1 Claim.
My invention relates to a chute device for ash, garbage, and dust bins with a tipping platform within the closure top member. The tipping platform is provided with holder means for the receptacle to be emptied and fitted with fulcrums in its longitudinal axis. Said platform abuts tightly in its closure position against a frame arranged inside the closure top member.
A further object of the invention is to provide a closure for a receptacle in which the closing means is oscillatable and is of such a nature that it may support an ash can to be dumped, the said oscillatable closure being movable from a substantially horizontal to a substantially vertical position for dumping the ash can so that the contents thereof enters the receptacle, and the arrangements of parts is such that the oscillatable member is counter-balanced by reason of the fact that its outer end is heavier than its inner end and its outer end is supported so that it is arrested and held by gravity in said approximately horizontal position where it is effective to guard the passage from the receptacle to the atmosphere.
A further advantage of the object of my invention is seen therein, that the tipping platform is provided on its rear side with U-shaped holding means engaging the receptacle so that the tipping platform being loaded for instance with an ash pan is turned in horizontal position and is returned in its original position after the emptying of the ash pan has been effected.
In the annexed drawing my invention is shown by way of example, in which 05 Figure 1 is a front view of a chute device placed upon a dust bin,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the chute device with the tipping platform in closure position,
0 Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the chute device with a horizontally turned tipping platform for depositing the receptacle to be emptied, for instance, an ash pan.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the tipping 45 platform with the device holding the ash pan.
An ash, garbage or dust bin I has a cover 2 and a top member 3 which acts as a closure. The latter consists of two side walls 4 and 5 with rearwardly curved edges, to which is attached a hood light curved wall 6, which is shown as being connected to the cover 2, and in front the plates are connected by an up-standing wall I, which likewise is connected to the cover.
The closure top member 3 is tapered toward 55 the cover and is substantially funnel shaped, and
Serial No. 77,381
the funnel is provided with an opening 8, corresponding to the neck of the closure top member 3. The rear wall is curved fromsubstantially the topmost point of the closure top member toward the rear, and the front wall 1 begins substantially 5 at about one-half the height of the closure top member, and a mouth shaped opening for depositing the refuse is formed.
In both the lateral walls 4 and 5, a tipping platform I0 is turned byrmeans of a pin H or 10 the like, and in the embodiment of the invention, the platform is shown as rectangular. The platform conforms in size to the inner dimensions of the closure top member, and when the platform is turned, the edges [2 and I3 of said platform lying 15 parallel to the pins II, and especially the edge l3, describes an are substantially concentric with the curvature of the rear wall 6.
Within the closure top member, a frame I5 is obliquely positioned, and the said'frame is en- 20 gaged by the platform when dumping to'form a substantially dust-proof joint therewith. The platform l0 may have a greater length from the pin I I to the edge IE, or that portion of the platform from the pin II to the edge l2 may be heavier in order that it will hold the platform in closed position in engagement with the frame.
When the platform It], as in Fig. 2, lies horizontally, that is, when the closure top member is in position for the introduction of the ash pan I4, the platform rests near the edge 12 on top of the rim or edge of the oblique wall 1, and in this position it remains, owing to the existing weight or length of that end of the platform.
Instead of the frame IS, a ledge projecting inwardly may be inserted in the lateral walls 4 and 5, against which the platform abuts in closure position, or a dust-proof joint with the platform may be obtained by affixing rubber, felt, or the like, to the frame 15 or to the platform edges. 40
In order to hold the ash pan on the platform, a U-shaped front holding member, and an arcshaped rear holding member l6, are arranged, and they are preferably formed by bending wire to the desired configuration. In lieu of said wire holders, other holding means may be provided, and the hand lever I! may be connected with either one of the pins l l, in order to facilitate j the turning of the platform.
On the upper edge of the wall -1, a second cover is pivotally mounted, and it is. provided with lateral parts, and is downwardly curved. It may be moved toward the upper rim of the rear wall 6 to form a closure for the top member, or it can be moved outwardly to a horizontal position to form a receptacle into which refuse may be deposited, and when the said cover is moved to closed position, it will serve to dump its contents into the receptacle.
The holding members H5 at the front and the rear of the platform, operate to hold the ash pan M in place. The U-shaped holding member l6 holds the pan loosely in place, and when the platform is oscillated under the influence of the handle I1, the movement of the ash pan which is allowed between the platform and the holding member, serves to jar the pan, and this aids in dislodging the ashes from the pan.
What I claim is:
A chute device for bins comprising a closure top member, a tipping platform journaled within said closure top member, a frame inserted obliquely within said closure top member, and. means adapted to hold a receptacle on said tipping platform While the said platform is oscillated, said means comprising U-shaped restraining members near opposite edges of the platform and projecting thereabove, the said members being operative to engage the receptacle to be emptied when on said platform.
