DI SPENSING RECEPTACLE Filed Dec. 12, 1955 Patented Nov. 9, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DISPENSING RECEPTACLE ington, D. 0.
Application December 12, 1933, Serial No. 702,083
35 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in dispensing receptacles for use in dispensing liquids from sealed cans and more particularly to a novel dispensing device for use in pouring lubricating oil from a sealed can.
Heretofore dispensing receptacles have been provided with means for puncturing the bottom of the can as it is inserted in the receptacle so that the contents of the can will drain into the receptacle and may be dispensed through the spout of the latter. Such devices have at least two major objections. First, an unscrupulous person with the uge of simple tools can make a perfect can out 01' tw punctured ones, and second, bottom puncturing means only does not permit air to enter the receptacle with sufficient speed to allow oil to be rapidly dispensed from a sealed can.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a dispensing receptacle having a punting spout or nozzle, with means for cutting the side wall, as well as the bottom of the can, when the can is inserted in the receptacle. Consequently a hole will be formed in the side wall or body of the can and the can can no longer be reused by an unscrupulous person, and at the same time the hole in the side of the can will provide an effective air vent so that the can may be readily emptied.
With the foregoing and other objects in view,
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation partly broken away of one form of a dispensing receptacle provided with an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l of another type of dispensing receptacle provided with another form of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the structure shown in Fig. 3.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, 5 designates the tubular wall of a known type of dispensing receptacle having a bottom i, a spout I and a handle 8, as well as an upstanding knife 9. This knife, as is usual, is-
rigidly mounted in the receptacle and extends upwardly from the bottom thereof, and when a sealed can of oil or the like is introduced into the receptacle, the knife will puncture the bottom of the can so that the contents thereof can flow into the receptacle and be dispensed through the spout 1 thereof.
In accordance with the invention, various means may be applied to the receptacle for automatically cutting the side wall of the can as it is forced into the receptacle. For example, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the wall of the receptacle may be provided with a vertical channel l having its mouth opening internally. A bow spring II has its lower end I! secured to the channel by any suitable means, such as rivets l3 and the upper end of the bow spring carries a knife or blade H. A retaining bar i can be arranged across the mouth of the channel near its upper end to confine the blade and prevent it from accidentally moving into the body of the receptacle.
The operation of the device will probably be obvious from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawing but by way of explanation, it may be stated that when a can is introduced into the receptacle, the wall of the can will contact with the spring and tend to straighten the latter as the can moves downwardly to be punctured by the blade 9. This straightening out of the spring causes the knife l4 to be prolasted from the channel into the receptacle, as indicated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 3, with the result that the upper end of the knife will penetrate the side wall of the can and rip said wall as the can is forced downwardly and into engagement with the bottom puncturing blade 9. Therefore, the wall of the can as well as the bottom of the same will be mutilated, and the oil will not only flow more freely from the canthan has been the case in the past, but an unscrupulous dealer will be prevented from using the body of the can for the purpose of dispensing an inferior oil as a superior one.
In the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, the receptacle has a substantially V-shaped upstanding knife 20 which is rigidly secured to the interior of the wall of the receptacle as shown at 2 I, for the purpose of puncturing the bottom of a sealed can 22 as the latter is introduced into the receptacle. In this embodiment, the wall puncturing knife is in the form of a bell crank lever which is pivotally mounted at 23 within the receptacle. This lever comprises a knife arm 24 and an actuating arm 25 and the lever is normally held in an uppermost position by a spring 26 which has one of its ends 21 engaging an edge of the arm 25 and its other end anchored to the bracket 28 on which the bell crank is pivoted.
A gauge member 29 is fixed to the upper edge portion of the receptacle to guide the operator in inserting the can so as to assure proper puncturing thereof.
In use, if it is assumed that the bell crank lever is in the full-line position, it may be seen that when the can 22 is introduced for the purpose of puncturing the bottom thereof by means of the blade 20, as soon as said bottom strikes the arm, 25 of the bell crank lever, the latter will be swung in a counter-clockwise direction and the blade 24 will be caused to puncture the side wall of the can. Obviously, as the can moves downwardly past the blade 24, the latter will rip the side wall of the can until the can comes to rest on the stop shoulder 30 of the blade 20.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction, operation and advantages of the improveddispensing receptacles may be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and while I have disclosed what I now consider to be some preferred embodiments of the invention, it is evident that changes may be made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
