Application October 12, 1934, Serial No. 748,012
2 Claims. (Cl. 311-51) The present invention relates to furniture construction and more particularly to a drop leaf table of the type or design described in my prior Patent No. 1,969,875, filed January 25, 1934, Serial No. 708,272.
In my prior application above mentioned, there is disclosed a drop leaf table in which the top,
when the drop leaf is extended or raised may be rotated at an angle of 90 and opened so that additional leaves may be inserted at the center. In this arrangement the drop leaves and the center leaves may be hingedtogether, the center leaves as described in my prior patent being attaehed by means of a pivot to a frame by means of which the table may be opened or extended i' or the insertion of additional lzaves. In this con struction the adjacent center leaves that-are permanently provided in the table are supported by a so called butterfly pivot in which one wing of the pivot is attached near the edge itself, while the other wing is attached to a transverse bridge or board which in turn is carried by the extension slides.
This construction is shown in the present application and together with other elements which will be described forms a part of the invention.
The present construction combines the construction just described with an added feature by which the table in any one of its various positions may be rigidly secured and thereby avoid practically all kinds of looseness and vibrations that are frequently present in extension tables of the drop leaf type.
The invention will be more fully described in connection with the drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows in perspective a view of the table with part of the top removed to indicate the construction.
Figure 2 shows a plan view of the underside of the table.
Figure 3 shows a detail of construction.
Figure 4 shows an end view of the detail shown in Figure 3 with the end elements partly in section.
Figure 5 shows a perspective of the detail shown in Figures 3 and 4,
Figure 6 shows an elevation through a section of the top of the table at one side, and
Figure '7 shows an enlarged perspective view of the table with the leaves removed.
In Figure 1 the table may be supported by four legs, 1, 2, 3, and 4, extending from a center pedestal 5, from which the supports 6, I, may extend for carrying the stationary beams of the table Itself. i
As indicated in Figures 1, 2 and 6, the permanent center leaves 8 and 9 respectively are fixed at the center adjoining edges to the cross element or bridges I0 and II by means of the butter-fiy hinges I2 and I3 respectively.
-As described in my prior patent the pivot I3 of the butter-fly hinge lines up with the edge where thetwo center leaves join.
As indicated more clearly in Figure 6 the top portion of the hinge is secured by nails or bolts 10 I4 to the underside of the center leaf 8, while the lower portion of the hinge is secured similarly to the cross element or bridge ID. The bridge elments I0 and II are secured to the sliding beams as indicated in Figures 2 and 6., These sliding beams work in pairs, the pair I5 and I6 carrying or supporting the bridge element In, and the pair I! and I8, carrying the bridge element I I.
At the end of the table attached to the end of the sliding beams are cross end pieces I9 and 20, the piece I9 being permanently attached to the beams I5 and I6, and the piece 20 being attached to the beams II and I8. There may also 4 be provided a group of side elements 2|, 22, 23 and 24; 2| and 22, extending from the end piece 25 IS on either side respectively of the table forming a finishing piece and closing with the edges of pieces 23 and 24 when the table is in a closed position without any removable leaves at the center. The end pieces l9 and 20 each carry a locking member 25 through which the bolt 26 passes. The bolt 26 may be threaded at its upper end 21, and the end leaves 28 and 29, which are the drop leaves of the table, may be provided with a recessed plate 30 threaded to receive the bolt end 21'. Lock nuts or collars 3| and 32 may be provided just above the locking member to prevent the bolt from dropping through. This arrangement is shown in perspective in Figure 5.
As indicated in Figure 1, two locking elements may be provided, one at one end of the table and the other at the other end of the table.
-These locking members are carried by the end elements I9 and 20, which it will be noted, move apart as the table is opened up. The locking elements 25 and 26 may be placed in the middle as indicated in Figure 1, or off at the sides as indicated in Figure 2.
y In the arrangement shown in Figure 2, when the table is closed, the locking member 25 may be made to engage the hole 33, while the locking member 26 may similarly engage the hole 34. In this way the lock will serve for the table both in any open or closed position.
In Figure 7 there is shown the supports 6 and 'I along this stationary beam.
extending upward from the central pedestal 5. These central supports as previously indicated carry the fixed or stationary beams 40 and II.
The sliding beams l5 and IS on the inside and I1 and IS on the outside work in opposite directions The frame support with the pedestal, the extending supports 6 and I and the cross supporting beams 42 and 43 form the conventional con-' struction'as indicated in the description in the applicants Patent No. 1,969,875, see particularly Figure 12. In accordance with Figure 2 the sliding beams l5 and I6 carry the end cross piece I9 of the table which is a finished piece and pre sented to view looking at the table from the outside. This frame at the sides is completed by the boards 2| and 22 which are attached at the ends of the bridge element Ill. The locking device 25 may be provided at the center or at the side depending upon the choice made for the position of the receptacle for the bolt in the bottom of the table top. The external sliding beams l1 and i8 may have the outside irame completed in the same manner by means of the side pieces 23 and 24 and the end piece 20 having a similar lock 25.
In the operation of the table it will be noted that when the table is in the extended position,
' beams.

the end pieces l9 and 29 travel out relatively in the same position with the end leaves 28 and 29 so that these members are always adapted to be locked in position in whatever way the table is extended. c
Having now described my invention, I claim:
1. An extension table of the. swivel drop leaf type having center leaves and drop leaves hinged respectively to the center leaves, two pairs of sliding beams supported by a pair of stationary beams, a bridge element joining each pair of sliding beams, means for pivoting the center leaves respectively to said bridge elements for a relative rotation of of said-center leaves and their hinged drop leaves when in the same plane, a locking means carried by each pair of sliding beams, a cooperating locking means attached to said drop leaves, said locking means adapted to be aligned when the center and drop leaves have been rotated through 90 into position for extending the table.
2. The extension table as recited in claim 1 in which the locking means carried by each pair of sliding beams is mounted on a cross support attached to the outer end of each pair of sliding ESTEY P. CHARAK.
