IMPROVEMENT IN HAM E-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,866, dated November 12, 1878 applicationfiled October 4, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. COULTER, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Hame-Fastening; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that form of hamefastening consisting of a loop and retaininghook, provided with a position of the parts, when the fastening is being closed or locked, and the'loop is sliding over the shorter arm of the lever toward the projection opposite the pivot of the latter, for drawing the hook through the loop.
It consists in such a construction of the hooked lever as will more securely hold the loop should the fastening become partially undone by accident or otherwise.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a hame provided with a fastening constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2, a detail, showing the hooked lever.

The loop and retainin g-hook both have open eyes or hooks b b, to pass through the eyes a a of the hames, and the hooked lever is attached to the retaininghook by a pivot, c.
The hooked lever is made of peculiar form, being providedwith a projection or shoulder,!d, by means of which the loop is retained in position should theleverD be accidentally knocked down or dropped to a vertical position, as represented in dotted lines, for in that case the loop will readily slide off the hook and lover in the old style of fastenings; but with my improvement-the hooked l'evermay drop to a vertical position, and yet the first strain on the hames will draw the loop back again to its normal position in the retaining-hook, because the shoulder at will hold theloop above the pivot c, preventing its slipping below said pivot, and thus entirely unhooking the loop. When, however, the hames are required to be removed, it is only necessary to move the lever more to the left, so as to cause the loop to slip over the shoulder (I, when the hames can be readily detached. It will be noted that the eye of the hook extends back of the projection (1 toward the median line of the shorter arm of the hook. This is essential to the operation and result above specified, since a mere shoulder or projection at a pointopposite or contiguous to the pivot 0, such as shown in Patent No. 51,926, will not answer the purpose.
In addition to the above-described feature, the hooked lever is bent at an angle of thirty degrees, to facilitate the closingof thefasteni-n g that is to say, when the lever D is inserted through the loop 13, the latter will easily pass upward into the angle of the lever, and is then easily caused to slide along from that point to and past the projection 01 by means of comparatively slight pressure applied to the longer arm of the lever.
What I claim as new is The combination, with loop B and retaining-hook O, of the hooked lever D, bent at the angle specified, and having the projection d and its eye 6 extending back of same toward the median line of the shorter arm, all as shown and described, to operate as set forth.
