The present invention relates to household equipment and more particularly to a clothes ironer, its arrangement in a cabinet structure, and the novel manner in which the ironer is driven.

Another object of the invention is to provide a control means for a driving device for operating interchangeable household devices so that the said driving device may be used to operate a clothes ironer, the said control means including a control lever arranged adjacent to the knee of a person sitting in front of the ironer so that it becomes unnecessary for a person operating the ironer to remove his or her hands from the clothes being ironed in order to start and stop the driving device by means of a switch mounted directly on the device.

With the above and other ends in view the invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation illustrating the ironer in its nested position;

Like characters of reference are employed throughout to designate corresponding parts.

In the drawings there is shown a fragment of a refrigerator cabinet i and a cabinet structure 2 including a vertical wall 3 and a horizontal table part 4. Secured at one end of the table part 4 is a device having a base 5, a vertical standard 6, an electric motor I, and a shaft 9 driven by the motor through suitable torque transmitting elements contained in the housing 8. constitutes a means for driving interchangeable household implements for mixing, stirring and such purposes and its particular construction forms no part of the present invention. Inasmuch as the construction of such devices is Well known in the art it has not been deemed necessary to illustrate the same in detail here. The motor, as is customary on devices of this charactor, has a wire lead lil adapted to be plugged into an electrical supply socket and a switch H on the motor housing for controlling the operation of the motor. In the present case a bevelled gear I2 is removably secured thereon by the set screw I 3.

The ironer comprises a supporting element in the form of a plate it having integral parts l5 and it extending perpendicularly from the front and rear edges thereof respectively. The part [5 has a bent portion ll which serves as a work support and the part it is hingedly connected at it to the vertical wall 3. Hingedly connected to one of the side edges of the plate M is a flap l9.

Attached to the part it is a bracket 26 having forked ends 2! provided with bearings 22 receiving a shaft 23 supporting an ironing roller 24. One end of the shaft 23 is provided with an angular socket 25 receiving the angular stem 26 on a shaft 27 having a bevelled gear 28 on the end thereof. The stem 26 is secured in the socket 25 by a set screw 29 and the bevelled gear 28 meshes with the gear I2 when the parts are positioned as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. An ironing shoe 3E3, having heating elements generally designated 35, is provided with cars 32 receiving the ends of links 33, the other ends of the links being pivotally attachced to brackets 34 on the plate I. Supported by the cars 32 is a rod 35 and a link 3% has one end connected to the rod 35 and its other end connected to a lever 31 supported by a bracket 3'la attached to the part H5. The free end of the lever 36 has a handle 38 connected thereto, the handle extending through an open ing 39 in the part l5 and having ratchet teeth 40 co-operating with a retaining element 4| on the part It.

When the ironer is not in use the supporting structure comprised of the plate l4 and the parts l5 and i6 is moved on its pivot l8 to the position shown in Fig. 1 wherein the ironer mechanism is entirely concealed and. the table surface 4 may be used for various other purposes. When the device is lowered to the position shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 the gear 28 meshes with the gear I2 and the ironing roller 24 will be rotated when the motor l is operating.

As shown in Fig. 4 the invention also contemplates a shield for covering the gears I2 and 28. This shield comprises a plate 42 hingedly connected at 43 to the bracket arm 2| and having an aperture through which the end of the shaft 23 extends. I-Iingedly connected to the end of the plate 42 is another plate 44 which extends across in front of the gears I2 and 28.

The invention also contemplates a separate control for the power device when it is used to operate the ironer, the control means being shown in Figs. 7 and 8 to which reference is now had. A switch box 45 is secured to the cabinet 2 and instead of plugging the lead in wires in into the wall socket, as is ordinarily done, the lead in wires are plugged into the switch box 45. The switch box 45 is connected by lead wires 46 to a wall socket 41 and a conventional push button type switch 48 is provided in the box 45 to control the fiow of current from the wires 46 to the wires Ill. The switch 48 has a lever 49 extending outwardly from the box where it may be easily moved by engagement of the knee of a person sitting in front of the ironer. When the power device is used for its ordinary purposes the lead in wires Ill will be directly connected to a wallsocket such as the socket 41' for instance.

From the foregoing it becomes apparent that the invention provides in combination with a cabinet an ironer which may be moved to a position permitting the table surface to serve its ordinary purposes and whereby when it is moved into its operative position it automatically establishes a driving connection with the power source. This function is deemed particularly advantageous because the particular field of use of the present device is mostly confined to those unskilled mechanically and in order to make possible the use of the conventional device shown as a means for driving the ironer a construction requiring no complicated adjustments is important so that the driving device may be used for its ordinary purposes when the ironer is not in use.

Although a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described it will be understood that various changes may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention, and such changes are contemplated.

What I claim is:-

1. The combination with means for driving interchangeable household devices and a supporting structure therefor including a work surface, of an ironing device, means for mounting said ironing device on said supporting structure whereby it is movable to an operative position where it rests upon and is supported by said work surface and to a position Where it leaves said work surface unobstructed, and means for operatively connecting said first named means with said ironing device when the latter is resting on said supporting surface.

2. The combination with means for driving interchangeable household devices and a supporting structure therefor including a work surface, of an ironing device, means for mounting said ironing device on said supporting structure whereby it is movable to an operative position where it rests upon and is supported by said work surface and to a position where it leaves said Work surface unobstructed, and means for automatically establishing a driving connection between said first named means and said ironing device when the latter is moved to its operative position.

In combination, a cabinet, means supported by said cabinet for driving interchangeable household devices, ;an ironing device, means for movably supporting said ironing device relative to said cabinet and said first named means where- :by said ironing device may be moved to a position leaving said first named means unobstructed, means providing a driving connection between said ironing device and said first named means, and a hingedly mounted shield covering said-driving connection said shield being composed of a plurality of hingedly connected parts adapted to be relatively nested when not in use.

l. The combination with a cabinet having a horizontal portion and a vertical portion, of means for driving interchangeable household devices, said means being attached to said horizontal portion, an ironing device, a housing for said ironing device, means pivotally attaching said housing to said vertical portion whereby it may be swung to a position where it rests on said horizontal portion and to a position where it rests against said vertical portion to leave said horizontal portion and said first named means unobstructed, and means for operatively connecting said ironing device with said first named means when said housing is resting on said horizontal portion.
