This invention relates to anornamental jewelry structure, `and more particularly to a device of this character havingincorporated therein an i initial display member adapted to display any desired initials and forming a relatively sudsidiary 5 portion of the ornamental structure.

In the embodiment vof the invention as illustrated in Fig. 1, I designates generally an ornamental jewelry vstructure in the form of an ornamental 'pin,` the main portions of which may consist of one or morelooped strands 2 suitably arranged to present an ornamental appearance and made upof a metal portion 3 and an ornamental portion 4 closely united therewith to provide a strand of va novel and ornamental character. The ornamental structure may be provided with a pin 5 pivotally mounted thereon, as at 6, and a catch I for receiving and holding the free end of the pin. AnV initial display member 8 is formed integral with or iixedly `united to a portion 9 ofthe ornamental struc-l ture and is of a relatively small size as comparedwith theornamental structure to provide an initial display means as an adjunct thereto. The initial display member comprises a supporting member .Ill having opposed upstanding sides Il, and which may be provided with an opening I2 located substantially centrally thereof and between the upstanding sides I I. A separate supporting plate I4, which may or may not -be provided with a central opening I5, is shapedto t within the upstanding 'sides II and rest upon the supporting member I0. The separate supporting plate I 4 is provided upon one side adjacent to a lateral edge thereof with a plurality of raised detents I 1 for engagement `with recesses I8 formed in the ends of initial members I9 tor hold the initial members securely in spaced position upon the supporting plate I4.

A holding member 20 is pivotally secured at one end to one end portion of the supporting member I0, as indicated at 22, and has an opening 23 formed therein which may con-form substantially in size and` location with the openings `I2 and I5, when present, in the supporting member and separate supporting plate respectively. The lateral edges of the holding member 2li are' adapted to lie partially or wholly within the upstanding sides II of the supporting member lil in the closed positions of the parts, and the holding member 20 is provided with a someywhat resilient end lug 24 adapted to snap over and engage the end 25 of the supporting member` I0, which end may be slightly beveled or inclined, to retain the holding member and supporting member in closed position. The form of ornamental jewelry structure illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing comprises an ornamental member 26, in the form of a riding crop, to which may be pivotally secured a pin 21, as at 28, and which may support a suitable catch 29 for engagement with the end portion of the pin 21. An initial display member 8, formed as above described, is secured to or formed integral with the rornamental member. 26, being in this instance secured thereto or formed integral therewith valong a line located adjacent to the upper edge portion of the initial display member 8. In this, as in the structure previously described, the initial display member is united with the ornamental jewelry structure as an element thereof rather than as constituting the dominant display feature, and is of relatively small size with respect to the ornamental structure to provide an initial display as a subsidiary element of the ornamental structure which does not detract from nor interfere with the ornamental effect produced by the ornamental structure. While the shape of the initial display member is illustrated as of rectangular form, it may assume any other suitable or desired shape dependent upon the arrangement of parts and appearance of the ornamental structure with which it is to be employed.

While the supporting plate `Ill is shown herein as being provided with a central opening corresponding substantially in size andshape with that of the holding member 20, the central portion of the separate Supporting plate may be made imp'erforate or formed with'striated or other perforations as may best serve to display the initial portions of the initial members.

In forming a jewelry structure of an ornamental character as described and providing an initial display member adapted to be incorporated therein and form a part thereof it is desirable to provide a structure wherein the initial display member may assume various different forms in outline, such as rectangular, oval, diamond shaped and the like. By providing a separate initial supporting plate and constructing the parts to permit vertical insertion of the supporting plate between the upstanding sides of the supporting member as well as the provision of means carried by one face of the supporting plate for properly spacing the initial members any suit- The initial members I9 are so formed as to provide initialV able or desired shape of initial display member may be employed to conform with the appearance of the jewelry 'structure as a whole or a part of its design.

Where the supporting member of the initial display member is given a shape other than that shown, the separate supporting plate and holding member are correspondingly shaped and the opposed upstanding walls of the supporting mems lber are formed to receive the separate supporting plate and initial members therebetween, where tical movement between the upstanding walls of the supporting member, provides a simple and efficient means for the display of initials wherein the initials may be readily inserted or removed and various forms of initials employed without bending or distortion of the initial members and without the careful manipulation necessary for the insertion or removal of initial members in devices of this character as heretofore employed.

What I claim is:-

1. In a device of the character described, an initial display member comprising a supporting plate member and holding plate member hinged- 1y connected together, said holding plate member being provided with a display opening for the display of initial members, said supporting plate member having opposed upstanding side portions, a separate supporting plate insertable within or removable from between the upstanding side portions of the supporting plate member byr 45 movement in a direction at right anglesto the" supportingl plate member, initial members carried by said separate supporting plate, and means forming parts of said supporting plate member and holding plate member for holding said initial member and separate supporting plate in display position relative to the opening in said holding plate member when said-hingedly connected plate members are in closed position.

2. An initial display structure comprising a supporting member provided with spaced upstanding sides, a holding member pivotally connected to said supporting member and provided with a display opening, means carried by one of said members engaging the other said member in the closed position of the members to releas- 'ably secure the members in closed position, an initial supporting plate and initial members receivable between the spaced upstanding sides of said supporting member, and means forming parts of said members for holding the initial supporting plate and initial members in fixed position between said members when the members are secured in closed position.

3. In an initial display structure, a supporting member comprising a base and lateral raised portions forming a recess, a holding member pivotally connected to Asaid supporting member adjacent to one end thereof having a portion fitting within said recess and provided with a display opening, a separate supporting plate shaped to fit substantially within said recess and provided with means for locating one or more display members relative to the display opening in said holding member, a display member carried by said separate supporting plate, and cooperating means carried by said supporting member and holding member respectively for securing said holding member in closed position relative to said supporting member and retaining said display member and separate supporting plate in xed position relative thereto.
