The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in dispensing containers and more particularly to a metal container having a pouring spout which is movable from a housed position lying within the outer limits of the end seam of the container to a dispensing position wherein it extends above and beyond thelsaid end seam. l
An object of the invention is to provide a dispensing container having a raised portion and a metal spout rotatably mounted thereon for movement from a housed position wherein the spout lies substantially flat against the end of the container to a dispensing position wherein the spout extends over and beyond the edge of the end seam of the container.
A further ob-ject of the invention is to provide a dispensing container ofthe above type, wherein inclined raised kportions areprovided in the container end for forcing the spout upwardly and over the end seam when it is moved toa dispensing position. 1
A further object of the invention'is to provide a container of the above type wherein the 'end of the raised portion is closed except for a relatively small pouring opening, and wherein the spout is provided with a member overlying said closed end for covering the pouring opening when the spout is turned to a housed position within the limits of the end seam.
A still further object of the invention is to providea dispensing container of the above type wherein the spout is made of spring metal so that as itis moved to a dispensing position, it will be sprung upwardly to extend over and" beyond the end seam, and so that as it is returned to a housed position, it will spring back to lie at against the end of the container. .A
The above and other objects `will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
In the accompanying drawing: Y
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the dispensing container showing the pouring spout in a closed position. l
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the pouring spout in a dispensing position.
Figure 3 is anr enlarged sectional View taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. '1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view taken along the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary side View in section showing the raised lugs for 'forcing the spout portion upwardly. n
Figure 6 is a detail view in section showing the manner in which the pouring spout is placed on the can end before the raised portion is anged.
Figure '7 is a detail View showing the raised portion after it has been flanged to hold the pouring spout in position.
The invention relates generally to a metal container for dispensing oil or other liquid products. The container ends are secured tothe body portion preferably by double seaming. The top end is provided with a raised portion which is formed integrally therewith and serves as a securing means for a dispensing spout. The dispensing spout is provided with a shank portion portion having an opening therethrough tting over said raised portion. After the shank of the spout is placed over the raised portion, then the raised portion is pressed down to form a flange which projects over the shank of the spout, thus permanently securing the spout to the container end but permitting said spout to be shifted about a 20 so as to pass over the double seam andfprojectr beyond the same for dispensing the contents of the container. There are various ways in which the spout can be urged over the double seam, as
for instance by flexing the can end when the spout is turned to a dispensing position, or by forming the spout of spring metal, or by causing the spout to be bent as it is turned to a dispensing position. The raised portion has an opening formed at one side of the center thereof and the shank of the spout has an upwardly projecting member which is bent over the upper end of the raised portion and thus serves as a closing member for closing the opening when the spout is turned to a position so that is is housed beneath the outer limits of the double seam. When lthe spout is turned to a position for dispensing the contents, then the closure member uncovers the opening. The container end is provided with raised lugs which incline upwardly and outward- `1y from the plane of the end toward the double seam, and these raised lugs are disposed adjacent the double seam and serve as a means for forcing the spout upwardly to cause it to ride over the double seam when it is turned to a position for dispensing. 1
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the container consists of a body portion I0 having a top end Il double seamed thereto, as indicated at l2. The container end Il is provided with a.
raised portion I3 (see Fig. 6). This raised portion is formed integral with the end and may be formed by drawing the metal. A spout I5 is secured to this raised portion. The spout is provided with a shank portion I5a which is formed with an opening adapted to freely fit down over the raised portion. After the shank is placed on the raised portion, then the raised portion is pressed downward s o as to form `a. flange I3a which overlies the shank and secures the spout to the container end. 'I'he opening in the shank of the spout is so dimensioned that the spout will turn freely on this flanged raised portion and about an axis centrally thereof and Vperpendicular to the plane of the containers-nd.
In the particular embodiment ofthe invention, `the spout is made of spring metal and normally lies substantially in a plane ofthe raised portion and in contact with the outer face of the container end II, as indicated in Fig. 3 off the drawing.l lSaid spout has the side edge portions I8 bent upwardly in order to provide a trough'portionl for dispensing the liquid contents of the container but these upwardly turned portions do not 'interfere with the springing of the metal'of the spout kso that it` may be sprung to a position tofoyerliefthe double seam. y container end is provided ,with raised po'rtions IJ which incline upwardly and outwardly yfrom' the plane of the container end toward the c'iouble seam. These raised portions are disposed adjacent the, doubleV seam and are so dimensioned that when the spout is turned from the position indicated inj Fig. 1 either to the. right or to the left, itjwill contact one of the raised portions I1, yandthis'will gradually iiex the spout so that' it Will-pass' o ver the double seam and 'overhang the Vfsal'ne, as shown ,in Fig. 4, for dispensing the liquid conte-nts of the. container. When the spout isfreturned to the positionv of Fig.v 1, it will be released and will spring back into a position substantiallyin contactfwith theouter facejof the containerend aridwill thus be completely housed within the outer limits of the double seam.
The raised portionwhich secures` the spout to the container'endis also completely housed .within the outer limits of theA double. seam,y so 'that when` the spout isin Closed position, as 'Shown 'in'Flgs 1Y and 3,1 neither the spout nor the proi jeetinglportion to whichrit is attached DIZOJ'eCts `above the AlimitsA ofV the double seam,v and, there- ,forecontainersjinay' be readily, stackedv o ne on weather.
` The'raised portion I3'has an opening I4 formed therethrough whichy is disposedl at one sideM ofthe i centerof thev raised portion. I.3, as clearly :shown in the drawing. The shank portion I5a ofthe spout fis bent upwardly and thence over the raised portion, 'asindicated at I6; This provides aclosre4 member 'for the opening I 4. `This closure memberv is so dimensionedr and positionedon the shankof the spout Athat whenitherispout isA in the position. shown in Fig. 1, it overlies the opening and will firmly contactwith the outer facevof the raisedA portion so as to seal the opening, When, .howeven/the spout isturned'to the positionshown inA Fig.- 2, then this closure member will uncover the opening Whichis at one. side of.; the center of the raised portion. The opening is kpreferably on the side-off the` raisedi-portion adjacent the-double seam, and therefore whenA the spoutis turned to the position indicated at Fig. 2; Athe contents poured from the opening I4 wil1 passV into the spout andbe directed by the spout over the double seam and Well away from the side wall of the container.
From the above it will be apparent that a dispensing means has been provided for a container Awhich is very simple in construction and which includes a pouring spout permanently but rotatably attached to the container. This pouring spout also serves as a closure for the container so that when the spout is moved to dispensing position, the container is open and free and the liquid contents may be freely dispensed onto and over the spout. When the spout is moved to its housed position, thenfthe pouring opening is closed and in this position not only the spout but the means which attaches it tothe container end are all completely housed Within the outer limits of the double seam.
Furthermore, when the spout is attached to the raised portion projecting above the plane of the end-,there are no pockets or recesses within the container adjacent the raised portion which will prevent the, emptying of the entire contents of the container.
It is obvious that minor changes inthe details of construction may be made without departing Afrom the spirit oiV the invention as set forthy in j the appended claims. i
.limits of the double seam when over and iniy contact withv the container end and so as to spring ofver the double seam when turned to dispensing position, said container end having .raised inclinedlugs for forcibly contacting with said spout for springing the same over the double` seam when theA spoutis turned to dispensing position.
