AIR-COOLED PROTECTOR FOR PERMANENT HAIR WAVING APPARATUS Filed April 23, 1937 INVENTOR. v 6'f/YEA0S0 72mm WWW A TTORNEYS Patented Nov. 9, 1937 UNITEDSTATES AIR-COOLED PROTECTOR FOR PERMANENT HAIR WAVING APPARATUS Generoso Turco, Brooklyn, N. Y. 7
Application April 23, 1937, Serial No. 138,544
2 Claims.
This invention relates to hair waving apparatus and is more particularly directed to an improvement in the protector elements of permanent hair waving apparatus.
Due to the fact that the present day permanent hair waving apparatus cannot preclude the possibility of leakage of steam or hot liquid solutions between the jaws of the protector onto the scalp, painful burns frequently result therefrom, while the heat from the ovens is always a source of discomfort particularly in Warm weather.
The present invention broadly comprehends a protector which is so constructed and arranged as to provide means for receiving and distributing cool air in the region of the contact area of the protector with the scalp so as to cool any steam or hot liquid solution which may leak between the jaws of the protector to avoid burns, while further functioning tocounteract the heat radiated from the oven in order to-render the customer being treated more comfortable during the curling operation.
More particularly the invention resides in a removable pad member provided with an air duct extending therethrough having outlets distributed along the.surface thereof which confronts the pad member of the opposite jaw of the protector with means at one end of said duct for receiving cooled air from a source of supply.
Another object of the invention is to provide an air cooled protector for permanent hair waving apparatus which permits of the use of a thinner protector whereby the curler may be disposed. closer to the scalp in order that the wave produced will lie closer to the head.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a protector element embodying the above features which is not unduly complicated in its construction or mode of use, which does not materially increase the cost of production of the protector elements and which is thoroughly reliable and high ly efficient in its purpose.
With the above recited and other objects in view, the invention is set forth in greater detail in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing which discloses a preferred embodiment thereof and pointed out in the appended claims which cover variations and modifications falling within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view'of a protector element constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improved pad removed from the protector jaw.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross sectional view of a protector element illustrating the jaws in closed applied position with the curler in place.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional View through the intake nipple with the air conductor tube con-.
nected thereto.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates generally a protector element for permanent hair waving apparatus which may be of any of the present approved types and which includes a pair of jaws l and H pivotally connected as at l2 for swinging movement from the opened relation shown in Fig. 1 to the closed position for gripping the strand of hair as shown in Fig. 3, the jaw I0 being provided with the usual -clamp link l3 and cam lever l4 for locking the jaws in closed relation and the jaw l0 and link l3 being provided with upstanding curler supports [5 and is for supporting the curler ll.
Removable pads 18 and I9 are provided which are associated with the jaws Ill and II and the lower portion 2|] of the pad I8 is preferably of hard rubber or an equivalent material provided with a longitudinally extending duct 2| communicating at the end adjacent the hinged connection of the jaws with an intake nipple 22.
A plurality of outlet ports 23 are provided in the lower portion of the pad and extend from the duct 2| through a recessed or rabbeted portion of the face 24 of the pad l8 which confronts the corresponding face of the lower portion of the pad I9. of the opposite jaw. This provides a line of air outlets distributed over the confronting face 24 of the pad so that cool air may be supplied in the region of the contact area of the protector with the scalp S where the hair strand H extends between the jaws from the scalp to the curler ll,v for the purpose of cooling any steam or hot liquid solution which may leak between the jaws while serving to subject the scalp in the region of each protector to cool air currents which render the operation more comfortable by counteracting the heat of the ovens.
In order to provide means for detachably connecting the nipple 22 with the tubes 25 which lead from a source of cool air supply, a couplingZfi is provided on each tube having a normally closed check valve 21 while the nipple is provided with a perforated head 28 which is adapted when the coupling 26 is engaged thereover to unseat the check valve so that the air will automatically flow through the nipple to the duct 2| and thence from the ports 23. The coupling when removed from the head 28 of the coupling will be automatically closed by the seating of the check valve 21 with its seat.
What is claimed is:
1. In a permanent hair waving apparatus, a protector including a pair of jaws for gripping a strand of hair therebetween, a pad member detachably associated with each jaw, one of said pad members having a recessed portion in the face which confronts the other pad member and being provided with a longitudinally extending duct having an inlet at one end for receiving cool air from a source of supply, and having a series of outlet ports leading downwardlyat an angle therefrom and distributed along and opening through the recessed portion of said face to discharge cool air towards the scalp.
2. In a permanent hair waving apparatus, a pad member for the jaw of the protector element having a longitudinally extending air duct provided with a series of outlet ports leading therefrom and distributed along and opening through the face of the pad which confronts with the face of an opposing pad, a conduit leading from a source of cool air supply, an inlet nipple extending outwardly from one end of the air duct of the padmember, interengageablecoupling. means on the nippleand conduit, and normally closed valve means carried by the conduit adapted to be opened when the condit and nipple are in coupled relation.
