Description

y FALKENSTEIN ROLL PACKAGE AND END LABEL THEREFOR Filed May 4, 1935 INVENTOR fz/A/v /CAL/(E/VS TE/N. /Qnrkfl ATTORNEYS Patented May 18, 1937 UNlTED STATE PTENT FFICE 2,080,564 ROLL PACKAGE AND END LABEL THEREFOR V 7 Ivan Falkenstein, New York, N. Y.
Application May 4, 1935, Serial No. 19,757
3 Claims.
This invention relates to labeled packages of bolts of cloth or other rolls of material, and labels for same.
It is an object of this invention to provide a labeling means which shall be neat and well secured, and in particular will be outside the wrapper which covers the end of the roll, will be secured to the roll so that it cannot fall off, and which will be readily removable and replaceable for inspecting the roll.
In the drawing, wherein I have shown an illustrative embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the label member itself, with securing string;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the label member attached to a bolt of cloth, parts of the inner and outer wrapper being broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 2.
2 My improved label, designated generally as I0, consists of body portion l2 and wing portions M, 16. Preferably the body portion l2 bears the appropriate label designations, brand name, pattern, length, or the like. Wing portions l4 and 25 I6 terminate in enlarged heads l5 and ll respectively. A string i8 is looped through hole 20 in body portion l2.
The article to which the label I is to be applied is illustrated as a roll of cloth 22 rolled on 30 a hollow core 24. A hole 26 is provided in core 24. Over the roll of cloth there is an inner wrapper 28, which projects beyond the ends and is turned over inwardly, covering the entire end except at the very center. Over the inner wrapper 28 there is provided an outer wrapper 30,
which, however, covers only the cylindrical surface and does not extend beyond the'ends.
My label is attached by placing it flat on the end of the roll with the body portion over the open center of the inner wrapper, and the wing members extended and their ends tucked in between the inner and outer wrappers along the cylindrical wall portion. The string I8 is passed through the open space where the inner wrapper comes together at the end, and is tied through the hole 26 in core 24%. The ends of the wings may be tucked in after the outer wrapper is applied, or they may be put in position first and the outer wrapper applied over them. It will be noted that the ends of the heads l are provided with relatively sharp corners and are free from slits, concave cut-outs, or the like, whereby they may be readily inserted between the inner and outer wrappers.
55 Frequently it is necessary to open the end of a bolt or to open up the entire wrapping, for inspection, check measuring, and the like, after which the package is to be neatly wrapped up again. It will be seen that my invention en- 60 ables the label to be freed and the end wrapper (Cl. IO-20) to be opened or both wrappers removed, the label all the while being attached to the bolt so that it will not be lost, and upon closing the wrapper up again the label can be re-applied just as before, without any tearing and gluing. Furthermore, the label lies flat on the package and is firmly held from coming off accidentally. Either just one end may be labeled in this manher and the other end simply enclosed, or both ends may be thus labeled. It will be realized that the string fastening might be dispensed with or an equivalent provided, and that other modifications might be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention, wherefore I wish to be limited only by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An end label, for use with a roll of material having an open-end cylindrical wrapper thereabout, comprising an enlarged body member for the label insignia, reduced wing portions integral with and extending out from opposite edges of said body member, and integral enlarged heads at the ends of said wing members, the ends of said heads providing relatively sharp corners while being free from slits and concavities whereby they may readily be inserted between the roll of material and the cylindrical wrapper around the sides of same.
2. A labeled package comprising a core, a roll of material about said core, an inner wrapper about the sides of said roll and projecting beyond and folded over the end to near the axis, an open-end cylindrical outer wrapper around the sides of the roll, and a label across the end of the roll comprising an enlarged center portion covering the axial break in the inner wrapper, and reduced wings integral with and extending from opposite edges of the center portion of the label and spanning the end of the roll, said Wings terminating in enlarged heads bent over and inserted along the sides between the inner and outer Wrappers, the ends of said heads being free from slits or concavities whereby they may be readily inserted between the wrappers.
3. A labeled package comprising a hollow core member having attaching means at one end, a roll of material about said core, an inner wrapper about the sides of said roll and projecting beyond and folded over the end terminating short of the axis, an outer open-end cylindrical wrapper about the sides of said roll, an end label covering the axial break in the inner wrapper and having opposed integral side wings extending across the end, the ends of said wings being bent over and inserted between the inner Wrapper and the outer wrapper, and secondary securing means extending from the label through the break in the inner wrapper to the attaching means at the end of the core.
