Our invention relates to water heaters and has for its purpose the provision of a heater of this type which will be economical in construction and highly efcient in operation so that a given temperature of water being heated can be produced with the consumption of a lesser amount of fuel than is ordinarily the case. We accomplish this purpose by providing a relatively great area of Water heating surface and by utilizing the products of combustion for water heating purpose throughout a great extent of their travel to the stack.
In the drawing chosen to illustrate our invention the scope whereof is set forth in the appendl5 ed claim.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a Water heater constructed in accordance with our invention; and
Figure 2, a section on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing our improved heater is shown as comprising a body portion A which includes an outer cylindrical member or drum I0 supported upon suitable legs II. Disposed within the member I0 is a cylindrical member I2 of lesser diameter and length than the member I0 and supported from and secured to said member I0 through the instrumentality of stay bolts I3.
The member I2 is coaxial with the member I 0 and this condition provides a water jacket vI4 between the members. The front end of the body portion A, is provided with an opening I5 through which fuel is supplied to the interior of the member I I, which latter constitutes a fire box for the heater and is completely surrounded by water circumferentially. A door I6 controls the opening I5 and carries a suitable draft door I'l. From the foregoing it will be apparent that when a re is present the heat exchange surface effective for heating water in the jacket I4 is very extensive and results in a highly efcient utilization of the heat units of the gases of combustion with corresponding rapid rise in the temperature of the Water. To further utilize the gases of combustion for water heating We locate above the body portion A a water jacketed cylindrical member B whose axis is parallel to the axis of the member A. The water jacket of the member B is indicated at I8 and said jacket is connected to the jacket I4 by tubular members I9 which also serve to support the member B upon the member A.
Another tubular member 20 connects the interior of the member B with the interior of the cylindrical member I 2, or in other words with the fire box of the heater, to permit the gases of combustion to pass from the fire box to the interior of the member B. The front end of the member B inwardly of the Water jacket I8 is closed by a removable plate 2I While the corresponding portion of the rear end of said member is covered by a plate 22 having a tubular nipple formation 23 for telescopic engagement with a stack pipe. Disposed within the member B beneath the nipple formation 23 is a longitudinal baffle plate 24 which terminates short of the forward end of member B. This bale plate serves to direct the gases of combustion coming from the fire box forwardly in the member B and then rearwardly to the stack, said gases during this travel serving to further heat the water in the jacket I8. A cold water intake 25 is provided in the bottom of portion A, while a hot water outlet 26 is provided in top of the portion B. A suitable connection -may be associated with the outlet 26 for conveying hot water to a storage tank or in effecting any other desired distribution of the heated water.
In addition we provide a fixture 21 to which a relief valve is adapted to be associated.
We claim:
A hot water heater formed of hollow outer and inner cylindrical members one of which is smaller than and nested Within the other and constituting a fire box, means holding said members in spaced relation to provide a water jacket extending completely around the cylindrical wall and completely across one end of the inner member and further extending partially across the other end of the inner member to provide an opening to the re box directly surrounded by the Water jacket, a water jacketed nue disposed above and having its axis extending parallel to axis of the members, a plurality of connections between the water jacket of the flue and that surrounding the inner member, said connections forming supports for the flue, a stack connection at one end of the flue, a baffle plate extending longitudinally of the flue beneath the stack connection thereof and terminating short of the end of the flue remote from the stack connection, and a connection between the flue and the lire box extending through both of said water jackets between the vertical `axis of the heater and the stack connection and also constituting a support for the flue.
