rotation the periphery thereof is knurled as at 23 to accommodate the free end of a spring metal dog 22 anchored at one end to the cutter 8.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:-
In a tool of the class described, a cutter member provided at one end with a tang, a handle secured to the tang and cutter member, said cutter member at the end thereof remote from said tang provided with a nose having a cutting edge, said tang having a longitudinal slot, a gauge-slide plate having at one end thereof a threaded shank, said gauge-slide also having extending laterally from one side thereof projections operating in said slot, whereby to constrain said slide to move longitudinally of said tang and relative to said cutter, said tang being also provided with a transverse slot, and a nut threadedly engaged with said shank and arranged in said slot whereby upon turning of said nut said gauge-slide is shifted longitudinally of the cutter for adjusting the distance between the nose of the cutter and the free end of said slide, said handle being also provided with a longitudinal bore, whereby to accommodate the aforementioned shank of said gauge-slide, said nut being also provided with a knurled periphery, and a dog, of resilient material, anchored at one end to said tang and having a free end engaging the knurled periphery of said stud for securing the latter against casual displacement and said gauge-slide in the desired position of adjustment.
JOSEPH ZACKOWITZ.
