EXTRUDING MACHI NE Filed June` 25, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet l [./Vl/ENTOR A TTORNE V5 April 20, 1937. v` E. RoYLE EXTRUDIKNG MACHINE 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Filed June 25, 1955 INYENTOR Patented Apr. 20, 1937v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 'l' Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in extruding machines and has for an object to provideV a strainer head which is adapted for thorough and expeditious operation upon mal terials oi' varying characteristics. and which includes an improved means for adjusting, cleaning and replacing the parts and assembling them in operative position, as well as for disassembling the same.
lo Another object consists in providing a strainer head divided transversely into two members hinged together and having mechanically operated means for quickly locking'and unlocking the members in thehead.
15 Another object consists in providing a strain er head having means mounted on the movable member for cutting the material transversely, when so desired. after it has passed through the head, which cutting means is iixedly mounted at its outer extremity to extend diametrically across the line of extrusion and` actuated by a motor. i
another obiect'consists in certain improve-- ments in the i'orm, construction and arrange- .w merit oi the several parts whereby the above named and other objects may effectively be attained. i i
Machines of this character are designed to operate during' the process of reclaiming the rub- 30 ber, upon rubber compounds that include various substances, and these substances vary greatly in consistency and individual characteristics.
Consquently, it is necessary to provide a strainery head which is not only strong and eilective. but 35 ,which may be rapidly assembled and disassembled. and rendered proof against serious injury arising trom an unusual strain duetto the presv ence oi some foreign matter undergoing the operation. i
40 A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Fig. i represents a front elevatlonoi a head Fig. represents a vertical `section taken inA the plane oi the line V--V ci Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows;
55 Fig. 6 represents a detail horizontal section,
taken in the plane of the line VI--VI of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows; and
t Fig. 7 represents a detail horizontal section taken in the plane of the line VII-VII oi Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
'Ihe cylinder of the extruding machine, ot which the iront portion only is shown, is denoted by i and its bore liner by I. The usual stock screw or plodder 3 is housed within the liner 2 of the cylinder and projects therefrom 10 for cooperation with the fixed member l of the strainer head. 'This fixed member l is secured in position on the cylinder I by means ot a series of stud bolts 5 whichextend outwardly from the cylinder and register with holes in 15 the face plate 6 of the member 4. Nuts l are provided for threading on the bolts 5 in order to secure the face plate 6 and hence` the member 4 in position on the cylinder. `The member 4 includes a liner 8 which is shouldered at 8 to register with o. reduced iiange Il that projects forwardly from the bore liner 2, asshown in Fig. 5. A suitable washer il is disposed be`A tween the cylinder l and the bore liner 2 on one hand and the faceplate of the member 4 on 25 the other hand.
Suitable passages I2 are disposed in the mem` ber 4 for the circulation ci a temperature con# trolling medium in a manner well understood` in the art. The interior of the member l immediately in advance ofthe liner 8 expands or ilares. abruptly to a shoulder ll, in which flared chamber the free end `of the stockscrew ac` tuates.
`The movable member ci the head is denoted by I4 and hasits inner circumference l5, fora short distance, substantially equal to the inner diameter of the shoulder It of the ilxedmemn ber l, than it is ilared forwardly and outwardly at i., though its-dare is not as abrupt as that oi the interior oi the fixed member I between the end oi' the liner and the shoulder Il. The movable member M has also formed on its inner circumterence i5, It vertical partitions Il, Il and connecting horizontal .partitions I0, 20, which serve to divide the material passing therethrough into tour sections. Each partition is tapered inv wardly at 2l, thence outwardly atA 22 to allow the plastic material to be freely extruded.
'Ihe inner'suriace of the movable member Il 5o is recessed at 23 for the reception o! a relatively thin foraminous plate 24, `the perforations in which are denoted by 25. This plate 24 is secured imposition in the` recess 23 by screws 28 and arrangedto abut the vertical and horizontal partitions which prevent the plate from buckling or becoming distorted by the action of the material being forced away from the stock screw.
A screen or strainer 21 is interposed between the shoulder I3 and the plate 24 when the members 4 and I4 are assembled.
The member I4 ls adapted to be swung into and out of engagement with the member 4 by means of a. hinge formed by trunnions 28, 29 on the arm 30 which extends outwardly and forwardly on the side of the fixed member 4, and similar trunnions 3|, 32 are formed integral with the arms 33, 34, respectively, on the movable member I4. Trunnions 28, 23, 3|, 32 are arranged in vertical alinement so as to receive' a hinge pin journaled therein.
The movable member I4 is removably secured to the fixed member 4 by means of an annular ring 36 formed of a pair of segments 31, 33 secured together by bolts 39, 40. This annular ring36 has an interior annulariiange 4I on its rear transverse face, which is arranged to oscillate in a peripheral groove 42 in the outer end of the member 4, as shown in Fig. 5. The outer transverse face of the ring '36 is provided with a series of interior radial projections 43 which are designedto mate with a series oi exterior radial projections 44 formed adjacent the inner transverse face of the movable member I 4. These projections 43, 44 have their sides cut on radial lines and theprojections 44 are of such size and form that they can pass between the projections 43 on the ring 36, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
This -construction enables the movable member I4 to be swung toward and away from the fixed member 4, during which movement the projections 44 will pass between the' projections 43 on the ring 33.
In order to conveniently actuate the ring 36 so that the projections 43 may be brought into and out of overlapped relation with the projections 44 on the member I4, I provide a hand operated mechanism comprising a bracket 4b secured to the fixed member 4 at 43 (see Fig. 5), a drive shaft 41 journaled in the bracket. a worm 43 fast on the drive shaft, and a worm wheel 43 coacting with saidworm and secured on a shaft 40 also journaleddn the bracket vat right angles to the drive shaft 41, on which shaft 53 is xed a pinion 5I arranged to mesh with a rack 52 fast on the segment '38 of the ring 36.
