The inner end of the tube 34 is provided with a cup washer 31 whereby the pressure applied on the lubricant delivered to the adapter causes the point 33 tightly to engage the iltting 33. A plurality of chucking members 33 are mounted in the end of the sleeve 33 and have h inturned lips 33 adapted to enter a peripheral groove 40 formed adjacent the endof the iltting 33 back of a hemispherical head 4I. The chucking members have tapering surfaces 42 which cooperate with the tapering inner wall 43 of the sleeve 33 adjacent its outer end. The members- 33 is normally maintainedon its seat by a spring 5I. The spring rests on an inturnedlip 32 adjacent the inner end of` the fitting. Initially. this lip extends outwardly, as shown in dotted lines. After the closure 33 and the springl have been positioned inthe bore, however, `the lip 32 is turned inwardly and constitutes means positively preventing ythe closure and its spring from being forced through the bore by the pres-v sure on the lubricant supplied thereto.4v
The adapter 33 may be connected to the fitting 35 33 simply'by pressing the adapter over'the end of. the fitting. While theinternal diameter of the* lip 39 is normally less than the maximum diameter of the head 4I, the chucking members 33 spread slightly when pressed inwardly of the 40 sleeve 33-against the v4pressure ofthe spring V44. 'I'his permits the chucking members to snap over the head 4l so that the lips 3 3 enter the groove 40. When the fittingy has Vbeen filled, releasingy the pressure on the lubricant beingdispensed. it .will permit retraction of the tube 34 and remove the reactive force on the barrel 32 and the sleeve 33. This gives ,the chucking members sufficient free movement to expand so they pass' over the head 4| of the fitting 33. The operation of cony necting the .adapter to the fitting and of disconnecting it therefrom, is obviously very simple and can be performed very quickly. Figure 6 shows a dispensing gun capable of one-hand operation. The body of the gun is similar in construction to Figure l, the only difference being that the'base. I2 has a gripping disc 15 secured thereto by means of a tube 13 25 through which thepiston rod I3 slides. The end of the rodV i5 is provided with a cooperating, gripping disc 11. A spring 13 between the discs tends toretract the piston rod I5 from the cyl-v" inder Il. This, ofcourse, withdraws the plunger 30 i3 from the tube |14..V The operation of the device shown in .Figure 6 obviously is effected by gripping the disc 15 with the fingers and pressing the disc 11 toward it with the palm of the hand. When -a dispensing operation has been com- ,35 pleted, the spring 13 retracts the piston rod Il and the plunger; I3.` By thisconstruction, a pressure of approximately 5060# per sq. in. may easily be applied to the lubricant to be dispensed. the operator using only one hand to manipulate o the dispenser. y I.

Figure 8 shows a `coupler which is similar in all respects to'that of Figure 2 except that the v tube'34' thereof 'has a pointed end 33 which is adapted to enter the bore in a fitting when the 55 cated by dotted lines InFigure 8.
Figure 9 illustrates a slightly modified form of piston and packing for the piston rod. InFlgure 9, the piston I3 is carried on a sleeveill ywhich is bored to receive the piston rod I3. The sleeve 3| is also bored to receive packing and is internally threaded to admit a packing-compressing plug 32 to constitute a packing gland.

It will be apparent from the foregoing descrip- `tion that the invention provides a relatively inex- 70 pensive yet highly eiiicient lubricating lsystem comprising a lubricant receptaeleadapted to be screwed into the part or machinery to be lubricated, a dispensing gun, and an adapter by which the gun may be connected to the receptacle. -The 75 inventionl is capable of delivering iiuid under very high pressures, such as 10,000 lbs. per sq. in.. and yet is so simple and easy to operate that it can be used satisfactorily by persons of very limited mechanical skill. Use of thai-device is further facilitated by the factl that orte-hand operation thereof is possibleff-f Although I have illustrated anddescribed herein but one preferred form of the invention, together with certain modificationsv thereof, it will be apparent that numerous changes in the construction disclosed herein may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of theappended claims. ,i

1. An adapter for engaging 8;-iitting end, comprising a cylindrical body with` a bore therethrough, gripping jaws mounted adjacent one end of the body and movable radially thereof, a tube lying in said' bore with the one end between said jaws and slidable axially thereof an abutment extending inwardly from said'bodf into said bore, a spring compressed between sai abutment and said jaws, and means exerting radial pressure on the jaws on retraction of the body.

A'coupler for dispensers, adapted'to engage al headed fitting and comprising a tubular body, a check-valve seat adjacent one end thereof, a plunger reciprocable therein, a washer making the body, a checkkvalve on said seat, 'a spring urging the ,washer into abutment with the plunger and said valve on its seat, gripping jaws movably carried between the plunger and the body. the contacting surfaces of the jaws and body being shaped to a spring surrounding theplunger and effective body that the jaws will be contracted.

A` coupler for connecting dispensers to; headed ttings, comprising 'a tubular nose piece contracted at one end, 'a plurality of gripping jaws disposed in said end for radial and axial movement, a plunger within said jaws, a spring on said lunger effective to urge the jaws toward said contracted end, a check-valve seat secured in the other end of said, nose piece, a valve on said seat, a sealing washer abutting the end of said plunger remote from saidcontracted end, and a. spring betweensaid valve and washer.
