8 Claims. (01. 280-220) This invention relates to a stilt and has for its object to provide such a device which is provided with a wheeled carriage element and rider operated propelling means.
With the foregoing and other and more limited objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the appended claims.

The movable parts of the carriage element I! are carried on a plate l3. A front wheel M is suitably mounted for rotation on a hub carrled by the lower forward corner of the plate l3. The rear wheel or traction element 15 is carried by a shaft l5 journaled in a suitable bearing I! I3. Mounted for rotation on the shaft i6 is a drum it having flanges l9 and 20 providing a channel within which a flexible element 2! is adapted to be wound. The drum is'provided with a cylindrical flange 22 forming one element of an ordinary overrunning clutch, the other element of which is formed by the end of the shaft l6 and rollers 23 interposed therebetween and held in position by a keeper 24. A spring 25 is interposed between the element I1 and the drum l3 for returning the drum to original position after it has been rotated by the unwinding of the flexible element 2|.
The stilt or hand piece I0 is provided adjacent the lower end with a slot 26, the surface of which may be reinforced by a plate 2'! having a corresponding slot. This slot receives headed members 28 adapted to work in said slot. The headed members may be provided with washers 29 for engagement with the edges of the slot to reduce friction. Mounted on the stilt element it is a bracket element 30 carried by suitable brackets 3i and held in position by braces 32. The foot piece may be provided with a toe strap 33 for enabling vertically movable parts to be elevated by the rider. Attached to the lower end of the stilt element i0 is one end of the flexible element 2! which passes over an idler pulley 3 carried by the plate H. The flexible element passes downwardly and is wound, about the drum 5%. The element Iii may be provided with a laterally extending handle 35 which may be adjustable by means of a series of openings 36 in the handle It will be clear that when the stilt element It! and foot piece [2 are reciprocated vertically, thefiexible element will alternately wind and unwind, imparting vertical motion to the traction element l5 as the stilt piece goes downwardly and rewinding as the stilt piece moves upwardly.
In Fig. 4, I have shown a modified form in which th stilt or hand piece Ill is fixed with respect to the plate H while the foot piece 22 is provided with an element 3l partially embracing the element 10 and slidable upwardly and downwardly thereon. A bent-over portion 32" of the element 31 is received in a rabbet formed in the corners of the element l9 adjacent the element I3. Attached to the lower surface of the element 31 is the end of the flexible element 2! which passes over the idler pulley 34 and to the drum IS in the same manner as described in connection with the preferred embodiment.
While I hav shown and described the present preferred embodiment of my invention, I wish it understood that I am not limited to the details but only in accordance with the appended claims and the prior art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A rider propelled stilt comprising in combination, a carriage element, a stilt element including a standard adapted to be grasped by the hand of the rider and a footpiece, said stilt element being vertically, slidably connected to said carriage element, and means operated by vertical reciprocation of said stilt element with respect to said carriage element for propelling said carriage element.
2. A rider propelled stilt comprising in combination, a carriage element, a stilt element including a standard adapted to be grasped by the hand of the rider and a footpiece, said stilt element being vertically, slidably connected to said carriage element, and means operated by vertical reciprocation of said stilt element with respect to said carriage element for propelling said carriage element, said carriage element including at .least one wheel, an idler pulley above the hub piece mounted for vertical reciprocation with respect to said carriage element, and means operated'bysuch vertical reciprocation for propelling said carriage, said carriage element including at least one wheel, an idler pulley above the hub thereof, a clutch associated with said hub, a flexible element passing over said idler pulley and.
means for causing said flexible element to drive said wheel through said clutch.

A rider propelled stilt comprising in combination, a carriage element, a stilt element including a standard adapted tobe grasped by the hand of the rider and a foot-piece, said stilt element being vertically, slidably connected to said carriage element, and means operated by vertical" reciprocation of said stilt element with respect to said carriage element for propelling said carriage element, said carriage element including a plate, wheels carried thereby one in front of the other, onerof said wheels being a traction wheel, an
, idler pulley carried by said plate above the hub of said traction wheel, a clutch associated with the hub of said traction wheel, a flexible element passing over said idler pulley and means for causingsaid flexible element to drive saidswheel through said clutch.
5. A rider propelled stilt comprising in combination, a carriage element, a standard adapted to be grasped by the hand of the rider for maintaining said carriage in upright position,a footpiece mounted for vertical reciprocation with re-' spect to said carriage element, and means operated by'such vertical reciprocation forpropelling said carriage, said carriage element including a plate, wheels carried thereby one in front of the other, one of said wheels being a traction wheel,
