Description

0. THIEL TACKING STRIP Nov. 23, 1937.
Filed July 6, 1936 Patented Nov. 23, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE racxmo srran' om 'rhiel. Detroit, Mich.
Application July a, 1936. 861111 No. 89,157
a mm. (01. 111-535) This application relates to tacking strips for automobile upholstery and discloses an improved strip or greater density, pliability, hardness, and smoother finish than strips now in use.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view 01' a section of tacking strip;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the strip of Fig. ,1 with the various layers cut away and the paper unwound to show the construction.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that the tacking strip consists of a core in about which is wound a wrapper of paper H which is in turn encased by a thick coating 01' asphalt I2 which is covered by a skin or cover of paper it.
The core ill may be asphalted paper or untreated paper crushed into proper shape and laid straight.
The wrapper H may also be either plain or treated paper, formed into strips and wound spirally about the core. In the particular embodiment of the drawing the strips of the wrapper I! have been crushed from flat thin 12 inch wide strips into narrow crushed strips of approximately one-half inch in width and one-eighth inch in thickness.
Encasing the wound wrapper ii is a coating ii of asphalt approximately one-sixteenth inch thick This is wrapped in a spirally wound paper cover or skin it which may be a single smooth thin wide strip one and one-half inches wide, continuously wound around the interior of the strip, or which may comprise several such strips overlapping each other, with each being continuously wound.
A principal characteristic of the present strip is the presence of the layer of asphalt l2. Its presence helps form the strip components into a unitary and dense mass, and enables the strip to be made more dense than is an all-paper strip,
and permits the use of the skin tight cover or skin H, thus providing a smooth thin skin for the strip, and permits the strip to be bent and twisted withoutunravelling.
Now having described my invention, reference 5 will be had to the claims which follow for a determination of the scope of the monopoly sought.
I claim:
1. In a tacking strip, a core, an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside said core, and an outer skin of thin flat smooth paper ribbon.
2. In a tacking strip, a core, a spirally wound twisted paper wrapper thereon, an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside said wrapper, and an outer skin of thin fiat smooth paper ribbon.
3. In a tacking strip, a core, a spirally wound twisted paper wrapper thereon, and an outer skin of thin fiat smooth paper ribbon wound spirally on the wrapper, there being an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside the wrapper.
4. In a tacking strip, a core, a spirally wound twisted paper wrapper thereon, and an outer skin of thin flat smooth paper ribbon wound spirally on the wrapper, there being an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside the wrapper and inside the skin.
5. In a tacking strip, a core, a spirally wound twisted paper wrapper thereon and an outer skin oi thin fiat smooth paper ribbon wound spirally on the wrapper with the two windings being oppositely wound, there being an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside the wrapper.
6. In a tacking strip, a core, a spirally wound twisted paper wrapper thereon, and an outer skin of thin flat smooth paper ribbon wound spirally on the wrapper with the two windings being oppositely wound, there being an encasing thick coating of asphalt outside the wrapper and inside the skin.
