2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in compressor mechanism for compressing the walls of a wound paper bottle body during its formation in a paper bottle making machine and the object of such mechanism is to apply a high radial pressure to all points on the surface of the wound bottle body, immediately it is removed from the winder mechanism, to bring the glued portion into closer contact and therefore supplement the effects of the winding mechanism to assure a positive sealing of the glued edges, and it consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as hereinafter described.
Fig. 1 is an elevation view partly in section,
looking into the paper bottle making machine from the winder end, showing the compressor mechanism and its driving cam at the right; the winder and its operating mechanism, and the first turret, in part, at the left and centre.
Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1, assuming the right side frames removed, showing the turret in full, and the location of the compressor station in relation to the other operating stations of the first turret.
Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section view through the compressor unit when the unit is withdrawn from contact with the mandrel, and is in its normal non-effective position as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a View similar-to Fig. 3 except the compressor unit is assumed to have reciprocated to the left, thereby enveloping the bottle form carried on the mandrel and exerting radial pressure thereon.
Fig. 5 is a View similar to Fig. 4 showing the compressor mechanism in the bottle body releasing position prior to its withdrawal.
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view, taken on line 6-6, Fig. 4. a
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary View showing in plan elevation the slidable mounting between the pressure segment block and the annular inner shell member. The outer fixed shell is assumed removed.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a pressure segment unit removed from its retaining block.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a modified form of the unit illustrated in Fig. 8.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
The compressor unit consists of an outer fixed shell I, the interior of which is concentric with the bottle body and supporting mandrel with 5 which it coacts and which houses the pressure segments and coacting parts. The shell I is formed integral with a base portion 2 provided with laterally extending slide tongues 2 which are adapted to slide in the guide ways 3, formed in the supporting plate 4, and retained therein 5 by the rails 5, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 6. The plate 4 is bolted to the bed plate 6, which is in turn supported on lower side frames 1 and B, and supports upper side frames 9 and I0. (See Fig. l.) 10
A is a revolving turret rotatably mounted in the side frame 9 and provided with four mandrels which are successively positioned at the stations B, C, D, and E at which operations are successively performed on the bottle body F, the wind- 15 ing mechanism G coacting with a mandrel at station E and the compressor mechanism at station C. The bottle body comprises two overlapping blanks X and X the overlapping portions being glued together. 20
A bracket l l is secured to the rear of the shell I and is provided with an integral lug l2, to which is connected an adjustable connecting rod l3 which is in turn connected to a cam rod Id. The cam rod [4 is fulcrumed on a shaft I 5 which is 25 mounted in a bracket l6, secured to the lower side frame 8. The cam rod l4, carries a roller H, which is under the guidance of the groove I8 of the grooved cam 19 and is driven from the power shaft 20. 30
It will be seen from this construction that the rotation of the cam I9, will cause longitudinal reciprocation of the outer shell I and consequently the compressor unit as a whole.
Fixed to the interior conical shaped periphery 35 of the outer shell I, is an inner shell 2i, which is provided with a plurality of slots 22 having undercut longitudinal edges. (See Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and '7.)
A plurality of retaining blocks 23 slidably en- 40 gage the undercut sides of such slots 22. Blocks 23 are secured to the pressure segments 24 by screws 23*. Each pressure segment block 24 has dovetailed and fixed thereto a metallic member 25, to which is fixed a resilient contact 26, pref- 45 erably made of hard rubber. (See Fig. 8.) The interior periphery of the segments 26 when assembled together substantially conform to the configuration or contour of the bottle form as it leaves the winder mechanism, as is clearly shown 50 in Figs. 4 and 6.
A sleeve 21 is freely mounted on a spindle 28 screwed into the bracket II as indicated at ll and is provided with an annular shoulder portion 29 which is adapted to fit into corresponding grooves 39, cut into the end of the pressure segment blocks 24. When the pressure segment blocks 24, are considered as a whole the grooves 39, assume a circular configuration with sufiicient clearance being provided in each groove to allow of the segment units radial contraction.
An expansion spring 3i is provided to exert expansion pressure between the sleeve 21 and the bracket I I, the purpose of which will be later disclosed.
At the rear of the sleeve 21, an upwardly extending portion 3|, is provided and has fixed thereto a strip of hardened metal 32, which prevents excess wear on the portion 3|. The portion 3l and strip 32, are adapted to abut the end of a rod 33, under certain conditions which will appear later. The rod 33, is provided with a pair of rollers 34, which is adapted to roll on the surface of the shell I, after following the cam surface 35, cut in the sides of the bracket ll under the influence of gravity. The rod 33, is pivoted to bracket 35, which is in turn secured to the side frame Ill.
The compressor unit is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 in its normal inefiective position and moves from this position to the left, over the mandrel 31 under the influence of the cam 19. As the compressor unit nears the end of its movement to the left, the end of the mandrel 31, arrests the sleeve 21 and further movement of the compressor unit to the left will force the sleeve 2'? to the right and exert a pull on the pressure segment 24 causing the pressure segments to contract around the bottle body and mandrel and exert pressure thereon and at the same time compressing the spring As this movement is completed the roller 34 rolls to the bottom of the cam surface 35 carrying the end of the rod 33 into engagement with the portion 3! and strip 32.
As the cam 19 rotates the roller l1 will come to the low dwell portion l3 during which period of dwell the whole pressure device is held with the pressure segments imparting a radial pressure to the periphery of the bottle form. This position is illustrated in Figs. 4 and 6.
As the cam l9 rotates from this position and the roller l1 starts to climb the active portion 13 of the groove i8, of the cam IS, the compressor shell I starts to withdraw. However, with reference to Figs. 4 and 5 it will be seen that as the shell 9 withdraws the sleeve 21 will be prevented from any retrograde or corresponding longitudinal movement as the end of the rod 33 is engaged by the strip 32, and consequently the portion 8!. Therefore a direct radial expansion movement is imparted to the pressure segments as blocks 23 connected to such segments slide up the slots 22, the segments being held against the end of the mandrel 31 by pressure of the expansion spring 3l As the shell I is drawn by the cam lever to start its retrograde movement from the position shown in Fig. 4 to the position shown in Fig. 5, the pressure segments are expanded radially with relation to the mandrel 31 to give clearance. The pressure segments will con inue to expand radially until the roller 33, rides up the cam surface 35, thus lifting the end of the rod 33, out of engagement with the portion 32,
and releasing'the sleeve 21, which will snap forward as the pressure on the spring 3! is relieved.
With reference to Figs. 8 and 9. Fig. 8 is the preferred type of unit in which the hard rubber contacts with the surface of the bottle form. Fig. 9 illustrates a modified form of the unit. In this form the thickness of the hard rubber 26 is reduced and the amount of reduction is replaced by a strip of metal 26. This construction will reduce the wear of the units and still offer a resilient pressure segment.
