This invention relates to pulling dies for hats. a flat top surface I8 provided on the base I 0.
In machines of this character, there is usually provided a stand or base on which a form is mounted to receive a hat. This form, which constitutes the die, is utilized in stretching or shaping hats and pressing the same.
One form of the invention is shown as embodied in a device of this character having a stand on which there is removably and adjustably mounted a hollow crown form.
One `feature of the invention comprises the embodiment, in a structure of the class described, of means whereby the hat form may be raised from the stand and a ring inserted between the 15= form and the stand for the purposes of increasing the height of the crown part of the hat.
'I'he invention further comprises certain novel features of construction whereby the hat crown form is readily raised or clamped in position, as desired.
Other features and advantagesof the invention will appear more clearly from the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein a preferred form of the invention is shown.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of a device embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan sectional View on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional View on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing a spacing ring interposed between the hat crown form and the stand;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of a part of the mechanism shown in Figs. 3 and 4, illustrating a changed position; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 6--6 of Fig. 4.
Referring now ito the drawings, the invention is shown as embodied in a device oi the character described which comprises a stand or base I0.
'I'he base I0 has a plurality of legs II which are f formed as an integral part of the base I0. This base also has an outwardly ared annular surface I2 at its top which is adapted to receive the brim of a hat when the hat is drawn down upon a crown form I3 that is supported by the base I0. The base IIJ and the form I3 may desirably be made of metal castings and are polished to give a smooth exterior surface.
The form I3 is positioned on the top of the base I0 by means of a plurality of locating proections I4, I5, I6, and I'I which are formed upon The form I3 has a series of recesses adapted to receive the projections I4, I5, I6, and I1 to insure proper positioning between the parts.
Means are provided for clamping the form I3 down in position upon the top surface I8 of the base ID. This means comprises a depending bar I9 which is swivelled in the hollow interior of the form I3 by means of a bearing member 20 secured to the form by screws 2I. The bar I9 has a rounded head 22 which is held by the bearing member 20. The bar I9 also has ratchet teeth 23 thereon which are adapted to engage with a tooth 24 on a pawl member 25. The pawl member 25 is supported by means of a pivot pin 26 which is passed through a pair of ears 2'! and 28 that project upwardly from a pair of supporting brackets 29 and 30 that are formed integral with the base III. The pawl member 25 is bifurcated to provide a pair of arms 3I` and 32 which arms embrace the bar I9 and which carry a roller 33 adapted tobear against the back side of the bar I9 so as to urge the ratchet teeth 23 against the tooth 24. The roller is mounted upon a pin 34 similar to pin 26. Cotter pins 35 are used to secure the pins 26 and 34 in position.
The pawl 25 is actuated by a mechanism which comprises a link 36 that is bifurcated at its upper end and secured to the pawl 25 by means of a pin 3l which is secured in place by a cotter pin 38. The link 36 is provided with a plurality oi openings 39 whereby it may be adjustably connected to one end 40 of an adjusting lever 4I. The lever 4I is secured to the base I0 by means of a pair of lugs 42 that are cast thereon and a pin 43 as will be readily understood. The actuating lever 4I has a handle portion 44 projecting out from the base I0. This portion is adapted to engage a set screw 45 that is screw threaded into a lug 46 that extends horizontally from the base I0.
It is believed to be evident from an inspection of Fig. 2, 3 and 5 that lifting up of the handle portion 44 of the lever 4I will move the tooth 24 of the pawl 25 up along the teeth 23 of the bar I9, and that, by moving the handle portion 44 of the lever 4I down, as for example by operating the set screw 45, the tooth 24 may be caused to draw the bar I9 downwardly so as to clamp the crown form I3 tightly in position on top of the base I0.
In order to raise the form I3 higher when it is desired to increase the height of the hat crown, the form is loosened by releasing the set screw 45 so that the handle 44 can be raised to release the tooth 24 in the manner shown in Fig. 5. The entire form I3 and its bar i9 can then be freely removed from the base I0. The crown height is built up by placing on the base I a ring 41 which is recessed on its lower surface to receive the guide projections I4, I5, I6, and I1 in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 6. On its upper surface, this ring is provided with corresponding projections such as 48 that are Vertically aligned with the recess that receive the projections I4, I5, I6, and I1. The form I3 is set in place upon the ring 41, and the entiref assembly is clamped together by manipulation of the pawl 25 as will be readily understood. Any desired number of the rings 41 of different thickness may be used. If it is desirable, more than one ring 41 may be interposed between the crown form I3 and the base I0.