To rotate the shaft 41 toactuate the parts, a hand wheel 53 is fixed on the shaft 41 and provided with a handle 54. If desired, the hand wheel 53 may be rotated by means of a bar (not shown) which may be inserted insockets 55 arranged in the periphery of the hand wheel 33. Thus, it will be seen that if the hand wheel 53 is moved in the direction of the arrow shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3 to rotate the shaft 41, the worm 43 which is mounted on the shaft will actuate the worm wheel 49'which, in turn, will move its shaft 50 upon which the pinion 5I is xed, and, as the pinion is in engagement with the rack 52 fast on the segment 33 of the ring 38, it will bel moved to the position shown in Fig. 4. In this position the projections 43 are located between the projections 44 and the member i4 free to be swung outwardly away from the member 4 to the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2.
Inorder that the screen 21 and foraminous plate 24 carried by the movable member I 4 will be brought into intimate contact with the shoulder I3 of theiixed member. each of the surfaces of the pmjections43,44, which'contact by the rotation of the ring 36, is provided with a slight inclination, so that, as the projections 43 are slid onto the projections 44, a wedge-like action takes place and the member I4 will be `moved longitudinally toward the fixed member 4. To com- 5 transversely at predetermined intervals comprises a bar E0 extending diametrically across the end `of the member i4 and provided at its outer exl` tremities with plates 82, 63 secured to a ring gear 64 fitted to rotate in an annular recess 65 in the -outer end of the movable member I4. This ring gear 64 is maintained in position by a retainer ring E6 secured to the member I4 by screws 31. 2
The bar t@ is also provided with a centrally disposed hub t@ which is fulcrumed on a pin I3 having its inner end screwed into the junction of the :vertical and horizontal partitions I1, Il,
B3, and` 28, respectively, while the outer end is 2 arranged te receive a'collar 10 pinned thereto at 1I. This bar 60 is-further provided with blades 12, 13 having their cutting edges'disposed in opposite directions, so that, when the ring gear 34 is rotated in its recess 65, the blades 12, 3i
13 will move in opposite arcuate directions around the pin S3.
The ring gear 64 is controlled and actuated by a chain 'I4 which receives its motion from a pinion l5 fast on the shaft 13 of an electric motor 11 35 mounted on a bracket 13. IThis bracket 13 is arranged to receive the upper end of the hinge pin 35 and is secured to the trunnion 3l of the arm on the movable member I4 by dowels 13 (see Fig. 3). v bracket 13 with its motor and adjacent mechawill be maintained in operative position whether the members of the head are in open orclosed position and will be moved on the hinge pin with the movable member I4.
In operation: The material to be strained, such, for instance, as masticated old rubber products andthe like, is urged forwardly by the stock screw '3 into the ared chamber in the fixed member 4 oi' the head, then through the screen 2l and holes 2b in the plate 24, and then through the ared outlets in the movable member I4 where it is divided longitudinally into four sections by the vertical and horizontal partitions.
The age of the material from the stock screw 5l into the adjacent chamber is more rapid than its movement from the plate 24 into the divided outlet because of the obstruction provided by the plate. The provision of the abruptly flared chamber at the end of the screw and the less el abruptly flared outlet conform the device to this condition. Additionally, the fact that the screen is of much greater cross sectional area than the screw receiving portion tends to increase the output of the device by permitting the screw 6:
to work out or near its capacity instead of hampering it by back pressure on the material. After 'a certain amoimt of material has been strained, it may be found desirous to clean or remove the screen or plate, and, in order to 71 plate i3 il Thus, it will be seen that the 40 wheel 4l fast on the shaft I0 carrying the pinion each other, the movable member il is, tree to be swung on its hinge pin l5 to the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 2. In swinging the movable member `I4 away from the xed member l, the full surfaces of the screen 21 and plate 24 are exposed, so that any cleaning or removal which may be required is readily and easily accomplished. After the screen and plate have been cleaned or renewed and returned totheir former positions, the movable member is again swung on its hinge pin into engagement with the ilxed member 4 and the hand wheel 53 manipulated so that the ,shaft 41, together with the worm I8, worm wheel 48 and shaft 50, will actuate the pinion 5i and cause it, by engagement with the segment 52, to rotate the ring 36, which, in turn. brings the plates 5B on the projections I3 slidably into contact with the plates II on the projections 44 of the movable member I I. With the inclined surfaces of the plates on the projections fully in contact, the movable member Il will be locked to the fixed member l and the parts again placed in condition for iurther operation.
When desired, the material extruded from the outlets in the movable member may be cut transversely into predetermined lengths by the blades 12, 13 on the rotatable bar 80. To actuate the bar, the motor 11 is energized and the pinion 15 rotated to drive the ring gear through the chain 1I, to which ring gear the plates 62, 63 at the outer ends of the bar 8l are secured.
Thus, it will be seen that the operative force or movement of the ring gear M acts upon the ends oi' the bar 6I, moving the blades 12, "I3 in opposite arcuate directions and about the pin 69 located at the junction of the vertical and horizontal partitions, thereby Veffecting a smoothness and celerity in the performance of the cutting operation.
'Ihe construction above described enables the members forming the strainerhead to be transversely separated and replaced in an expeditious manner, while the readjustment of the parts in 'the exactly desired positions is readily assured.
It will vhe understood that various changes may be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts without depart-` ing from the spirit and scope oi my invention,
and hence I do not intend to be limited to the details herein shown and described except as they may be included in the claims.
