CHESHIRE Leslie R. N. Car-valho, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to t Glass Comp a corporation 3 Claims. (Cl. 215-43) for completely obscuring and protecting the raw metal surfaces at the extremities of the threaded band which is nested within the outer smooth shell.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a closure of the type disclosed in the above mentioned application which, in attaining the above noted protective features, results in a closure that is free from conspicuous joints and sharp edges and which is satisfactory in use.
Other objects will be in part apparent'and in part pointed out hereinafter.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a vertical transverse sectional view of a metal closure manufactured in accordance with the principles of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken substantially along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The closure includes an outer shell in consisting of a circular top portion ii and a depending annular flange or skirt l2, the latter having its lower edge portion beaded or curled inwardly andupwardly to form a hollow bead I3 within which the lower edge M of a screw band i5 is nested.
The screw band i5 is provided with screw threads l6 that are rolled in the usual manner.
The band is slightly greater in length than the internal circumference of the skirt I2 and the adjacent ends thereof are folded or reversed upon themselves outwardly in such a manner that the raw edges ll thereof are concealed behind the metal of the band and occupy a position in close I proximity to the inner surface of the outer shell ill. The screw threads l6 terminate short of the ends of the band l5.
The folded ends of the band l5 abut as at l8 in such a manner as to present a smooth joint that will not interfere with the application of the assembled closure to a container.
From the above description it is apparent that the present invention results in a closure in which the contents of the container to which it may be applied cannot seep through the joint l8 and penetrate the spaces l9 behind the metal of the band IS in which the raw edges H are nested. Furthermore, all exposed portions of the closure are smooth and even and there are no rough 5 portions or projections present that might be obstructed by fins or other defects that are sometimes encountered in screw threaded types of finishes on glass containers.
Modifications may be resorted to within the m spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 1
1. A closure formed of sheet metal and comprising a top cover portion and a two-ply depending skirt, the outer ply of the skirt being integral 15 with the cover portion and the inner ply being formed of a strip of slightly greater length than the'internal circumference of the outer ply and being curved to fit within said outer ply, said inner ply being formed with screw threads that terminate short of the ends of the strip, the extreme ends of said strip being folded upon themselves outwardly and being nested between the metal of the strip and the wall of the shell.
2. A closure formed of sheet metal and comprising a top cover portion and a two-ply depending 'skilt, the outer ply of the skirt being integral with the cover portion and the inner ply being formed of a strip of slightly greater'length than the internal circumference of the outer ply and being curved to fit within said outer ply, said 30 inner ply being formed with screw threads that terminate short of the ends of the strip, the extreme ends of said strip being nested between the metal of the strip and the wall of the shell.
3. A closure formed of sheet metal and comprising a top cover portion and a two-ply depending skirt, the outer ply of the skirt being integral with the cover portion and the inner ply being formed of a strip of slightly greater length than the internal circumference of the outer ply and 40 being curved. to fit within said outer ply, said inner ply being formed with screw threads that terminate short of the ends of the strip, said ends being folded upon themselves outwardly and being nested between the metal of the strip and the wall of the shell, the edges formed by said ends beingfolded abutting in close proximity to said shell.
