4' Claims.
This invention relates to albums and the object of the invention is to provide an album particularly adapted for the mounting and display,- ing of stamps, coins or the like.
More particularly an object of the present invention is to provide in an album an improved loose leaf binder clamp and assembly.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the album in closed position illustrating certain features hereinafter more fully referred to.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 4.
Figure' 4 is a detail plan view of the binder clamp with the back of the album in open position, and with the protector plate removed.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a portion of one of the backs showing the latch means for the album.
Figure 6 is a detail view taken substantially on the line 66 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary plan view of the album with one of the backs folded to open position.
Figure 8 is a detail sectional view taken substantially on the line 8-8 of Figure 1.
Figure 9 is a plan view of a key.
Figure 10 is a plan view of a portion of one of the sheets of the album.
Figure 11 is a perspective view of a cover plate for the binder clamps.
Figure 12 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of the binder clamp assembly with the sliding. manipulating handle of the assembly in outward or extended position.
Figure 13 is a side elevational view showing the binder set up for perusal or any analogous purpose.
Figure 14 is a detailed sectional view showing the manner of detachably fastening the adjacents of two edge strips together.
Referring to the drawings by reference numerals it will be seen that the album comprises a pair of cover members 5, 6 which at one edge are hinged to a back I as indicated generally at 8.
The cover members 5 and 6 may be formed from any suitable material, such as ply wood, cardboard or the like and are preferably provided with a covering 9 of suitable fabric as suggested in Figurev 1.
5 The back I is in the formof an elongated channel member which houses the binder clamp hereinafter more fully described.
Hinged to the respective opposite ends of the back I are what may be termed edge strips 9 and I0 respectively. The strips 9 and I8 at one end are hinged to the ends of the back I as indicated generally at H.
The member 8 is in the form of a single strip that is of a length substantially slightly less than the width of the album while the strip l8 consists of a pair of sections hingedly connected together as at l2.
The cover member 5 has hinged to its free longitudinal edge as at l3 an edge strip M to the inner side of which are suitably secured relatively spaced plates l5 formed with eyes I 6 which, when the album is in the closed position project through openings I! provided in a plate l8 secured to the cover member 6 at the inner side of the latter as shown in Figures 6 and 8.
The portion of the plate I8 provided with the openings I1 is disposed opposite an elongated slot I9 provided in the aforementioned cover member 6, and working within the slot I9 is a latch rod 28, operating in suitable guides 2| provided therefor and suitably provided at its opposite ends to engage in the eyes "5 in a manner clearly shown in Figure 5 for releasably securing the album in closed position.
For shifting the rod 20 into and out of latching engagement with the eyes 5 there is provided a key operated arm 23 pivoted intermediate its ends as at 24 within a lateral slot 25 provided in the cover member 6 and pivoted at one end to an intermediate portion of the rod 28 as at 26. The member 23 is suitably formed at the pivot 24 thereof and at the end 21 thereof to accommodate a suitably provided key 28 (see Figure 9) which is used for rocking the arm 23 to latch or unlatch the album.
' Secured to the outer face of the cover member 6 and disposed over the aforementioned slot I9 is a suitable cover plate 30. As shown in Figure 1, plate 38 is provided with a suitable keyhole 3| to accommodate the key 28. In this connection it will also be noted that the plate 30 will be concealed by the fabric covering 9 which of course will be suitably provided with an opening registering with the keyhole 3|.
To provide for a firm rigid structure when the album is in completely closed position there are provided at the top and bottom edges of the cover members 5 and 6 and at the respective opposite end edges of the edge member [4 lugs 32 preferably formed of metal and secured to the aforementioned parts in a manner clearly shown in Figure 2. Complemental to the lugs 32 are spring clips 33 provided on the longitudinal edges of the edge strips 9 and ill and in the free end edges of said strips 9 and Hi and with which the lugs 32 engage in a manner clearly shown in Figure 2 when the parts are in fully closed position.
In accordance with the present invention the binder clamp comprises, as best shown in Figures 3, 4, and 8 a pair of oppositely disposed guides 34 disposed transversely within the back I and respectively having their respective opposite ends accommodated within side channels 35 pro.-
vided in the sides of the back i, and in this connection it will be also noted the guides are accom; modated in suitable channels 35 provided in the end Wall of the back I.
cured in the back in any suitable manner are provided with upper and lower channels 31, 38.
Slidably fitting within the channels 3?, 38 of each guide are racks 39 which have projecting outwardly and upwardly from one sidethereof arms 45 provided at their upper ends with substantially tubular prongs ii. The prongs fil are longitudinally slit and are adapted to telescope as shown in Figure 3 for holding the leaves 42 of the album by passing through the openings provided adjacent the marginal edge of the leaves. V
For operating the racks 39 there is provided a shaft 52 that extends through suitable openings provided therefor in the guides 34 and the shaft 42 is provided in any suitable manner with pinions 43 that mesh with the racksin the manner clearlyshown in Figure 3. Obviouslyas shaft '42 is rotated the racks willfbe' moved transversely either inwardly or outwardly carrying with them the prongs M to which the rackslare connected through the medium of the arms All in a manner above described. Manifestly the racks'in each guide are moved relative to: one another "either for telescoping the prongs M to secure the leaves 42" to the binder clamps or to move the prongs outward relative to one another to separate the prongs to permit of a removal or a'replacement of aleaf42. a I V To facilitate rotation oilthe, rod and shift the prongs as and for the purposes above mentioned thereis slidably associated with one end of the shaft42; a handle 53 having'a'squarediinterior which receives a squared end of theshaft 42'. Normally the handle 53 is in the retracted posi tion shown in Figure 4 so as not to interfere with a closing of the binder. However when it is. desired to manipulatethe shaft 42 to actuate the prongsof the binder clamp handle 53 is slid out wardly to the position shown in Figure 12 and when in this outward positionthe shaft may be rotated readily for actuating the prongs.I-
Shaft 42 is journalled in suitable bearings 44 provided therefor within the back "i. i r Removably fitted withintheback 1 is a cover or protector plate 45 which fits between the sides of the'back and is provided with notches Mi in the longitudinal edges thereof to'accommodate the arms 4%), and not to interfere with the free movement of the prongs to opened or closed posi tion. f
As shown in, Figure 11 cover plate 45 has downturned end edges ll, andone of these end edges is provided witha notch 48 as shown and through which the handle member 53'operates. I Thus it will not be necessary to disturb the p1ate'45 to obtain access to the handle 'member 53. j. a
To protect the apertured edges of the leaves 42 there are provided as shown in Figure 8 plates is of suitable material and these plates are suitably apertured to receive the prongs 4|.
In the present instance the leaves s2 are provided with suitable pockets 59 into which may be placed stamps, coins, or the like which are collected.
When it is desired to make use of the album, in looking through the album or for other purposes the same when in open position may be set up as in Figure 13 wherein it will be seen that the end strips 9 and It] may be swung to the "position shown in Figure 13 with one section of "the end strip IB forming a post, and the other sectionof the end strip l0 lapped by the free end --of the strip-9* and cooperating with the strip 9 Each of these guides 34, which guides are see to-providea base upon which the album at the back] thereof is supported on a table or the like a manner convenient for turning the pages of the albumin looking through the same. I 7
