UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. SURSA, OF VENICE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY F. WEOHRHEIDE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,062, dated November 19, 1878; application filed October 11, 1878.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs IV. SURSA, of Venice, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Cigar-Press, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a press for cigar-molds that is simpler and more economical in construction and more easily worked than those now in use.
It consists of a bench adapted to receive one set of molds, and provided with means for enabling molds of different sizes to be used, and furnished with a cam-sh aft, with which the required amount of pressure is brought to bear on the molds.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan of my improvement; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same.
Similar letters 'of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the bench on which the molds are set when filled with cigars. It is provided with a hole, a, through which a screw is passed to secure it to the table at which the workman stands. The metal slides B are let into the bench A and secured by set-screws I), passed through slots 1) into the bench. These slides are each provided with an upturned flange, b, at the back, against which the mold is shoved when placed under the press. The purpose of the slides is to furnish an adjustable support for the molds, so that difierent sizes can be used under the samepress.
, To each end of the bench A is fixed an. upright, 0, in which is pivoted eccentrically a shaft, D, forming a cam, which 'is operated by means of a handle, D.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: A mold, 0, having been filled with cigars, the workman throws the face of the cam up by means of the handle, and then thrusts the moldunder it on the bench and back against the upturned portions or flanges b I), as shown in Fig. 3. He then draws the handle back to an upright position, as indicated in the drawings, bringing the face of the cam to bear on the top of the mold with sufiicient force to exert the required pressure upon the cigars.
My press is adapted for but one set of molds,
and thus every workman can have one by him,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improvement in presses for cigar-molds,
the bench A, provided with adjustable slides B B, in connection with the cam-shaft D, provided with the handle D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
