IMPROVEMENT IN TOY BUILDING-BLOCKS.

either by painting the letter or figure on the face, which must be done by hand with each 7 block, and renders the blocks too expensive for popular sale, or by pasting a lettered or figured piece of paper on the face of each block, as. shown in Figure 1. This is objectionable, as the paper is apt to become detached when the blocks are wet, while the level of the face is destroyed, so that the blocks cannot be properly used in building.

I obviate all these difficulties by first coating the block A, Fig. 2, with varnish, a, and while the latteris in a sticky condition applying thereto a sheet of paper, 1), upon which the letter or figure hasbeen so printed as to transfer to the varnished surface, whichis thus ornamented at a fraction of the expense required for painting by hand, the ornamental figure being absorbed or embedded in the film of varnish or cement, so that it cannot be detached without removing the Wood face of the block, forming a permanent figured face in various colors, if desired, that is absolutely level, as shown in the exaggerated section, Fig. 3.

I am aware that it is common to transfer prints from paper to wood in the manner above stated, and it is this mode of transfer, whiclrI hereby disclaim, applied in connection with a building-block, which produces the improved article.

I claim- As a new article of manufacture, an ornamented or lettered building-block having a level face coated with varnish, in which is embedded the ornamented figure or letter, as specified.
