LUCK PROCESS OF AND MACHINE FOR MAKING BOOK MATCHES Filed June 29, 1936 INVE T ATTORNEYS Patented 1 Sept. 521, 1937 "PATENT oFF-lcs PROCESS GRAND MACHINE FOBMAKIN BOOK MATCHES IJiick, Pullma Stuttgart, Germany, assignor to tch Incorporated, New York, N. Y., a corporation of Delaware Application June 29, 1936, Serial No. 87,821
In Germany September 21, 193i 11 Claims.
The invention relates to the manufacture of book matches, that is to say small packets consisting of doubled sheets of cardboard or the. like, with corrugated strips attached to their inside faces and matches in the pockets formed by the corrugations. Generally there are coatings of frictional ignition coating inside the pockets, so that the matches are ignited by the act of withdrawing them.
The usual method of making such book matches consists in first Joining to each other a long cover strip and a long composite strip holding the matches, and then cutting the united strips transversely into sections of such length as is required to produce-the separate books, the sections being then folded.
According to my invention the composite stripholding the matches is divided into sections before the transverse cutting of the united strips,
o and the sections of match strip are joined to 5 the cover strip with gaps between them,- the sub- 1 sequent folding being performed in these gaps, so.
which comprises the matches forv one side'of a.
book, but a more simple method consists in arranging that each match strip section comprises enough matches for two sides of a book, but that this group of matches is cut in half by the final cutting operation, one half belonging to one book, and the other half to another book. An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front viewof the machine, with omissionzof parts not essential to understanding the invention,
Fig. 2 a side view, an
4o Fig. 3 a planview of a detail of the machine.
A driving shaft l having a drum lflxed thereto is mounted in a frame 3. The shaft also has axle 8 has fixed thereto a gear wheel Ill adapted to mesh with the gear wheel 4. ,A nose ii pro-,
jecting'from the arm 1 rests on the disk Ii, and
in the course of rotationof the disk the tappets 5 lift the arm so that at intervals the wheel I0 is disengaged from the wheel}. On a tail of the arm I there is a screw i2 engaging a slide is carrying a plurality of knives H on a wheel Ii,
N the purpose of the screw being to adjust the 'knives in relation to the drum 9. The wheel I! flat portions b of some width between the groups.
The roller il applies glue 'to the exposed side of the strip a. I
A cover strip i8 of cardboard is fed to the drum 2 and meets the glue coated face of the strip i6 15 in the gap between the two drumathe drums applying light pressure suilicient to unite the two strips.
Before the strip I6 is united with the strip 18 it is cut into sections d (Fig. 3) by the knives ll, go
each section comprising two groups of corrugations. Owing to the action of the tappet wheel 5. i the feed of the strip I8 is interrupted at intervals, so that gaps e occur between the sections of match strip placed on the cover strip 25 iii, the cut pieces of strip i6 being guided to the nip of drum 2 and drum! by a guide member il The-united strips are fed by the drums to a table i9 having above it a guillotine knife 20, which descends at intervals so as to cutthe strip so transversely, as indicated by the line 20 in Fig. 3. The front portion of strip on-the-table is lies over the mouth of a chute II and under a vertically reciprocating flat plunger 22. which descends when the knife III has made a cut and pushes the severed portion of the strip into the chute, thereby folding it intobook form. At the bottom of the chute there is a conveyor for carrying the books away. The fold is made in the gap e so that only the cover strip. is bent by the 40 folding device;
The drum 0 may have a ring of teeth adapted to engage the corrugations of the strip b. Additional appliances for various purposes may be incorporated in the machine, for example .a' print- 4 ing device for printing inscriptions on the cover or inside the book.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is: 1. The process of producing book packages of matches'which consists in attaching to a cover strip a series of match strip sections spaced apart by a gap, dividing the combined strips into lengths by means of transverse cuts made through the centres of the match strip sections,
and folding each severed length oflthe com ned strips at the gap between the match strip thereon.
2. The process of producing book packages of two psi-616's of matches which consists in attaching to a cover strip a series of match strip sections spaced apart by a gap, each of said match strip sections comprising two groups of matches and a connecting portion between them, dividing the combined strips into lengths by means of transverse cuts made in the connecting portions between the two groups of matches of each match strip length, and folding each section of the combined strip at the gap between the twofportions of match.
strip sections thereon.
3. The process of producing book packages of matches which consistsin imparting continuous feedmovement to a cover strip, intermittently feeding to said cover-strip a series of adhesive coated sections of match strip, whereby said match strip sections are serially attached to said cover strip with gaps between the sections, dividing the combined strips into lengths by means of transverse cuts made through the centers of the match strip sections, and folding each sevcred length of the combined strips at the gap between the two portions of match strip thereon.
4. The process of producing book packages of matches which consists in imparting continuous feed movement to a cover strip, intermittently feeding to said cover strip a series of adhesive coated sections of match strip, whereby said match strip sections are serially attached to said cover strip with gaps between the sections, each of said \match strip sections comprising two groups of matches and a connecting portion between them, dividing the combined strips into lengths bymeans of transverse cuts made at the connecting portions between the two groups of matches of each match strip section, and folding each length of the combined strip at the gap between the two portions of match strip sections thereon.
5. In a machine for making book packages .01 matches the combination of a continuously driven feed drum for a cover strip, a feed drum arranged to feed an adhesive coated match strip having pockets therein and matches in said pockets into contact with said cover strip, means-for 50.
ets into contact with said cover strip, means for automatically severing said match strip at regular intervals at a part which has not reached said cover strip, two gear wheels fixed to said feed drums respectively, adapted to mesh for driving said second mentioned drum, and means fordisengaging said gear wheels from each other at regular -intervals by movement of said second mentioned drum, so that the sections into which said match strip is cut by the severing operation are applied to said cover strip with gaps between them.
'7. In a machine for makingbook packages of matches the combination claimed in claim 6, the means for disengaging said gear wheels comprising a pivoted arm carrying said second mentioned drum and a cam acting upon said arm.
8. In a machine for making book packages of matches the combination claimed in claim 6, the means for disengaging said gear wheels comprising a pivoted arm carrying said second mentioned drum and a cam acting upon said arm, said arm carrying said automatic means for severing said match strip, and said severing means comprising a knife wheel and a gear'wheel fixed thereto in mesh with the gear wheel fixed to said second mentioned drum.
9. In a machine for making book packages of matches the combination of means for. attaching to a cover strip a series of match stripsections spaced apart by a gap, means for producing transverse cuts through the centers of the match strip sections to divide the combined strips into lengths, and means for folding each severed length of the combined strips at the gap between the two portions of match strip thereon.
-10. In a machine for making book packages of matches the combination of means for continuously feeding a cover strip, means for intermittently feeding a series of adhesively coated sections of match strip into attaching relationship with said coverv strip, whereby said match strip sections are serially attached to said cover strip ducing transverse cuts through the centers of the match strip sections to divide the combined strips into lengths, and'means for folding each severed length oi the combined strips at the gap between the two portions of match strip thereon.
11. The process of producing book matches which comprises feeding a continuous match strip, cutting the match strip into separate pieces, intermittently feeding and attaching the separate pieces of match strip to a cover in spaced apart relationship, and folding the cover between said pieces ot-match strip in such direction that said pieces of match strip are attached-respectively to the inside of said cover at opposite sides of the fold.
