It is the general object of this invention to provide a novel and improved side bearing of cheap and simple construction, which will be self cleaning and at the same time highly eflicient in operation.
To these ends, generally stated, the invention consists in the novel parts and novel combinations ofparts hereinafter defined in the claim and. described in the following specification, made in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to the same or similar parts throughout the various views, and, in which,

Referring first to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, there is provided a one piece casting A Olf greater length than Width. This casting forms an open sided housing having apertured tongues 4 at its ends whereby it may be bolted, riveted or otherwise secured to the truck bolster of a car truck, or, if desired, it may be inverted from the position shown and secured to the body bolster of the truck. The housing A includes a roller bed or tread plate 5 over which two rollers 6 work. The roller engaging surface of the roller bed diverges sharply from the longitudinal central part of the casting, so that the two rollers 6 used will be self centering on the bed. The under part of the roller bed may be recessed, as shown, to lighten the casting, a transverse rib being preferably provided at the longitudinal central part of the under part of the bed to give the casting adequate strength.
Rising upwardly from the transverse central part of the roller bed 5 and extending longitudinally of the casting is a central partition wall 1 and one of the rollers 6 is disposed at one side of this wall and the other roller is disposed at the other side of the wall. An opening 8 is. provided in the wall 1 and a cross pin 9 projects through this opening and through central openings in the two rollers 6. The rollers 6- have hubs 6a projecting from their opposing faces and these two hubs abut each other and they are received within the opening 8 of the wall 7. The cross pin 9 is preferably a rivet 5 having heads bearing against the outer surfaces of the two rollers 6. The pin 9 tightly holds the two rollers together in assembled relation. To limit the movement of the rollers 6 over the roller bed 5, upstanding roller stop lugs H] are 10 provided at the ends of the roller bed. Two of these stop lugs to are formed iii-spaced relationat one end of the bed 5, and two. at the other end of the bed, the two lugs at each end of the bed being spaced from each other to form 15 notches l I through which the wind may sweep to assist in cleaning the roller bed 5. The opening 8 is of such a length and of such shape as to permit free movement of the rollers 6 from one end of the bed 5 to the other. 20
Two rollers 6 assembled together by means of the rivet pin 9 are provided, rather than a single double tread roller to permit the parts being readily assembled.
As the housing A includes no side walls pro- 25 jecting above the roller bed 5, wind may have free access to the roller bed to sweep and clean the same, so as to permit the proper action of the rollers 6 over the roller bed 5 at all times. As the rollers 6 are tied to the casting A by 0 means of the pin 9, the entire side bearing when once assembled, may be packed and shipped as a unit.
Referring now to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 toq7, there is provided a one piece casting B much on the same order as the casting A and of greater length than width. This casting B forms an open sided housing having apertured tongues l2 at its ends, whereby it may be bolted, riveted or 40 otherwise secured to the truck bolster of a car truck, or if desired, it may be inverted from the position shown and secured to the body bolster of the truck. The housing B includes a roller bed or tread plate l3 over which a grooved. dual 45 roller l4 works. The central part of the roller tread surface of the roller bed is depressed relative to the end portions so that the dual roller I4 will be self centering on the bed. The under part of the roller bed may be recessed as shown 5 to lighten the casting.
Rising upwardly from the transverse central part of the roller bed l3 and extending longitudinally of the casting is a central web l5. The dual roller I 4 is grooved to receive the 55 web l5 so that the two spaced tread elements of the roller straddle the web I5. Upstanding roller stop lugs I6 are provided at the ends' of the roller bed l3, the web I 5 joining these stop lugs. The tongues l2 are preferably provided with side webs joining the stop lugs 16 to brace and strengthen the entire casting. The
upper ends of the stop lugs l6 are preferably peaked, as best shown in Fig. 6, and a pin i1 running across between the two stop lugs and partially received within the groove of the dual roller 14 is secured at its ends in the peaks of the stop lugs. The pin form of a rivet, as shown, and, of' course, this pin co-acting with the web l5 guides the dual roller roller to the casting A for packing and shipment. Of course, the space between the pin 11 and the web I5 forms a slot l8 through which the reduced central part of dual roller l4 travels.
In certain respects, the form of the invention shown in Figs. -1 to 3 is simpler to construct and assemble than the form, shown in Figs. 4 to 7, while inother respects, the form shown in Figs. 4 to '7 is of simpler construction than that shown in Figs. 1 to 3. When the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3 is used, the dual roller formed by the two rollers fiandcross pin 9 is assembled when the side bearing is set up for shipment or use, but, of course, no cross pin I! need besecured in place. In the other form of the invention shown in Figs. 4 to- 7,

It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, details, arrangement and proportions of the various parts without departing from the scope of the present invention.
What is claimed is:-
A side bearing for cars, comprising an open sided housing forming a roller tread plate, a
central longitudinally extending division wall upstanding from said tread plate, said division wall having a pin receiving opening therein, a pin projecting through said opening, a pair of rollers working on said tread plate, one of which rollers being at one slde of said division wall and the other of which rollers being at the other side of said division wall, said rollers being mounted on said pin, and lugs upstanding from said tread plate and limiting the travel of said rollers, there being jacent each end of said tread plate and the lugs adjacent each end of the tread plate being laterally spaced frorneach other to form notches through which dirt from said tread plate may sweep.
